Coastal Adds Pair of 4* WRs To Bolster 11th Ranked Class

Image

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers may have built their dynasty under Kade Vaughn through aggressive use of the transfer portal, but with the program’s star power exploding on the national stage, high school recruiting is now catching up in a big way.

With the 2028 regular season winding down, Coastal sits at No. 11 nationally in the recruiting rankings, thanks in part to the commitments of two more blue-chip receivers: Carl Kopp (#129) and Bernie Bender (#231). Both Carolina products bring size (each checking in at 6’4”) and speed to an offense that could undergo major turnover in 2029.

“We’ve got a lot of guys offensively that will be moving on,” Vaughn acknowledged. “But that just means it’s next man up. Carl and Bernie know there will be snaps on the table right away — it’s just about proving they’re the right ones to take them. I’ve got no problem playing a freshman if he’s ready.”

The two big-bodied wideouts join the crown jewel of the class so far: ATH Nick Cobb (#59), who shocked many by spurning hometown Texas A&M to pledge to The Teal.

In total, Coastal holds 10 verbal commitments heading into Senior Night against Duke, but the class still has room — and momentum. The Chanticleers are currently the favorites to land DT Jermaine Uzomah (#91) and WR David Goedeke (#110), while sitting in a tight race for WR Frank DuBose (#96).

What was once unthinkable — Coastal Carolina competing head-to-head with power programs for elite high school talent — is now becoming routine under Vaughn. The transfer portal may have built the foundation, but prep recruits are lining up to help take the Chanticleers into the future.

Not winning the championship at this point would be a huge disappointment. Win or bust now

It definitely is. With the uncertainty of the future with Underwood graduating this could be our one shot for a while. QBs on the roster are meh so unless we hit the jackpot in the transfer portal again - who knows when we'll be this close.

Playing style is still killing me with a few but whatevs. Coach Prestige, Champ Contender, and Conference Prestige (Thanks ND) are all giving me the edge on some of the blue bloods

Conway, SC. - “Man, they had us in the first half, not gonna lie,” Bryce Underwood admitted after what is likely his final home game at Brooks Stadium. “But this is why we’re undefeated, why we’re mounting trophies, and why we expect to be in Tampa at the end of the year. You’ve got to come at us for four quarters with everything you’ve got. Ain’t no one done it yet.”

The Heisman winner delivered that line after putting together yet another gritty performance in a Senior Night classic. Honored pregame with a highlight reel of his record-breaking two years in Conway, Underwood walked off The Teal with the only legacy that really matters: winning.

But Duke didn’t make it easy.

The Blue Devils came out fearless, landing haymaker after haymaker behind Jayden Moore and Matt Verrett, while their defense stuffed Coastal’s early rhythm. By midway through the second quarter, Brooks Stadium was stunned as the scoreboard read 20–3, Duke.

Then the storm came.

Jeremiah McClellan jump-started the rally with a breathtaking 66-yard sideline catch-and-run that sent a charge through the crowd. Minutes later, he snagged another touchdown, and just like that, it was a three-point game. Duke silenced the rally with a perfectly executed two-minute drill capped by a touchdown with 19 seconds left, giving them a 27–17 halftime lead.

McClellan wasn’t done. His third score of the night early in the third quarter pulled Coastal within a field goal. Then came the defensive spark: Dalton Dexter drilled Verrett on a bubble screen, Jo’Ziah Edmond scooped the fumble, and six plays later Underwood danced into the end zone for Coastal’s first lead.

Duke briefly stole it back with an 11-play march capped by Alphonso Croom’s second TD grab. But from there, it was all Chanticleers.

Underwood engineered a bruising 14-play drive, converting three fourth downs before diving across the goal line himself. After Jesus Mendez tacked on a field goal, the dagger came courtesy of Josiah Persinger, who read Blake Barnett’s deep shot perfectly and made a centerfielder-style interception. The final Coastal touchdown sent the crowd into a frenzy as chants of “Mount ’Em!” echoed through Conway.

The 48–34 win was hardly clean, but it was telling. The Chanticleers absorbed Duke’s best shot, bent but never broke, and finished their third straight undefeated regular season with another trophy for the wall.

Now, with conference championship week looming, Coastal Carolina enters the wait-and-see game — hoping their résumé is enough to lock down a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.

Image
McClellan's 3rd TD was just as impressive as the first two, snagging this deep shot to keep Coastal rolling in the 2nd half.

Image
Jayden Moore caught the Chants defense napping with this slant route turned 75 yard touchdown.

Image
With Duke poised to push the lead back go 17 Dalton Dexter rocked Matt Verrett and turned the tide of the 2nd half.
