Conway, SC.- In the wildest game of this year’s College Football Playoff first round, Coastal Carolina barely escaped with its season intact, surviving a furious Washington comeback to edge the Huskies 55-52 in Conway. Twice the visitors erased two-score deficits, the second time tying the game on a late pick-six. But instead of overtime, Mason Kelsay shook off the blunder, drove his team into range, and watched Jesus Mendez split the uprights from 44 yards as time expired to send the defending champs to the Orange Bowl.

“You definitely don’t like blowing two-score leads, especially twice in the same half,” admitted Kade Vaughn afterward. “But the boys showed fight, and that’s all you can ask for this late in the season. Hats off to Mason. A lot of lesser QBs would’ve folded after that pick-six. He brushed himself off and went right back to work. We don’t win this game without his composure.”

For most of the night, Kelsay had looked like a man on a mission. He piled up more than 400 passing yards and six touchdowns, setting a new Coastal Carolina single game passing record en route to carving up Washington’s secondary. When the Huskies attempted an onside kick late in the fourth, trailing 52-45, and Coastal recovered, the game felt sealed. But after two stuffs by the Huskies’ front, Vaughn put the ball back in his quarterback’s hands on third down. The pass to Carl Kopp was off target, sailing behind him, and Huskies LB Jonathan Epperson Jr. snatched it and sprinted 89 yards the other way. In an instant, the Brooks Stadium crowd went silent: 52-52.

Kelsay answered with ice in his veins. He hit Trishtin Glass for 33 yards, then Terrence Rugamba for 20, marching Coastal just inside long field goal range. Facing a 50-yarder with seven seconds left, Vaughn gambled on one more play. Kelsay zipped a quick in-route to Kopp for seven precious yards, called timeout, and set up Mendez. The senior kicker drilled it — no doubt, no drama.

“Senior quarterback, seasoned kicker. That’s what you dream of in those moments,” Vaughn said. “Mason knew the drill: quick yards, timeout, give Jesus the cushion he needed.”

In a game that featured 14 touchdowns and more than 1,200 yards of offense, it was a simple, steady kick that made the difference. Coastal advances, but the takeaway was clear: if the Chanticleers want to topple undefeated Georgia in the Orange Bowl, the defense and late-game execution have to tighten up in a hurry.

Epperson came up clutch on the errant throw by Kelsay, hauling it in and turning into a running back with the 89 yard return.

Kelsay carved up the Huskies defense all night, but a late miscue nearly sent Coastal home.

Big plays continued to plague the Chanticleers defense who blew a pair of double digit leads in the 2nd half.

Jeremiah Johnson Officially Out At Coastal

Image

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers’ defense has been on a roller coaster ride all season, and when Washington lit them up again in the first round of the College Football Playoff, fans inside Brooks Stadium weren’t exactly shocked.

What did shock them, however, was the absence of long-time DC Jeremiah Johnson on the sideline. That mystery didn’t last long.

“Jeremiah was fired prior to the first round of the playoff, but out of respect for his contributions to the program it wasn’t announced at the time,” revealed head coach Kade Vaughn. “JJ had a number of interviews lined up and didn’t want negative press hanging over him. While he was interviewing for his next move, we were also conducting our own interviews behind the scenes.”

The program admitted they’d been transparent with candidates, explaining that Johnson and the school had already agreed he would not return for a sixth season. That openness paved the way for a surprising hire: veteran defensive coordinator Tony White.

“That’s why I came here,” White said. “Coastal is heading into the ACC next season, the exposure is only going to grow, and I felt like it was the right move to strengthen my résumé and show I can coach at the highest level.”

White spent the last four years as Memphis’ head coach, going 34-19, but despite solid success he never landed the Power Five opportunity he coveted. After interviewing with West Virginia and ultimately being passed over, he decided it was time to find a bigger challenge. Enter Coastal.

While new hire Tony White will contribute to the game plan and practices leading up to the Orange Bowl, defensive line coach Jacori Greer will handle play-calling duties on game day, according to Vaughn.

“White’s knowledge and experience are going to be huge for us in prep, but asking him to run the sideline less than a week into his tenure would be unfair,” Vaughn explained. “Next year will be his time to put his stamp on this defense. For now, we just need his help getting us through the finish line.”

Meanwhile, former coordinator Jeremiah Johnson quickly found his next opportunity, officially announced as the new defensive coordinator at Kansas State under recently hired head coach Eliah Drinkwitz.

Miami, FL. - It would be easy to pin Coastal Carolina’s Orange Bowl collapse on quarterback Mason Kelsay, who left midway through the first quarter with broken ribs. But even before the injury, Kelsay had coughed up two turnovers in his first three drives, setting a troubling tone.

The real unraveling came in the second quarter. Georgia flipped a 14–10 deficit into a commanding 45–21 halftime lead, fueled by three interceptions from Carter Smith in relief of Kelsay — one of them a pick-six — that opened the floodgates for the Bulldogs’ offense.

“In a snapshot, the defense played well,” rationalized head coach Kade Vaughn afterward. “Big plays hurt us in spots, but when you’re constantly getting rushed back onto the field after turnovers, it’s hard to keep from wearing down.”

Eight turnovers in total doomed the Chanticleers, and unlike last year’s national title game, there was no “Big Game Bryce” Underwood to pull off the rescue act. Smith led a pair of scoring drives before completely unraveling, and when Neal Kennedy entered after halftime, the bleeding didn’t stop. Kennedy tossed three more interceptions as Georgia coasted, their offense throttled only by Coastal’s defense stiffening late once the game was well out of reach.

“Losing Kelsay hurt them for sure, but you can’t put this entirely on that,” Kirk Herbstreit warned during the broadcast. “This is also on Kade Vaughn and Dave Patenaude. At some point, you have to adjust — and they didn’t.”

Despite the quarterback carousel, the Chanticleers still managed 561 yards of total offense. But turnovers crippled their chances, leaving only a meaningless late touchdown in the 3rd quarter as consolation.

Georgia now advances to a semifinal showdown with hated rival Clemson, who dispatched Big Ten champion Michigan 38–24 in the Peach Bowl, with a spot in the National Championship hanging in the balance.

Connor Wiggins single handedly took control of the game in the 2nd Q with three straight drive killing interceptions including this pick-six.

Mason Kelsay sandwiched a scoring drive in between a pair of fumbles, including this one that left the senior signal caller on the sideline with broken ribs, ending his campaign.
