I'm starting to get a feel for this playbook and Barber's increased THP makes a huge difference.
the two missed field goals did not help, but definitely had me sweatingYaBoyRobRoy wrote: ↑18 Jul 2025, 14:40I know you were sweating as they climbed back into it. Nice win over the Alma mater.

Coach Vaughn Joins "Chants Up!"
By The Teal Wave - October 2025
Ripp Hamilton (RH): What’s up, Teal Nation! I’m Ripp Hamilton, your caffeine-powered student voice of “Chants Up!” — the pod where Coastal Carolina football is life and everything else is halftime. And today, I’m fired up, because the man in the teal aviators just strolled into the studio. Head Coach Kade Vaughn, welcome aboard!
Kade Vaughn (KV): Appreciate the invite, Ripp. Been itching to chop it up with you.
RH: Coach, every player I talk to says your prep is “borderline maniacal.” Where did that obsession start?
KV: Winters in Fairbanks, Alaska. No snowmobiles, no ice fishing—just miles of film and a busted space heater. I wasn’t the fastest dude on the field, so I had to know where the ball was going before the other guy did. For me, preparation is how you go home a winner.
RH: And that spilled over when you were grooming guys like Sam Howell and Drake Maye at UNC?
KV: Exactly. Coach Brown pulled me aside and said, “You’ve been coaching QBs your whole life—you just happen to teach ‘em routes.” Once I zoomed out, it clicked. Film at sunrise, walkthroughs at midnight—it’s the Kobe “job’s-not-finished” mindset.
RH: Everyone expected fireworks on offense, but your “Teal Defenders” are 23rd in points per game, 16th in yards, 2nd in sacks, and best in the nation against the run. How?
KV: First, shout-out DC Jeremiah Johnson and the staff—they’re bulldogs. Second, we tackle problems the David Goggins way: embrace the suck and stay hard. Yeah, teams throw on us—we’re 116th in pass yards—but that’s by design. Stop the run, unleash the pass rush, slam the door in the red zone. “Any way necessary” is inked on the whiteboard.
RH: Three one-score games in four weeks and a mid-season quarterback change. Walk us through it.
KV: Turnovers. Period. Emmett Brown is a warrior, but you can’t spot opponents two giveaways a game. Roquan stepped in, managed the moment, and—when our backs were against the wall—dropped 300 yards like it was nothing. We won’t air-raid every Saturday, but now defenses have to prepare for it.
RH: You kept the entire staff when you took over, but rumor says we’ll see more of your spread-option Air Raid next year.
KV: We’ll sprinkle in concepts the rest of this season. Give me an offseason, and you’ll see tempo, four-wide, motion—yet at our core, we’re a chameleon. Run it 40 times or sling it 40; whatever wins the day.
RH: Be honest—how did it feel walking back into Kidd Brewer Stadium?
KV: Emotional. Boone was home—twice. Thought I’d coach there forever. Then the phone didn’t ring. So yeah, I told the boys “King Kong ain’t got nothin’ on us.” I’m not chasing 60 every week, but if we’re up big in the fourth, I’m not kneeling it out.
RH: Sitting atop the Sun Belt East. Does the title road run through Conway?
KV: Only if we handle business—one snap at a time. Bye week helps us get Jalen and Ja’Vin healthy. Three home games, one trip to Statesboro, and of course Columbia. You want our respect? Beat us.
RH: Speaking of Columbia… South Carolina, Week 13. #1 team, Heisman chatter for LaNorris Sellers. Circle on the calendar?
KV: Biggest test on paper, sure—but the test before that is whoever’s next on the schedule. Job’s not finished.
RH: Recruiting update: five more commits, CB Malik Northrop headlining, class ranked 42nd. And the big fish—five-star Javier—still visiting on senior night?
KV: That’s the plan. Georgia and South Carolina turned up the heat, but we’ve got no reason to believe he isn't going to make that scheduled visit. Just cause the big boys are involved now, we aren't going to back down. We think we belong and I think Javier believes that too.
RH: Coach, this was electric. Thanks for the time, and let’s do it again after you punch that ticket to the Sun Belt title game.
KV: Bet on it. Chants Up!

How are you liking the power spread playbook? I’m thinking about using it in one of my online dynasties, was going to check out LSU’s. Good luck against the struggling Herd

Not the biggest fan honestly - that's why I dropped that line about changing the playbook in the interview lol It's got some solid plays, but isn't blowing me away. I'll probably end up using either the Veer & Shoot Tennessee playbook or a version of Oregon & Georgia's combinedYaBoyRobRoy wrote: ↑19 Jul 2025, 00:38How are you liking the power spread playbook? Conway, SC. - The Marshall Thundering Herd stunned the Brooks Stadium crowd right out of the gate when Bryan Robinson broke four tackles and took the opening kickoff 101 yards to the house. But after that, it was all Coastal.
The Chanticleers shook off the early jolt and took control in the second quarter, never looking back on their way to a dominant 45-13 win. The victory pushes Coastal Carolina to 6-2 on the season and officially bowl eligible.
“It was an important mark for us,” said head coach Kade Vaughn. “After all the noise coming into the season, I know more than a few analysts wrote us off. I guess they’ve learned not to doubt the Teal anymore.”
He quickly added: “This wasn’t our only goal — just one step on the path to something greater.”
Coastal’s first drive, already trailing 7-0, stalled after a holding penalty wiped out progress. But after Marshall missed a 26-yard field goal on the ensuing possession, the momentum shifted for good.
A 13-play drive that started at their own 9-yard line ended with a 21-yard screen pass to Ja’Vin Simpkins, who followed blocks from Cane Berrong and Jameson Tucker into the end zone. The next drive? More of the same — a punishing 13-yard touchdown run from Jalen John extended the lead to 14-7.
With under two minutes left in the half, Coastal took over at their own 37. Looking for a spark, Vaughn dialed up a shot play — but kept Simpkins in as a checkdown. When pressure flushed Barber from the pocket, he rolled out and fired across his body toward Simpkins on a short curl.
“It was one of those moments where you’re yelling NO NO NO NO… YES!” laughed Vaughn at halftime.
Simpkins hauled it in, shook off a defender, and weaved his way 63 yards for his second touchdown of the night and a 21-7 advantage.
Marshall’s last chance at momentum before halftime ended with a missed 56-yard field goal. Coastal used the short field to get into scoring position and, rather than force another play with nine seconds left, Vaughn turned to kicker Haden Tessier. After two misses the week prior, Tessier delivered a 40-yard field goal to give Coastal a 24-7 lead at the break.
Coastal opened the second half with a statement drive: 15 plays, 82 yards, chewing over seven minutes off the clock, capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass to Tucker — Barber’s third of the day.
Marshall did find the end zone late on a 45-yard bomb, but the game was long out of reach by then. Coastal responded emphatically with two more touchdowns in the final minute, both set up by failed fourth-down conversions by the Herd.
When asked about the tense postgame handshake with Marshall head coach Tony Gibson, Vaughn didn’t mince words.
“He went for it twice in the final minute, then got mad we ran the ball?” said Vaughn, shaking his head. “He started to ask what was with the late touchdowns — I just cut him off. Told him, ‘Don’t give me the ball on my side then.’ And that was that.”
Roquan Barber continued to stabilize the offense, now 4-0 since taking over as the starter. He’s thrown just three interceptions during that stretch and has already surpassed Emmett Brown’s passing touchdown total for the year. Meanwhile, Coastal welcomed back both Jalen John (98 yards, 2 TDs) and Ja’Vin Simpkins (165 all-purpose yards, 3 TDs), who were instrumental in the rout.
With the win, the Chanticleers stay a half-game ahead of Old Dominion atop the Sun Belt East Division. The Monarchs sit at 4-1 in conference play — their lone loss coming against Coastal to start the Chanticleers’ current four-game win streak.
Next up for Vaughn and the Chants: a home matchup against Georgia State (2-6) before hitting the road for two straight.

Robinson left the Chanticleers falling all over themselves after breaking four tackles en route to the 101 yard kickoff return.

Barber celebrating after his miraculous cross-body touchdown to Ja'Vin Simpkins in another solid day for the former backup turned starter.

This late bomb to Antonio Harmon was the only spark in an otherwise rough offensive showing for The Herd.

Coastal Continues To Add Talent - Decision By Javier Kugbila Looming
By The Teal Report - November 2025

As the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers continue to stack wins on the field, head coach Kade Vaughn keeps building momentum off it — adding more depth to his first full recruiting class.
“We’re pleased to announce that four more players have signed official letters of intent to join the Chants this fall!” the program shared on Twitter following their 45-13 rout of Sun Belt rival Marshall.
The latest additions bring Coastal’s 2025 recruiting class to 11 signees — all three-star prospects — and move the Chanticleers up to No. 24 in the early national rankings. It’s a strong start for Vaughn’s first cycle in Conway, but all eyes remain on one name still looming large.
The top target — five-star athlete Javier Kugbila — has yet to make a decision. And according to multiple reports, his interest may be fading.
“I’m hearing more and more that Javier is leaning toward the bigger programs in South Carolina and Georgia, rather than the scrappy upstart Chanticleers,” reported John Whittle of 247Sports. “He hasn’t eliminated Coastal from contention, but the growing speculation is that he may not even make it to his scheduled Week 14 visit in Conway.”
Kugbila is set to visit South Carolina next week, followed by a trip to Georgia in Week 12. Many in Conway had hoped the proximity to Myrtle Beach — and Vaughn’s player-centric culture — might help sway the Raleigh native. But for now, the buzz seems to be moving in a different direction.
“They might miss on the big fish,” said Chants Up! host Ripp Hamilton with a note of optimism, “but if Coach Vaughn keeps landing quality guys who fly under the radar, Coastal’s going to be in a great spot next year.
“And depending on how they close out this season, there’s no reason to think Coastal won’t be a prime portal destination for guys looking to rebuild their star power.”
