Bryce Underwood Secures Landmark Heisman

Image

Bryce Underwood doesn’t lead the nation in passing yards, touchdowns, or rushing totals like he did during his landmark 2027 campaign. But when the ballots were tallied in New York, none of that mattered. The Coastal Carolina star was awarded the 2028 Nissan Heisman Memorial Trophy, edging Kent State running back Taevion Swint in one of the tighter races in recent memory.

The win places Underwood in historic company. He becomes just the second player ever to win the Heisman twice, joining Archie Griffin — who was on hand to greet him, posing alongside Underwood with the trophy in the iconic Heisman stance.

Asked why he believed voters rewarded him again, Underwood was blunt:

“I think the voters saw the quarterback of the No. 1 team in the nation and the leader of the No. 1 offense in the nation. Last year I piled up stats in a weak league. This year? I lined up against the best, every week, and won. The numbers don’t pop like 2027, but the results do. And results win.”

The decision didn’t sit well with everyone.

“Not even top five in any statistical category?! #ThisIsYourHeisman??” one fan posted on X.

Another went for the jugular: “Did Vaughn buy this the way he bought Underwood to Conway???”

But no matter the noise online, the fact stands: outside of Columbus, no other program has ever produced a two-time Heisman winner. For Coastal Carolina, a program that joined the FBS just over a decade ago, it’s another milestone in a meteoric rise.

Underwood didn’t walk away with just the Heisman. He also claimed the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Davey O’Brien, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Awards, sweeping nearly every major quarterback honor.

And he wasn’t the only Chanticleer to shine:

Walt Reyna, the sophomore linebacker and defensive heartbeat of Coastal, became just the third player in college football history to win both the Chuck Bednarik and Bronko Nagurski trophies in back-to-back years, while also collecting his second straight Butkus Award. Dareon Doctson finished runner-up for the Doak Walker Award, falling only to Heisman runner-up Swint and Trishtin Glass, Coastal’s do-it-all tight end, also came up just short in Mackey Award voting.

It was, by any measure, one of the most decorated nights in Chanticleer history.

The glitter of awards season now gives way to the pressure of the College Football Playoff. With Underwood’s place in history secure and hardware stacked high in Conway, the only question left is whether Coastal can mount one more trophy — the one that matters most — in Tampa.

The Road to Tampa Bay

Image
Perfect Season. Check.
Back-to-Back Heismans. Check.
Now It’s Time for Coastal Carolina to Chase the Only Trophy Left.

The College Football Playoff bracket is set, and for the first time in program history, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers enter the postseason as the No. 1 overall seed. After storming through a brutal independent schedule at 12-0, the Heisman-led Chants know their path to Tampa Bay — but it won’t be easy.

Coastal will headline the Orange Bowl, where they’ll await the winner of an SEC quarterfinal clash between No. 8 Auburn and No. 9 Ole Miss.

On ESPN’s selection show, Nick Saban laid out the challenge:

“Coastal’s proven they can beat SEC teams — Florida, South Carolina, Texas in the Playoff last year. But they did that with the underdog label. This year they’re the big dog. Everybody expects them to win. The question is, how do they handle being the hunted?”

Pat McAfee wasn’t buying the skepticism.

“Coach, no disrespect, but these boys already answered that all year. Look at the gauntlet they went through — their opponents combined for 100 wins and only 45 losses. That’s insane. And they didn’t just survive, they thrived. My bigger concern is this: it’s rematches everywhere. Miami wants that lick back. Michigan wants that lick back. Shoot, even Southern Miss might come calling for the whole Sun Belt if they sneak through. Coastal’s got targets on targets.”

Here is the full breakdown of the upcoming Playoff schedule:

#24 Southern Miss will travel to Miami to face the 5th ranked Hurricanes, who dominated the Golden Eagles 55-14 two years ago in the same position. The winner advances to the Sugar Bowl to face 4th ranked Michigan.

#9 Ole Miss will travel to Auburn to face the 8th ranked Tigers with the winner advancing to the Orange Bowl and #1 overall seed Coastal Carolina.

22nd ranked Kent State will travel west to Eugene to try and stun the 6th ranked Oregon Ducks. The winner moves to the Cotton Bowl to face 3rd ranked Clemson.

Lastly, 13th ranked SMU travels east to Louisville to face the 7th ranked Cardinals. The winner will head to the West Coast where #2 Penn State awaits in the Rose Bowl.

David Stone Prepared To Return In Orange Bowl

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers thought they were getting a defensive line anchor when they landed David Stone, the former Oklahoma five-star, in the 2027 transfer portal. Instead, fans barely got a glimpse of him. A fractured shoulder blade in the season opener sidelined the 6’5”, 305-pound wrecking ball before he could leave his mark.

Now, just in time for the College Football Playoff, Stone is back.

“All gas, no brakes baby! Been sitting all season and I’m READY,” the senior posted on X after receiving medical clearance for the upcoming Orange Bowl.

Stone’s late-season return comes with an intriguing twist. Having played in only one game before the injury, he remains eligible to redshirt. If Coastal reaches the National Championship, that appearance would mark just his fourth game — meaning Stone could potentially return in 2029 should he choose to use the extra year.

Pressed about the future, Stone was blunt: “Haven’t thought about it. Just focused on the playoffs.”

Head coach Kade Vaughn quickly echoed the sentiment, cutting off any speculation. “Same here. We haven’t had one conversation about next season. We’ve got one more prize to chase this year. Next year can wait.”

That prize begins with the No. 1 Chanticleers defending their seed against the ninth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels in the Orange Bowl — and with Stone back in the trenches, Vaughn’s “trophy hunters” just got a massive boost to their arsenal.

They may have made it since it takes 5 conference champions - and with me screwing up and the ACC and Big Ten not having CCG both the MAC and Sun Belt had their conference champions in....

Thanks man! I'm conflicted about Underwood - I don't think he deserved it. Wasn't top 10 in passing yards or touchdowns, or rushing yards or touchdowns. He did lead all QBs in rushing totals, but wasn't a combined touchdown leader either. But he was the #1 player on the #1 team in the country so :yeshrug:

Miami, FL. - For the second straight game, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers found themselves trailing early. A month ago, Duke jumped out to a 20-3 lead before Coastal roared back. In the Orange Bowl, it was Ole Miss delivering the first punch — a Paul Carreon catch-and-run followed by a Bryce Underwood fumble that set up a short field goal for a quick 10-0 Rebel advantage.

Then the Teal Wave hit.

Underwood answered with a one-yard dive over the pile to put Coastal on the board. On the next possession, defensive tackle David Stone — finally healthy after missing nearly the entire year — stripped Ole Miss back Tyeshawn King, and safety Gage Drummond scooped the ball for a touchdown. Moments later, the Rebels coughed up the kickoff after a hit stick by Jalen Likely, with freshman George Rabe racing it into the end zone.

In the span of six minutes, Ole Miss went from up 10-0 to down 21-10.

“That’s how quick elite teams can flip a script,” said Kirk Herbstreit on the ESPN broadcast.

Coastal piled on with another Underwood strike to Trishtin Glass, pushing the margin to 28-10 before Ole Miss found daylight again with a bruising 54-yard touchdown from King. From that point on, every Rebel rally was met with an even bigger Chanticleer response.

The Rebels crept within 15 on a 53-yard field goal with under a minute left in the half, but Underwood crushed their momentum with a ruthless two-minute drill. Using a quick short passes to Rabe and two well-timed scrambles, he marched Coastal into the red zone. With 10 seconds left, Vaughn burned a timeout. Many expected a field goal — instead, Underwood returned to the huddle and found Dareon Doctson on a swing pass for the back-breaking touchdown.

“We didn’t want to leave any doubt. This is our game,” Underwood said afterward, punctuating the big 1st half with a throat-slash gesture as he jogged off the field.

Ole Miss added a 69-yard touchdown on busted coverage in the third quarter, but by then the tide was permanent. Coastal’s offense rolled up nearly 600 yards, their defense forced a pair of turnovers, and the 66-27 victory delivered the program its first major bowl win in history.

The win sets up a grudge match in the semifinal. Coastal now faces Michigan — Underwood’s former school — after the Wolverines escaped Miami 26-24. Underwood prevailed over his former school in Week 12, but now the Wolverines will look to get revenge while aiming to keep Underwood from reaching the National Championship at their expense.

430 total yards and six combined touchdowns - this is why Big Game Bryce was your 2028 Heisman Trophy winner.

Image
Paul Carreon's quick touchdown came just 17 seconds into the game, but the Rebels momentum quickly faltered.

Image
David Stone was back in a real way - returning after missing all but one game of the regular season and notching a sack, forced fumble, and three TFLs.
