Nick Rudd-Johnson got some air in that screen
he got dem ups. The angle of the picture makes it seems like more, but really just a routine jump ball.

Alex Dragos' Shreds Chanticleers, Game Tying Drive Comes Up Just Short

Kelsay drove the Chanticleers the length of the field for a potential game tying touchdown, but on 3rd and goal Kelsay was flushed from the pocket and came up just yards shy of the end zone.

Conway, SC. -For the first time since the 2026 Sun Belt Championship Game, Brooks Stadium fell silent. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers’ home dominance ended in stunning fashion as the 10th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish ripped apart the defending champions’ defense for 436 yards and five touchdowns, walking out of Conway with a 49-42 win. The loss marked Coastal’s second of the season and their first on The Teal in nearly three years.

“It’s been a problem since Florida State, and we’re finally starting to feel it,” admitted head coach Kade Vaughn after the game, his tone sharper than usual. “Jeremiah [Johnson] and I have had a lot of conversations these last few weeks about the scheme in the secondary in particular, but more changes are going to be made—I promise you that. We can’t keep letting teams gash us for 50-yard plays and expect to win.”

Explosives defined the night. Coastal’s offense remained limited outside of sporadic bursts from Sidney Barkow or Mason Kelsay, while Notre Dame repeatedly struck gold. The Irish piled up seven plays of 45-plus yards, five of them going the distance for quick touchdowns. By contrast, the Chanticleers needed long, sustained drives to stay within reach.

Down 35-21 entering the fourth quarter, Coastal looked poised for one of their patented comebacks. Kelsay connected with Matthew Hape for the duo’s third touchdown of the night, then Hape turned hero on special teams by forcing a fumble that was scooped and returned for a score. Suddenly, Brooks Stadium was alive again as the game tied at 35.

But the celebration didn’t last. Just three plays later, Notre Dame’s Jermaine Warrior cut through a porous Chanticleers secondary for another back-breaking touchdown. Kelsay responded with a resilient drive, finishing with five total touchdowns on the night and 466 all-purpose yards, but the constant defensive lapses left Coastal chasing. In the final seconds, the Chants reached the red zone with a chance to tie, only for Kelsay to be flushed out of the pocket on 3rd and goal. His scramble came up three yards short, and just like that, the home streak was over.

“It’s going to be a long bye week—for everyone,” Vaughn said bluntly afterward. “Guys around here like to joke that ‘Winter is Coming,’ but changes are coming to this defense. That’s for damn sure.”

Too Little, Too Late? Kade Vaughn Announces Slew of Defensive Changes

Image

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers built their championship pedigree under Kade Vaughn on the back of a ferocious defense led by longtime coordinator Jeremiah Johnson. But in 2029, that same unit has fallen well short of its reputation.

Against the run, Coastal is still as tough as they come — ranking 11th nationally and averaging nearly four sacks per game with 26 total on the year. But the pass defense? That’s another story.

“Swiss cheese,” Vaughn barked during Monday’s film session, following a 49-42 loss to Notre Dame in which Alex Dragos torched the secondary for 435 yards and five touchdowns while throwing just three incompletions. Dragos joined a growing list of QBs to light up the Chants through the air, a list that already included Wake Forest’s Everett Donaghy (400 yards) and Florida State’s Frank Powell (538).

“I thought we’d had this problem solved and salted away,” Vaughn admitted. “But maybe we were just facing sorry QBs instead of my defense playing up to standard. And since you guys aren’t figuring it out, we’re making wholesale changes across the board.”

On Tuesday, those changes became real. Sophomore Eric Wheat replaced his cousin Brooks on the right edge, with Brooks relegated to a situational pass-rush role. Redshirt freshman Lionel Ruggins climbed into the DT rotation, earning praise from Vaughn for his pre-snap recognition. At linebacker, Jeremy Snyder entered the mix while veteran Enrique Ambrose slid back. And at corner, the most dramatic shift came when freshman Mike Momah — once a spring darling — was demoted to fourth on the depth chart. Xavier Montague moved into his vacated spot while also taking over slot duties, with Jojo Tate promoted to run opposite Jason Ramsay.

“Mike is talented and will have a role on this team in the future, heck even the present,” Vaughn said. “But right now he’s not trusting his eyes. He’s pressing to make plays, and when you press, usually it’s the wrong button.”

But not everyone seems aligned on the defensive overhaul. Johnson, a two-time Broyles Award winner, was absent from Monday’s film study and was seen exchanging heated words with Vaughn during Tuesday’s practice. Sources inside the program confirmed the tension.

“Jeremiah wasn’t there for reasons outside of our control — not my story to tell,” Vaughn said when pressed. “And as far as the sideline conversations? We’re both competitors. That shows itself in different ways. But we’re on the same mission: bringing a second championship to Conway.”

Johnson has long been viewed as a head-coach-in-waiting, turning down multiple opportunities in years past to remain with Vaughn. But after suitors backed off in 2028 and with the defense struggling this fall, his window may be closing. The question now: will he ride it out alongside Vaughn, or will he jump at the next opening if things continue to sour?

Coastal has a bye week to recalibrate before diving into a brutal three-game stretch: at Clemson, home against Indiana, and a road trip to Tuscaloosa. One way or another, the defense will be tested — and soon.

Our biggest issue is lack of explosiveness outside of Barkow/Kelsay and being able to get stops on defense. We can rush the passer and stop the run, but we give up WAY to many big plays in the secondary. Moved some guys around to increase play recognition on the defense hoping that'll help. But our corners are sorry and safeties aren't much better unfortunately. Gonna have to win a few shootouts me thinks :yep:
