Went all out with that NCAA update, I see you! Simpkins 4th in Heisman :ooo:

Good job protecting the Teal!
That was my trade off for not doing NCAA updates every week. Those got tiresome in my first chise back at it and I didn't want to burn myself out on em, so three through ones a season feels like a decent trade off.

I was like really :drose:

Its cool, but also makes me feel awards are still slightly broken. He's got less than 700 all purpose yards and only 9 total touchdowns - no where near the tops in either category. So I think its still weighting receiving as a HB more impactful. But if he gets it, he gets it
:fuckem:

Business As Usual For Coach Vaughn And Coastal With Trip To Boone Looming
By The Teal Report - October 2025

Image

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are heading into their most anticipated game of the season as they prepare to travel to Boone, North Carolina, for a pivotal Sun Belt clash against Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers currently sit atop the Sun Belt West, and a win in Kidd Brewer Stadium wouldn’t just keep Coastal’s momentum rolling — it would mark a major step toward their first Sun Belt Championship Game appearance since the Jamey Chadwell era in 2020. It would also extend their winning streak in the rivalry to four straight.

But the bigger storyline this weekend won’t just be the football played between the lines.

It’s the return of Coastal Carolina head coach Kade Vaughn to the place he once called home.

A former three-star wide receiver, Vaughn spent five seasons in Boone before joining the Mountaineers’ coaching staff in 2016 under his former head coach Scott Satterfield. But when Satterfield departed for Louisville following the 2018 season, Vaughn was not retained by incoming head coach Eliah Drinkwitz — a decision that quietly shifted the trajectory of his coaching career.

Vaughn soon landed at North Carolina, first as a receivers coach and eventually as offensive coordinator in 2022. That same year, he made his first return to Boone as an opponent — calling plays in a wild 63-61 shootout victory for the Tar Heels. That chaotic game may have prepared him for the emotions of coaching against his alma mater, but this time is different.

This time, he’s the head coach. And this time, it’s personal.

“It’s not like this is a surprise game,” Vaughn said earlier this week, notably more reserved than usual. “It’s been on the schedule since before I took over. I made peace with not being in a place I considered my second home a long time ago. Right now, it’s about preparing for a conference game we need to win.”

When pressed on whether emotions would play a role, Vaughn didn’t flinch. “Is it going to be emotional being on the other sideline, in the wrong locker room? Probably. But that’s something I’ll handle in the moment. Right now? It’s about preparation. It’s about making some noise.”

Of course, reporters didn’t let him off the hook that easily. When reminded of a quote he gave while at UNC — joking about “hanging 60” on the Mountaineers — Vaughn only offered a smirk and lowered his teal-tinted aviators before waving for the next question.

No elaboration. No denial. Just Vaughn, leaning into the swagger that’s quickly defined his tenure at Coastal.

It’s clear he’s not interested in theatrics this week. But the silence said enough: this game matters.

While the emotional return to Boone will draw headlines, Coastal has plenty to play for on the field. A win would not only keep the Chanticleers near the top of the Sun Belt standings, but it would further cement their identity as a gritty, opportunistic team that thrives in close, ugly games — exactly the kind Vaughn has preached since his arrival in Conway.

One thing is certain: the Chanticleers won’t tiptoe into Boone. They’ll bring their usual edge, their blue-collar intensity, and a chip on their shoulder — just like their head coach.

And while Vaughn might insist this is “just another game,” don’t be surprised if he tries to make a statement.

The last time App State let him walk away, he found a way to come back stronger. This weekend, he’ll try to make sure they remember why.

Boone, NC. - Kade Vaughn may have spent the week brushing off the emotional weight of returning to his alma mater, but his team didn’t play like it. The Chanticleers roared out of the gates in Boone on Saturday, building a dominant 24-7 halftime lead en route to a 24-17 win over Appalachian State — and making sure their head coach left Kidd Brewer Stadium with a statement victory.

The tone was set early by Coastal’s defense, which forced a three-and-out on the Mountaineers’ opening drive before the offense answered with a grinding possession capped by a 40-yard Haden Tessier field goal. It was the only full drive of the game for standout RB Ja’Vin Simpkins, who exited with a hand contusion.

After another short Mountaineer possession, Roquan Barber quickly found a busted coverage and hit WR Malcolm Gillie in stride for a 39-yard touchdown. Appalachian State responded with a sharp touchdown drive of their own, but Coastal countered just as quickly with a 44-yard strike to Cane Berrong, then turned a forced fumble by DE Noah Arinze into points just before the half. Barber capped the drive himself with a quarterback dive from a yard out to push the lead to 24-7.

“We’re just trying to do coach proud,” Barber said at halftime after going 13-for-14 with 174 yards and three total touchdowns in the opening two quarters. “We want to show these guys why we’re happy they passed on him so we could eventually grab him.”

Coastal’s defense — which entered the week ranked in the top 50 nationally — looked the part, tallying four first-half sacks and dominating the trenches throughout.

The second half, however, was a different story. With Simpkins sidelined and miscues piling up, the Chanticleer offense struggled to build on their lead. Barber threw an end zone interception, and Tessier missed two more field goals — bringing his season total to 6-of-12 — as Coastal was held scoreless after halftime.

Still, the defense did enough to hold on. Appalachian State managed just 140 yards in the second half, with 81 of those coming on a single fourth-quarter drive that ended in a touchdown following a missed field goal. A fumble by Berrong briefly gave App State life, but the defense stiffened and added a fifth sack to force a field goal, keeping the Mountaineers at arm’s length the rest of the way.

With the win, Coastal Carolina improved to 5-2 (3-1 Sun Belt), continuing their rise in Vaughn’s first season at the helm — despite injuries to both starting running backs, a midseason quarterback change, and persistent kicking woes.

“We’re going to have to rethink our red zone offense if Haden can’t get more consistent,” Vaughn admitted postgame. “Either that, or Logan [Haines] starts getting those short-yardage kicks. We’ll figure it out.”

When asked how it felt to be back in Boone — where he played and coached before being let go in 2018 — Vaughn smirked.

“When you know what to expect, you’re hardly surprised,” he said. “But I will say, its quieter than I remember,” he added, before leaving the podium.

Appalachian State head coach Dowell Loggains didn’t take kindly to the jab.

“He sure does talk a lot for someone who hasn’t won jack yet,” Loggains quipped when told of Vaughn’s remarks.

With a budding rivalry rekindled and plenty of soundbites to go around, one thing is certain: Coastal Carolina is gaining traction in the Sun Belt. And after Saturday the Chanticleers moved one step closer to ensuring the road to the title runs through Conway.

Barber had his best game through the air of the season, finishing with 316 passing yards and three total touchdowns.

AJ Swann completed 75% of his passes on the day, but outside of the two touchdown drives his stats came up empty in the 24-17 loss.

This red zone interception was the 1st of many miscues for the Chants in the 2nd half as Appalachian State chipped away at the halftime lead.
