Coastal Carolina and NCAA Release Joint Statement Regarding Academic Irregularities

Conway, SC. - Coastal Carolina University and the NCAA Division I Committee on Academics today jointly announced the findings of an investigation into academic misconduct involving a university appointed tutor and three student athletes within the Chanticleer football program.

Following a review initiated in late November, it was determined that Rachael Fowler, an academic tutor employed by the university, provided advance access to final exam answers to three redshirt junior football student athletes: Trevor Bausby, Dexter Bibbs, and Jacques Howe. The misconduct centered on course examinations scheduled during the fall 2034 finals period.

The irregularities were first identified when the three student athletes scored within the 99th percentile, a performance level significantly inconsistent with their established academic records. The course professor reported the anomaly to the university’s academic integrity office, prompting an internal review. Upon confirming concerns regarding potential misconduct, Coastal Carolina University self-reported the matter to the NCAA.

Under the direction of former Athletics Director and current Senior Associate Vice President for Strategic Partnerships and Alumni Engagement Chance Miller, Coastal Carolina University fully cooperated with the NCAA investigation and acted swiftly to address the violations. The university provided complete access to internal communications, academic support structures, and relevant personnel.

As part of its response, the university implemented the following self-imposed penalties and corrective actions, which the NCAA has reviewed and accepted:
• Immediate dismissal of student-athletes Trevor Bausby, Dexter Bibbs, and Jacques Howe from the football program and withdrawal of their athletic eligibility.
• Termination of employment for tutor Rachael Fowler, effective immediately upon confirmation of her actions.
• Implementation of a comprehensive internal standards and oversight review for all athletic-department academic support personnel.
• A ban on all incoming transfer additions for the upcoming transfer window preceding the 2035 football season.
• A reduction of five (5) scholarships for the 2035–36 academic year recruiting cycle.

After reviewing Coastal Carolina’s prompt reporting, cooperation, and self-imposed penalties, the NCAA Division I Committee on Academics has determined that the university’s corrective actions are appropriate and sufficient given the scope of the violations.

Accordingly, the NCAA has accepted Coastal Carolina University’s self-imposed penalties as the official resolution of this case.

No additional sanctions such as probation, postseason restrictions, or scholarship reductions beyond those voluntarily implemented will be applied at this time.

However, the Committee reserves the right to impose further penalties should additional violations emerge or if future academic integrity concerns arise.

Coastal Carolina University reiterated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity and student athlete support.

“We appreciate the NCAA’s thorough review and acknowledgment of the decisive actions taken by our institution,” said Chance Miller. “This conduct does not reflect our values. We remain committed to strengthening oversight and ensuring this type of violation does not occur again.”

The NCAA Committee on Academics expressed appreciation for Coastal Carolina’s cooperation and timely reporting.

ay if she's getting trains ran on her by the football team, that's her business :druski:

Yes, no transfers is the real killer. Bibbs and Howe were projected to be #1 and #3 next year depending on if Foxworth declares. Our CB room is going to look rooooough

But it was necessary to realistically navigate out of the situation the randomizer put me in with what we had planned coming up :curtain:

Brian Hartline Announced As Freeman's Successor Amid Administrative Reshuffling

Image

Conway, SC. - Two weeks after Marcus Freeman stunned the college football world by departing Coastal Carolina for the vacant head coaching job at Georgia, the Chanticleers have moved swiftly to stabilize the program. On Thursday morning, the university officially introduced Brian Hartline, former Ohio State offensive coordinator and nationally regarded recruiter, as the program’s next head coach.

The hire caps off a tumultuous six week span for Coastal Carolina, one that included an NCAA academic-misconduct investigation, a temporary administrative reshuffle, and the unexpected exit of a head coach who had been on campus less than a year.

Following the NCAA inquiry into academic irregularities involving a university tutor and three football players, Coastal Carolina president James Winebreak appointed former athletic director Chance Miller to manage the immediate compliance response and oversee the coaching search. Miller had stepped away from the AD role two years ago when Mike Buddie was hired, but the NCAA recommended a “continuity-focused oversight transition” after the misconduct was traced to lower level academic support personnel, not athletics leadership.

With Buddie’s contract containing a mutual-separation clause, and with the New York Yankees offering him an executive role in player personnel, the parties agreed to part amicably. Coastal officials described the move as a “stability reset,” allowing Miller, who had overseen the program’s rise to national prominence earlier in the decade, to resume the AD position permanently.

“Brian was the first guy on our list,” Miller said at the introductory press conference. “We wanted someone who saw Coastal Carolina as a destination job, not a stepping stone. No disrespect to Marcus Freeman, but that was always the concern. With Brian, the message from our first conversation was clear, he’s not chasing logos. He’s chasing championships.”

Hartline echoed the sentiment in his remarks.

“Conway isn’t an underdog anymore,” Hartline said. “This program is one of the most stable, successful, innovative programs in the country. There’s no reason not to view Coastal Carolina as a top five job nationally. Coach Vaughn raised the ceiling, Coach Freeman kept the momentum, and I plan to build on that foundation with our own twist.”

The former Ohio State assistant, renowned for his recruiting acumen, explosive passing-game design, and role in developing multiple NFL first round receivers, said he viewed Coastal as a place to establish a legacy.

“I’ve won championships as an assistant,” he said. “It’s been a decade since that parade, and I’m ready to chase more confetti. This time in teal.”

Hartline wasted no time assembling a staff that blends youth, innovation, and experience.

Walt Reyna, a former Chanticleer standout and last year’s linebackers coach, has been promoted to defensive coordinator, making him one of the youngest Power 5 coordinators in the nation at age 30. To support Reyna’s first year in the role, Coastal has hired veteran defensive coach Tom Allen—most recently Clemson’s defensive coordinator before stepping away from full-time coaching—to serve as a senior defensive analyst.

“It’s the best of both worlds,” Allen said. “I get to coach the game I love, mentor a rising star in Walt, and help Coastal contend for a championship without the grind of full-time on-field duties.”

Reyna said he’s embracing the challenge head on. “I’ve always taken pride in being that coach on the field presence, and I think our success during my tenure proved that. Getting to learn from Coach Freeman and Coach Pry last year was invaluable, and now, with Tom Allen supporting me, I’m ready to push this defense into a new era.”

On offense, Hartline is bringing in Connor McQueen, a rising coach with deep Air Raid and spread roots, who has spent the past decade in the NFL as a quarterbacks and game-planning assistant after learning under Lincoln Riley at both Oklahoma and USC.

“Connor has studied under some of the best,” Hartline said. “From Riley to Chip Kelly, he’s been in some of the most creative rooms in football. We’re going to collaborate heavily, and yes, we’re going to throw the ball. A lot.”

When asked whether the Chanticleers would resemble Ohio State’s spacing-heavy spread or adopt McQueen’s Air Raid influences, Hartline didn’t hesitate.

“We hired him for a reason. We’re airing it out.”

In a separate university release, Coastal Carolina confirmed that Chance Miller has been officially reinstated as athletic director. Buddie’s move to the Yankees was framed as an “amicable departure,” though multiple sources indicated that the academic-misconduct episode accelerated internal discussions about returning the department to the leadership model that guided the program through its record-breaking years.

“Sometimes institutions try to reinvent themselves when what they needed was already in place,” one source familiar with the transition said. “This return to Miller is about reassurance, stability, and getting Coastal back to what made them great.”

With Hartline now at the helm and the NCAA formally concluding its investigation with no probationary period imposed, the Chanticleers enter the offseason with a renewed sense of direction, and a head coach determined to keep Coastal among college football’s elite.

Whatchu got against Hartline?!

But, not my fault. These are the guys the game gives me. I tried to get Eric Morris hired, but even changing his schemes to fit Coastal's preferences didn't get him an offer.

This cycle it was either Brent Key (ew), Hartline (Brian Burnside technically but I changed his name once I hired him.) Or Lane Kiffin who didn't make sense to leave Tennessee for Coastal lmao

SEC Announces Formal Outreach To Clemson and Coastal Carolina Regarding Future Membership

The Southeastern Conference announced today that it has formally initiated discussions with Clemson University and Coastal Carolina University regarding potential membership beginning after the conclusion of the 2035–2036 athletic year.

The outreach comes following an extensive, months-long evaluation of competitive balance, geographic alignment, broadcast value, and long term strategic planning across the national college athletics landscape. The SEC’s assessment reflects shifting competitive dynamics across the region, including recent ACC expansion in the early 2030s and the continued evolution of football-driven realignment nationally.

“Over the last decade, the collegiate athletics environment has changed dramatically,” SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. “Our priority is to ensure the Southeastern Conference remains the premier competitive and economic platform for our institutions and student-athletes. Clemson and Coastal Carolina have demonstrated sustained excellence, national relevance, and a passionate regional footprint that fits squarely within the SEC’s long-term vision.”

In recent years, Clemson has consistently competed at the highest national level, maintaining a strong championship profile. Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina has emerged as one of the most compelling stories in college football: the three time National Champion (2028, 2032, 2033) and four time ACC Champion (2031-2034) with a growing national following and significant investment in facilities, enrollment growth, and media visibility.

“Clemson has been one of college football’s cornerstone programs for decades,” said Sankey. “Coastal Carolina’s rise has been remarkable, sustained excellence, a proven fan base, national TV resonance, and a commitment to growth.”

The SEC also acknowledged that the broader realignment landscape, including shifts in competitive expectations within the region, has opened avenues to evaluate previously unconventional configurations.

“Recent performance trends across the Southeast have created natural opportunities for schools to align with conferences that best match their athletic aspirations and competitive direction,” Sankey added.

As part of its evaluation, the SEC confirmed it has been engaged in ongoing dialogue with member institutions regarding the future competitive structure of the league. While no formal decisions have been made regarding current membership, the conference acknowledged that future adjustments to internal divisional formats and potential membership rotation are under consideration. .

These discussions come at a time when some long-tenured programs, notably South Carolina, within the league have expressed openness to models emphasizing competitive balance and institutional fit, conversations that have taken place amicably and collaboratively.

Clemson and Coastal Carolina will each enter a formal review period with the SEC during the coming months. The conference expects to make a final determination regarding invitations following the football season and before the start of the 2036 spring sports calendar.

Should both universities ultimately join, the integration process would begin after the completion of the 2035–2036 athletic year, allowing for appropriate scheduling adjustments, media rights coordination, and transition preparations.

“The SEC will proceed deliberately and transparently,” Sankey said. “We remain committed to strengthening our conference while preserving the rivalries, traditions, and competitive expectations that have defined the Southeastern Conference for generations.”
