Conway, SC. - The Kade Vaughn era officially arrived at Brooks Stadium on Saturday, and while the first act had its share of hiccups, Coastal Carolina did enough to put away Division II rival Charleston Southern in a 49-27 win.

“Wasn’t the prettiest, and there’s plenty we need to clean up,” Vaughn admitted postgame, flashing his trademark grin. “But that’s for Monday. These guys worked hard all week to put last week behind them, and they did just that. They deserve to celebrate.”

It didn’t start as planned for the Chanticleers (1-1). A holding penalty killed their opening drive, and Charleston Southern answered with a methodical 14-play march capped by a short field goal to take a 3-0 lead.

Then Ja’Vin Simpkins happened.

The junior running back put the Brooks Stadium crowd on its feet, turning a routine screen pass into a 72-yard weaving sprint to the end zone for the first Chanticleer touchdown of 2025. It was only the beginning of a career night for Simpkins, who added a one-yard score later in the half and finished with 175 total yards and three touchdowns.

But Coastal’s growing pains continued. A 49-yard Simpkins run set up a red-zone chance, only for quarterback Emmett Brown to be picked off in the end zone. Another promising drive ended with a missed field goal as time expired in the first half, leaving Coastal up just 14-6 and plenty of work to do.

Charleston Southern struck early in the third quarter with a long strike to Jalen Parrish that set up an 18-yard touchdown run by Xavier Craig. The Buccaneers went for two to tie but were denied when linebacker Luke Murphy burst through for a sack, preserving Coastal’s slim 14-12 lead.

Murphy wasn’t done. The senior racked up two more sacks in the third quarter to help swing momentum, and the Chanticleers finally found their rhythm. Brown hit Ja’Marion Wayne for 35 yards to set up Jalen John’s 16-yard touchdown, igniting a four-score avalanche that ballooned Coastal’s lead to 42-12 late in the fourth.

Charleston Southern showed late life with back-to-back deep balls to Parrish (58 and 53 yards) and an onside kick recovery to cut the gap, but Vaughn’s Chanticleers had the last word. With under two minutes left, Brown found Jameson Tucker on a post route for a final exclamation point.

Asked about the decision to stay aggressive late, Vaughn didn’t flinch.

“They were chucking it deep down 30 and trying onside kicks,” he said. “That’s fine. But when we got it back? Em had the green light. If they want to keep running it up, we can too — and we plan on doing it better.”

While Coastal’s defense tightened up compared to last week’s loss at Virginia — allowing 245 passing yards versus 375 — big plays remain an issue.

“We’ll take the good with the bad,” said veteran safety Dre Pinckney. “We got more pressure today, big credit to Luke [Murphy]. Now we’ve got to tighten up the back end, and that starts with me.”

The Chanticleers stay home next week for a pivotal matchup against in-state rival East Carolina (2-0). For Vaughn and Coastal, Saturday was far from flawless — but it was progress. And for a program embracing its bold new identity, that’s enough for now.

I played a few games on it with 25 to make sure it wasn't too bright. But it is fun the more I am there and the atmosphere feels bigger than a small school. Should be fun to get the place rocking soon :melo2:

Conway, SC. -Coastal Carolina has quickly established two distinct identities this season—early turnovers and dramatic second-half comebacks. Both trends continued as the Chanticleers overcame four first-half turnovers and a 21-10 halftime deficit to stun the East Carolina Pirates, 28-21, at Brooks Stadium. The win improved Coastal's record to 2-1 in head coach Kade Vaughn's first season.

"Obviously, we want to cut down on those early mistakes," Vaughn admitted postgame. "Three straight games with at least one first-half turnover isn't the recipe for winning. But these young men keep proving the naysayers wrong—they're built for this."

The game began ominously for Coastal. Quarterback Emmett Brown’s opening drive ended with an interception after overthrowing receiver Jameson Tucker. Three plays later, East Carolina’s London Montgomery scored easily on a 35-yard run, quickly putting the Pirates up 7-0.

On Coastal’s next possession, Brown converted a critical third-and-15 with a 26-yard pass to Malcolm Gillie, then ran for 25 yards. But while fighting for extra yardage, Brown lost a costly fumble—his second turnover in as many drives. Coastal’s defense initially held firm and even created a turnover of their own when Lionel Whittaker intercepted a pass, setting up the offense in good position.

A promising drive highlighted by a 24-yard catch by Ja'Vin Simpkins ended abruptly when Simpkins left the game with an ankle injury. Without their leading playmaker, Coastal settled for a 44-yard field goal.

East Carolina quickly responded with an 11-play drive capped by a touchdown pass from Katin Houser to Jaquaize Pettaway, extending their lead to 14-3. Moments later, Brown's third turnover—a second interception—set up another quick Pirates touchdown, making the score 21-3.

Disaster struck again on Coastal’s next possession when Brown threw his third interception of the half—his fourth overall turnover. However, the Chanticleers' defense quickly rallied, as Dante Thomas intercepted Houser to give Brown one final chance at redemption before halftime. Thomas sprinted to the sideline and handed the intercepted ball directly to his quarterback, punctuating the gesture with a supportive nod and tap on Brown's helmet.

When asked postgame about the significance of his action, Thomas spoke candidly.

"Just letting him know we've got his back," the senior safety explained

Coastal seized momentum after halftime. A quick defensive stop led to a methodical 13-play drive ending with Tucker’s second touchdown catch, a 20-yard jump ball from Brown. Brown then scrambled for the two-point conversion, making it a three-point game at 21-18.

Another quick defensive stop gave Coastal the ball back, and Brown methodically picked apart East Carolina's defense. A false start penalty on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line forced Coastal to settle for a tying field goal.

Following another Pirates punt, Coastal faced a chaotic sequence. A 63-yard touchdown pass to Gillie was negated by holding. Brown was injured after taking a hard hit, forcing backup quarterback MJ Morris into action. Morris's impressive first pass—a 35-yard completion—was also erased by holding, leading to an improbable third-and-40.

On the ensuing desperation screen pass, Damion Clayborn miraculously converted with a 41-yard reception. Two plays later, Gillie sprinted into the end zone on a 34-yard RPO catch, putting Coastal ahead 28-21.

East Carolina fought back, driving into scoring position, but Coastal’s defense responded with consecutive sacks by Ibrahim Diawara and Darrion Henry-Young. The Pirates' field goal attempt hit the upright, preserving Coastal’s lead.

A final defensive stand by Coastal sealed the dramatic comeback, with Robby Washington breaking up Houser’s pass attempt on fourth down with 17 seconds left.

Postgame, Coach Vaughn noted minor injury concerns to key players Simpkins, Jalen Johns, Brown, and Noah Arinze, but confirmed none were officially sidelined.

"They're dealing with nagging injuries and wear-and-tear," Vaughn explained. "That's on me to manage better moving forward. We'll monitor their health closely and lean on them less in upcoming games."

The Chanticleers now turn their attention to Sun Belt Conference play, beginning with a road trip next week against South Alabama (1-2).

Solid back-to-back wins. Interesting to see Morris get the call in that one after 3 INTs by Brown.

Good start to the season, but Emmett Brown is going to have to cut back on those interceptions if the team wants to get some bigger wins.

Also, [ br][\br] is a line break.

If it ain't Coastal, it ain't Carolina :blessed:

P.S. Just dawned on me that you've got Jalen John on your squad. Loved using him at UMass.
