Now Or Never: Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2025 Season Preview
By The Teal Wave Report – July 2025

There’s a storm brewing in Conway. A new head coach. A revamped roster. A fan base starving for another taste of national relevance.
After back-to-back middling seasons, the Chanticleers have handed the keys to 35-year-old offensive savant Kade Vaughn, who’s already made waves with his bold approach and high-octane playbook. Now comes the hard part: turning potential into results on the teal turf of Brooks Stadium.
Offense: New Faces, Same Goals
The departure of program legend Grayson McCall to the transfer portal last year could have spelled disaster for Coastal Carolina’s offense. Instead, the unit showed flashes of resilience, finishing 2024 with more points scored than the year prior — a testament to the system, if not the consistency.
This year, the offensive identity gets a full overhaul under Vaughn, aided by a transfer-heavy roster.
Vaughn ended any speculation by naming Emmett Brown the starting quarterback heading into the season opener. The San Jose State transfer brings plus athleticism and sharp accuracy to the position, though his limited arm strength compared to the other QBs was noted during camp.
“We need to find a way to generate offense early and often,” Vaughn said. “In my experience, a versatile, mobile quarterback helps lighten the offensive load immediately.”
Brown beat out MJ Morris, a Maryland transfer who posted 350 yards and five touchdowns in limited action last year, and redshirt sophomore Tad Hudson, who started Coastal’s 2024 bowl game and impressed with 173 yards and two scores. JUCO standout Samari Collier also figures to add depth as a dual-threat option.
Whoever’s under center has weapons to work with. Leading receiver Jameson Tucker returns after a six-touchdown, 17-yards-per-catch season. Ball State transfer Malcolm Gillie, known for his explosive kick returns, will now feature prominently as a receiver. Slot man Malik Meiga gives the offense a reliable mid-range target.
The backfield also received an infusion of talent, with Jalen John (UMass) arriving after a 583-yard, five-touchdown campaign and Ja’Vin Simpkins adding a speedy change-of-pace option.
The offensive line is anchored by Nick Del Grande (All-Sun Belt honorable mention) and veteran center Thomas Johnson. While the right side needs shoring up, last year’s unit was the Sun Belt’s best in pass protection.
When pressed on whether his new-look Chanticleers could realistically run his high-tempo, spread-option attack in Year One — given the short runway to install it — Vaughn didn’t flinch:
“This group showed a ton of fight last year bouncing back after losing Grayson, and we’re ready to build on that — our way. Emmett gives us flexibility in the backfield, but don’t box us into one style. One week we might pound it on the ground with him running the option; the next, we’re going five wide, no huddle, and letting Jameson and Malcolm light up the scoreboard. That’s the philosophy now: stay dangerous, stay unpredictable, and stay a step ahead. Whatever a defense gives us, we’ll take it — and then make them regret it.”
Defense: Can the Chants Get Stingy?
Last year’s defense thrived on turnovers — scoring five touchdowns off takeaways — but struggled to hold up against the run and was vulnerable in the secondary. Vaughn and new DC Jeremiah Johnson hope to flip that narrative.
The strength lies in the linebacking corps, led by graduate Shane Bruce (team-high 75 tackles) and Wyatt Gedeon (36 tackles in 10 games). Up front, massive nose tackle Sawyer Goram-Welch (32 tackles) is the anchor, while New Mexico transfer Noah Arinze will be counted on for an immediate pass-rushing impact. Idaho transfer Aamarii Notice adds depth to the interior rotation.
The secondary welcomes back veteran safety Dre Pinckney, who’s fully recovered from a 2024 injury. Cornerback Zach Cody, who tallied 15 tackles as a true freshman, leads a young but promising group.
Key Dates at Brooks Stadium
Sept. 6 vs Charleston Southern (ESPN+) – The Vaughn era officially kicks off in Conway against an in-state foe. Expect the Chants to show out in their first home game of the season - especially if their opener at Scott Stadium lands flat.
Oct. 30 vs Marshall (ESPN, 7:30 PM) – A primetime Thursday night showdown on national TV. This could be the first signature win opportunity for Vaughn to show the country what the new look Chanticleers are made of.
Nov. 29 vs James Madison (Senior Night) – Homecoming, Senior Night, and a chance to measure Coastal against the Sun Belt’s gold standard.
The Bottom Line: Boom or Bust
This is high-risk, high-reward football in Conway. Vaughn’s swagger and schematic versatility could light the teal turf on fire — or it could be a season of growing pains as his system and personality settle in.
“You either boom or you bust. And me? I’m not built to bust,” Vaughn said with a flashy grin beneath a pair of teal-tinted aviators — an image already becoming synonymous with not just Coastal’s iconic teal turf, but their new head coach with the Alonzo Harris-esque confidence to take what he wants.
“If you’re lining up against us, you better bring more than your A-game, because we’re playing chess at full speed. And if you’re waiting for us to fold under pressure? Keep waiting. Pressure doesn’t break us — it builds us. Conway’s about to get loud, and trust me — there’s not a team in this league ready for the noise we’re bringing.”

In the few test games I played he fit my style the best. Not the biggest arm, but he's accurate and mobile
Week 2 vs FCS will give us a chance to further evaluate if he struggles in the opener.
It was late and I wanted to get the update out, looked this morning and hated how it turned out - they changed now

Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2025 Recruiting Preview
Coastal Carolina and first-year head coach Kade Vaughn enter 2025 with a daunting challenge on the recruiting trail: 28 seniors set to graduate, not to mention the potential ripple effects of the transfer portal at season’s end — a reality former head coach Tim Beck lamented publicly in what ultimately became his final straw in Conway.
“We’ve definitely got areas we need to address — yesterday,” Vaughn said candidly when asked about Coastal’s big board heading into the new season. “But we’re not afraid of work. Are some guys likely to leave in the offseason? We’ll see. Maybe we hit the big time and no one wants out. Maybe they all leave. Either way, we’re recruiting with the belief we’re keeping our underclassmen. If that changes, we’ll pivot and attack the portal.”
With 28 scholarships opening up, the Chanticleers are reportedly casting a wide net early in the cycle. That said, the staff has already zeroed in on two major areas of need: wide receiver and defensive line — which account for nine of the outgoing seniors.
As for Vaughn’s early returns on the trail? It’s still too early to tell how the charismatic new head coach will impact Coastal’s recruiting footprint. But there are a couple of promising signs. Athlete Dalton Dexter (Fort Lauderdale, FL) and cornerback Malik Northrop (Fort Mill, SC) — both top-500 prospects — have Coastal ranked No. 1 on their early lists.
