this class had him graded faster with better catching, although Smith had the better AWR grade and route running :druski:

Pittsburgh Trades Up In 2nd Round For South Carolina DT

Image

Washington, DC. - The Pittsburgh Steelers wasted no time addressing their defensive line concerns on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, trading up with the Arizona Cardinals to select South Carolina defensive tackle Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy with the seventh pick of the second round (39th overall).

The Steelers sent their original second-round pick (No. 64 overall), a third-round selection, a seventh-round pick and veteran safety Juan Thornhill to Arizona in exchange for the higher selection.

The move comes one day after Pittsburgh faced criticism for selecting Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams at No. 5 instead of addressing their interior defensive line depth. Brownlow-Dindy was considered a potential first-round talent earlier in the draft process but slipped due to consistency concerns.

"Dynamic player with huge upside, but he disappeared at times for the Gamecocks over the past two seasons," ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said. "If the Steelers can tap into that potential he has? Could be a steal. Great hands and he does a great job leveraging himself in the gaps. But commitment and consistency are a key factor in his draft slide."

Brownlow-Dindy (6-foot-4, 315 pounds) recorded 47 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, and four sacks last season at South Carolina. His best stretch came during a four-game midseason run where he totaled five tackles for loss and three sacks, but he managed just one tackle for loss over his final four games.

Sources told ESPN that Arizona was hesitant to move down in Round 2 without receiving a veteran player in return, making Thornhill's inclusion essential to completing the deal.

Three new QBs out west, all trying to beat Purdy.

I like the picks. Top 5 playmaker plus a dog on the line now. So far this draft is a win.

Thank you! WR is a big money position, so having Williams and Branch locked up cheap will help us fill out the roster going forward. Dindy probably wont' get much PT to start with, but hes got a hidden dev so Im hopeful

Steelers Sign Five UDFA

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed five undrafted free agents following the conclusion of the 2027 NFL Draft:

Oregon WR Kyler Kasper
Texas HB Jerrick Gibson
Wake Forest CB Zamari Stevenson
Miami WR Joshisa Trader
Auburn QB Jackson Arnold

Kyler Kasper is the best of the bunch, according to sources closer to the Steelers. Once viewed as a potential Day 2 pick until a knee cartilage tear midway through his senior season derailed the former Ducks draft grade. While healthy for the combine, Kasper declined to work out further damaging his draft stock.

Pittsburgh also signed four veterans after the NFL Draft, including former Steeler Jonnu Smith.

Steelers Pre-Season Position Battles To Watch

Image

Pittsburgh, PA. - With summer training camps in the rearview mirror, the Pittsburgh Steelers now turn their attention to the preseason as they look to answer a few lingering questions before mounting their Super Bowl title defense.

In years past, we've seen championship rosters gutted in the offseason as players parlay their postseason performances into lucrative contracts elsewhere. But GM Omar Khan has done an exceptional job leveraging cheap, multi-year deals for players with surprising on-field production. As a result, there isn't much turnover between the squad that took the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and the team expected to open the 2027 season against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Still, a few key position battles remain unsettled heading into the preseason. Here are the competitions to watch:

Starting Halfback

Pittsburgh has only three new starters heading into the 2027 season, and whoever lines up in the backfield alongside MVP Anthony Richardson is chief among them.

Kaleb Johnson is the presumed RB1 in the Steel City after scoring five of his nine touchdowns in the second half of last season, capped by his three-touchdown performance in the Super Bowl. But sources in Pittsburgh say Keaton Mitchell has been putting in work with the expectation of claiming the top spot, and he's made his intentions clear to the coaching staff.

Mitchell served as the third-down back last season and often provided a spark, tallying 700 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns of his own. His explosiveness and receiving ability make this a genuine competition rather than a coronation for Johnson.

Right Tackle

Following Trent Brown's injury-forced retirement, the Steelers acquired starting-caliber offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. in a trade with New Orleans. With Troy Fautanu sliding over to left tackle this season, Banks is expected to anchor the right side.

But former starting left tackle and first-round pick Broderick Jones enters camp with designs on reclaiming a starting role. "He's come back stronger and more motivated, I can say that much," said one team source.

For all intents and purposes, Banks Jr. is the starter. But if he struggles in his debut or Jones simply outshines him, the question becomes much harder to answer in Pittsburgh. The competition could determine whether Jones resurrects his first-round pedigree or settles into a swing tackle role permanently.

Strong Safety

Pittsburgh traded away DeShon Elliott's 108 tackles and 18 tackles for loss after signing former 49ers safety Ji'Ayir Brown to a three-year deal, a move that signaled the team's belief that Brown could fill the void. The expectation is that he'll be the Week 1 starter.

But versatile defensive back Isaiah Simmons was a key contributor for the Steelers last year and could earn significant time at strong safety heading into the season. His unique combination of size, speed and coverage ability gives Pittsburgh's defense an added dimension that's difficult to replicate.

"Simmons gives them more athletically than almost any player on the defense," one defensive coach said. "If he shines again this preseason, it would be hard for the Steelers not to give him additional reps."

The solution could be situational; Brown as the base strong safety, with Simmons deployed in sub-packages and matchup-specific situations. But don't be surprised if Simmons forces his way into a larger role if he continues to make plays throughout August.

And finally, while not an official battle, all eyes will be on how the Steelers integrate top-five pick Ryan Williams into the NFL's highest scoring offense from a season ago. With DK Metcalf and Zachariah Branch — who eclipsed 100 receptions, 1,000 yards, and 10 touchdowns as a rookie — already entrenched as the top two receivers, questions are swirling about how Pittsburgh will carve out meaningful touches for the former Crimson Tide standout. Williams' talent is undeniable, but finding consistent opportunities in an already crowded receiver room presents a challenge that will test offensive coordinator Brian Daboll's creativity throughout the preseason.

These battles may not grab headlines like quarterback competitions or edge rusher duels, but they'll play a significant role in determining whether Pittsburgh can defend its championship. The preseason will provide clarity, or create even more difficult decisions for the coaching staff.
