It was just Marshall - who lost to an FCS team this year. The real test is when we head to Columbia. Do the Chants have a chance against the Cocks?

Rain, Sleet, Or Shine - Coastal Defends The Teal

While the Chanticleers have yet to come up with a playful name for their 2025 defense - Teal Defenders simply won't do - the D is keeping the pressure on with another 6 sacks while only allowing 167 total yards in another conference win.

Conway - SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers continue to set the pace in the Sun Belt East, steamrolling Georgia State 44-7 to improve to 5-1 in conference play and move one step closer to a berth in the Sun Belt Championship Game.
The Panthers opened the game with a promising drive, but it quickly fizzled. Coastal wasted no time capitalizing, as Ja’Vin Simpkins hauled in a 24-yard reception to set up a leaping two-yard touchdown grab by Ja’Marion Wayne. It was Simpkins’ only full drive of the night, but it helped spark the early onslaught.
After a pair of sacks stalled Georgia State’s next drive, the Chanticleers blocked the ensuing punt, giving them the ball at the Panthers’ 1-yard line. Roquan Barber tossed the second of his four touchdowns, pushing the lead to 14-0. The Panthers, desperate to respond, went for it on 4th and 5 from the Coastal 27 — only to see Christin Veilleux sacked once again.
A methodical drive fueled by Jalen John and Camerun Knox ended with Barber finding Knox on a 12-yard out route to extend the lead. The Chants weren’t done, as Barber connected on back-to-back chunk plays — a 30-yard contested grab by Wayne and a 20-yard strike to Jameson Tucker — to make it 28-0.
The Panthers’ last gasp before halftime ended in disappointment, with Veilleux floating a pass toward the goal line that was snatched out of the air by cornerback Lionel Whittaker to end the half.
Georgia State showed brief signs of life early in the third. Chams Diagne picked off Barber on an out route intended for Malick Meiga, and Veilleux capitalized with a 49-yard bomb to Ted Hurst. But the Panthers wouldn’t score again.
Coastal slammed the door with two more touchdowns in the second half — including another short Barber toss — and a safety tacked on for good measure to close out the 44-7 rout.
Barber delivered another efficient performance, going 17-of-20 for 169 yards and four scores. With Simpkins limited, the ground game remained effective behind Jalen John (98 yards) and Camerun Knox (78 yards).
“You can’t say enough about the way Camerun has been prepared,” said head coach Kade Vaughn postgame. “He’s stepped up whenever Ja’Vin’s been nicked up, and every time he’s come through.”
While the offense lit up the scoreboard, the defense once again stole the show. The Chanticleers racked up six sacks, held the Panthers to just 167 total yards, and added an interception — further cementing their status as the No. 24-ranked defense in the country. Not just in the Sun Belt — the nation.
“They’re definitely the driving force to our success,” said Barber. “They allow us to play patient and stay within the game plan because we know they’ve got our backs.”
Now 6-2 overall, Coastal heads into a crucial two-game road swing with a firm lead atop the Sun Belt East. With Old Dominion idle this week, the Chanticleers sit a full game and a half ahead. One more Monarchs loss — or a Coastal sweep — would lock up the division and a spot in the program’s first title game appearance since 2020.
But before they can start thinking about trophies, a major test looms.
In-state foe South Carolina, currently ranked No. 10 in the nation, awaits at the end of the road stretch. It’s a matchup that Coach Vaughn has circled — but he’s not getting ahead of himself.
“We can’t call it a rivalry — yet,” Vaughn said. “But we’re hoping to turn some heads in a few weeks.
“First things first — we’ve got to keep the pressure on OD with a win in Statesboro.”

The Chanticleers special teams stepping up with a blocked punt in the end zone to give Barber and the offense their shortest field of the season.

Ted Hurst elevating into the downpour for a 49 yard grab to put the only score on the board for Georgia State.

A lone interception non-withstanding Barber once again did a bang-up job keeping the Chanticleers offense rolling while tossing four more touchdowns.

Georgia Southern is probably the toughest conference game we've got left. Then the grindhouse of South Carolina.
