I'm hoping once we get against lesser athletically gifted teams they'll come down. My receivers haven't been getting any separation against these P4 teams (my receiver room is low key trash). But that's going to be our undoing is if we get into a shoot out and I've got to press the ball deep

Huntington, WV. -Coastal Carolina improved to 5–0 with a 41–20 win in Huntsville on Saturday, but the final score doesn’t tell the full story. Marshall gave the Chanticleers everything they could handle — and had it not been for a blistering start, things might’ve ended very differently.
“If you take away the 24–0 start, we lose this game,” admitted head coach Kade Vaughn postgame. “We’ve got to do a better job keeping our foot on the pedal. We can’t let teams climb back in.”
It echoed a familiar theme from Coastal’s win over East Carolina two weeks ago, when the Chants jumped out to a 31–0 halftime lead but went scoreless in the second half. This time, Coastal responded when it mattered most, outscoring Marshall 10–0 in the fourth quarter to stretch a 31–20 nail-biter into a more comfortable final margin. The defense forced two fourth-down stops and added a late interception to seal the win.
Still, it wasn’t a perfect afternoon.
Junior quarterback Roquan Barber tossed a pair of costly second-quarter interceptions, which directly led to 10 of Marshall’s 13 first-half points. Once again, the usually steady QB struggled to find rhythm.
With Bill Davis sidelined due to an oblique injury, it was up to former Marshall running back Michael Allen to carry the load — and he delivered in a big way against his old team, racking up 154 rushing yards and another 22 through the air, plus a touchdown.
While Marshall did manage to reach 20 points, the Chanticleers’ defense continued its impressive run, logging five sacks, two interceptions, and holding their opponent’s quarterback to under 50% completion rate.
“Our new guys are showing why we brought them in,” said defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson. “This was always the plan — build a unit that can win one-on-ones and force opponents into mistakes when they try to create explosive plays.”
Despite giving up a few big moments, Coastal’s defense limited Marshall to just 225 total yards and a paltry 1.3 yards per carry after sacks were factored in.
Now back home in Conway, Coastal Carolina will host 2–2 Georgia Southern next weekend at Brooks Stadium, looking to stay unbeaten — and more importantly, consistent — as Sun Belt play rolls on.

Coastal vowed to be more explosive offensively, but turnover remains an issue as Barber tossed two more in the win.

Trevor Holton continuing to prove the gamble moving him to corner was correct with an interception and three PBUs - plus a sack - in the win.

Ty Lockwood with an explosive 48 yard reception as he left two Coastal Carolina defenders in the dust.

Conway, SC. - This was brutal. For all the hype surrounding Coastal Carolina entering the weekend, not even the most overzealous Chanticleer fan could have predicted the beatdown that unfolded at Brooks Stadium. From the opening snap, Coastal made it clear: Georgia Southern didn’t belong on the same field.
Faced with an early 4th-and-2 near midfield, head coach Kade Vaughn stayed true to form — aggressive. The gamble paid off, as Aziah Johnson took an orbit-motion pass 50 yards to the house. One play, one score, and the floodgates opened.
After Bill Davis bulldozed in to make it 17–0, the rout accelerated. Josiah Persinger recovered a fumbled kickoff and returned it for a touchdown. Minutes later, after OJ O’Neal’s long touchdown grab pushed the lead to 31–7, Georgia Southern fumbled another kickoff — this time setting up a quick-strike TD pass from Roquan Barber to Michael Allen, Barber’s third touchdown toss of the half.
The Eagles went three-and-out on their next drive, and with seconds left before the break, Barber capped his day with a 1-yard touchdown plunge to give Coastal a staggering 45–7 halftime lead.
And it didn’t stop there.
Georgia Southern coughed up a third fumbled kickoff early in the second half — once again recovered for a score — and that was the cue for Vaughn to pull his starters. Even with the second unit on the field, Coastal tacked on a touchdown and a field goal while Georgia Southern left their starters in through the third quarter, finally managing a cosmetic touchdown in what ended as a 62–14 demolition.
“You don’t get many like this,” Vaughn told his team postgame. “Enjoy it. But remember — you can’t carry points into next week. And we’ve got a team down in Mississippi that’s itching to humble us.”
The Chants are 6–0, ranked No. 22 in the country, and heading to Hattiesburg for a rematch with a familiar foe — a Southern Miss (4-2) squad looking to spoil Coastal’s Sun Belt dreams and avenge last years Sun Belt Championship Game defeat.

I'll take that! Josiah Persinger scooping the fumble and easily waltzing into the end zone.

An interception led to this deep bomb to Josh Dallas and for a moment it appeared the Eagles were going to make a game out of it - then the wheels didn't just fall off, they disintegrated.

Michael Allen's 10 yard touchdown run at the 2 minute warning proved to be the difference as Coastal survived a tough test against Southern Miss.

Hattiesburg, MS. - In what can only be described as an old-school cock fight — Chanticleer vs. Golden Eagle — Coastal Carolina clawed past Southern Miss with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, earning a gritty 24-17 win in a rematch of the 2025 Sun Belt Championship Game.
It was another roller coaster outing for junior quarterback Roquan Barber, who was once brought in to stop this kind of erratic play. Instead, Barber opened the game with a field goal drive, then followed it up with back-to-back interceptions on the next two possessions — directly gifting Southern Miss 10 points. The low point came midway through the third quarter when Barber, fighting for the end zone, fumbled at the goal line. The ball squirted into the end zone and was recovered by the Golden Eagles for a touchback.
Southern Miss capitalized on the chaos early, leaning on quarterback KaMario Taylor and bruising runner JQ Grey, who racked up 40 yards on a methodical touchdown drive capped by a 6-yard score. Taylor’s 26-yard scramble had set it up, and while he occasionally made Coastal’s defense pay with his legs, the Chanticleers would eventually flip the script.
Coastal’s defense notched seven sacks on the night — including a pair on the Eagles’ final possession — as the front seven grew more relentless with each passing series.
Still trailing 17-10 midway through the fourth quarter, Coastal took over after a quick three-and-out and embarked on a 14-play, 66-yard drive. Twice on fourth down, Barber extended the possession, including a key completion to freshman Trishtin Glass for the game-tying touchdown on a six-yard slant.
After another Southern Miss punt — this time courtesy of an Aakil Washington sack — Coastal began what would become the game-winning drive. But drama struck again.
On the second play of the series, Ja’Marion Wayne hauled in an RPO swing pass and was drilled immediately, popping the ball loose. Southern Miss recovered, but before the Golden Eagles could even send their offense back onto the field, Coach Vaughn’s challenge flag was already in the air.
The ruling was overturned, and Coastal made it count.
Ten plays later, with the two-minute warning looming, Michael Allen slashed in from ten yards out for his first rushing touchdown of the year — giving the Chanticleers their first lead since the opening drive.
KaMario Taylor wasn’t done yet. A 17-yard strike to Davis Dalton and a spin-out scramble, evading LJ McCray in the process, netted 34 yards had Southern Miss back in striking range. But when the moment mattered most, Coastal’s defense hit another gear.
McCray responded with a sack. Then veteran linebacker Luke Murphy delivered another on third down. Facing a desperate 4th and long, Taylor’s final heave floated harmlessly out of bounds — and Coastal had survived.
“I said last week this was going to be a dog fight — or cock fight, I suppose,” Vaughn said postgame with a weary grin. “Hats off to Southern Miss. They came to knock us out of the spotlight and rip that bold number next to our name off the board.
Better luck next time.”
Coastal Carolina, now 7-0 and ranked No. 20 in the nation, enters a much-needed bye week before hosting Old Dominion in Week 8. With Roquan Barber already at 12 turnovers — more than he had in the entire 2025 season — the Chanticleers will spend their off week trying to steady their quarterback before the home stretch.

The first of back-to-back interceptions by the Golden Eagles as Barber's passing woes continue.

McCray continues to bring SEC caliber play week in and week out - recording another sack and a half while nearly ending the Golden Eagles final drive with a fumble that was recovered by Southern Miss.

JQ Grey was explosive for the Golden Eagles early, but as the game wore on the Chants dialed up the intensity and left the Golden Eagles little choice but to take to the air.[/i
