Conway, SC. -the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers finally returned to Conway to open a season-ending homestand. The customary walk through “Teal Town” was electric — maybe the loudest in program history — as what felt like half the state of South Carolina packed in to show support for Kade Vaughn.

Fans came armed with teal aviators, poker chips, and signs ranging from simple to outrageous, including the crowd favorite: “Coach Vaughn can gamble with my money!” It was clear the Coastal faithful had adopted the same rallying cry as Heisman contender Bryce Underwood: ten toes down, two fingers up with Coach Vaughn.

Mother Nature tried to slow things down early, as another torrential downpour in Conway gummed up the Chanticleers’ offensive rhythm. But Coastal’s defense wasted no time making its presence felt, opening the scoring with a safety after a 4th-down stop pinned Troy inside its own two-yard line.

That was just the start of a miserable afternoon for the Trojans’ quarterbacks. Starter Garrison Beasley lasted just three sacks before leaving with a forearm injury. Backup De’Andre Hoag was thrown into the storm and hit the turf four more times before halftime. By the break, Coastal had built a commanding 37-0 lead while holding Troy to fewer than 10 total yards after factoring in the seven sacks.

The second half brought no mercy. Third-string QB Keelan Jackson entered the fray, only to be sacked three more times as Coastal’s offense kept piling it on. When the dust settled, the Chanticleers had racked up 10 total sacks on three different quarterbacks — a defensive clinic.

“We thought this would be a Sun Belt Championship showcase,” admitted the Chanticleers’ radio analyst after Michael Allen’s second rushing TD made it 72-0 in the fourth quarter. “But if this is the best the Sun Belt has to offer, maybe the NCAA should be investigating if Coastal belongs in a higher-tier conference.”

Underwood had a rare off day statistically, completing just 20 of 38 passes in the wet conditions, with eight drops by his receivers. Still, he managed 250+ passing yards, 80+ rushing yards, and six total touchdowns — another strong addition to his Heisman résumé.

Coastal will stay home next week to host Marshall (4-6) on The Teal, as the postseason push continues.

Freshman Walt Reyna continues to make plays with a safety and a later fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown.

Gotta salute the faithful who came out despite the less than stellar conditions.

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have reached 11 wins for the second straight season, but questions are starting to swirl about the offense’s recent boom-or-bust tendencies.

At the center of it is Bryce Underwood, who’s been uncharacteristically sloppy over the past two weeks. The Heisman frontrunner has committed six turnovers in his last two outings, including four against Marshall alone.

“Just pressing too much,” Underwood admitted postgame. “We’ll look at the tape and figure it out.”

Despite the miscues, Coastal still turned a tense 35-20 contest midway through the third quarter into a 49-20 runaway. Underwood threw two more touchdowns in the span of minutes, including a 73-yard dagger to Dazmin James that crushed any hope of a Thundering Herd rally. The score was a milestone, too — it vaulted James into first place in program history for both single-season receiving yards and touchdowns.

While the offense sputtered at times, the nation’s top-ranked defense looked as dominant as ever. Coastal racked up 10 sacks, returned an interception for a touchdown, and scooped-and-scored on a fumble to keep Marshall’s offense flailing all night.

“There’s a lot going on with this program right now,” Pat McAfee said on College GameDay. “You’ve got Heisman hype for Bryce Underwood, a playoff berth in play, and all the drama around Vaughn and the program.” Nick Saban added, “That drama could impact eligibility if any wrongdoing is found, and that’s something you can’t ignore. I think its fair to say the weight of the season may be nagging at some players as seasons end nears."

For now, though, the Chanticleers are 11-0 and one win away from a second straight perfect regular season. Only Senior Night against Georgia State stands in their way.

Image
Josiah Persinger's two defensive touchdowns, including this pick six, kept the Marshall Thundering Herd grasping at straws.

Image
Sedrick Sparks threw a dart on the run for an 88 yard touchdown moments after a 2nd defensive touchdown by the Chants, but it would be the last touchdown on the evneing for Marshall as their comeback bid fell flat.

It may not be overly realistic but you gotta move to a tougher conference or go independent.

/br]Conway, SC. - After two weeks of uneven offensive play, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers looked every bit like the powerhouse that’s carried them to back-to-back undefeated regular seasons, dismantling Georgia State 72-0 to close out the year at 12-0.

“It was an important win for us — and not just for the seniors,” said head coach Kade Vaughn, addressing the media for the first time since the NCAA’s investigation into the program began over a month ago. “We needed to get our heads right going into a pivotal Sun Belt Championship Game. The guys who were here last year remember all too well how that ended.”

Last year’s 12-0 run ended with a stunning upset loss to Southern Miss, costing the Chants their first College Football Playoff berth. Vaughn made it clear the team has no interest in a repeat.

“We don’t intend to let that happen again,” declared Heisman favorite Bryce Underwood, who delivered a statement performance after his own recent dip in form — completing 23 of 29 passes for 272 yards and six touchdowns, while adding 51 rushing yards and another score.

Although Vaughn returned to the podium, program officials announced beforehand that no questions about the ongoing NCAA probe would be taken. Instead, the afternoon became a celebration of Coastal’s senior class. A pregame video tribute honored WR Aziah Johnson, DE LJ McCray, LB Tayveon Bennett, HB Bill Davis, and FS Ja’Marley Riddle — players Vaughn credited with sparking the program’s rapid rise.

“Without guys like that buying in early, we aren’t here today,” Vaughn said with a smirk, the word buying landing with deliberate weight.

The rout produced multiple program records. Dazmin James set new single-season marks for receptions (74) and touchdowns (18), completing the triple crown of Coastal receiving records, while Underwood’s 54 touchdown passes set a new Sun Belt single-season standard. With postseason stats now counting toward season totals, the duo could push those records to even greater heights.

Coastal Carolina now turns its focus to erasing last year’s title-game disappointment, with No. 20 Arkansas State (7-5) standing between the Chanticleers and their first-ever College Football Playoff berth.

Robby Washington's 95 yard touchdown return ensured the Chants 2nd half was just as explosive as the 1st.
