I really can't stand Jessica. I know she got a shit hand (that she lowkey dealt herself, but oh well), but damn.

Stefan about to muddy the waters, huh?

A Cold Day in Hell - Episode 16
Stefan stared at the microwave timer, watching the seconds tick down as the container of lobster risotto rotated inside. The microwave hummed steadily, filling the silence of Keshawn's empty home. Stefan leaned against the marble countertop, taking in the space around him. Everything in sight screamed money—the brushed steel appliances, the Italian leather furniture visible in the living room, the fucking wine fridge built into the island that was stocked with bottles Stefan couldn't pronounce the names of and that Keshawn wasn’t legally old enough to drink.

Last night after the game, they'd gone to some steakhouse downtown. Nothing crazy, just dinner with the two of them, ignoring the elephant in the room. But the way the hostess had lit up when she saw Keshawn, rushing to seat them at the best table in the house. The way the chef had come out personally to check on their meal. The way other diners had pretended not to stare.

Stefan pushed himself off the counter and walked to the living room window, peering out at the view of Portland. Somewhere out there, Keshawn was at practice, probably running drills with his teammates, getting ready for tomorrow's game. Getting ready to drop another twenty points, grab another ten boards, make another SportsCenter highlight.

Meanwhile, Stefan was here, heating up Keshawn's leftovers in Keshawn's house.

He wandered back to the kitchen, opening the fridge and staring at its contents. Everything neatly organized—meal prep containers labeled with days of the week, protein shakes, organic vegetables. Aren’t all vegetables organic? No, these ones were different. Everything here was different.

It wasn’t that long that they'd been equals—both UCLA Bruins, both with NBA dreams. Now Keshawn was living it, and Stefan was... what? A cautionary tale? The friend who fucked up?

The memory of Alexis in the backseat of his car flashed through his mind. He pushed it away, the same way he pushed away all thoughts of her. If he let himself think about her, really think about her, he might never stop.

The microwave beeped loudly, startling Stefan out of his thoughts. He blinked, momentarily disoriented as he was yanked back to the present—standing in Keshawn's kitchen, about to eat Keshawn's food.

Stefan opened the microwave door, the steam from the risotto hitting his face. He grabbed a fork from the drawer and sat down at the island, alone with his food and his thoughts, a guest in the life he should have had.

Angela closed her textbook, the words swimming on the page as irritating chatter drifted from the living room. The chaotic energy of Paige's latest 'boyfriend' was startlingly loud, magnified by the thin walls of their off-campus apartment. The last thing Angela needed was to listen to another round of drunken antics.

She pushed her chair back, the legs scraping against the hardwood floor, cutting through the noise. It was a familiar frustration—this tug-of-war between her need for quiet solitude and Paige's party-loving spirit. Angela grabbed her things, shoving her notebook into her backpack with more force than necessary. The library was nearly quiet at this hour; it would be a refuge.

As she stepped into the hallway, her phone buzzed persistently in her pocket. She pulled it out to see a message from Ronnie.

Don’t think I forgot, you still owe me! Kristi really wants to meet you!

She paused, the idea of being out among people tempting yet daunting. A part of her longed for the escape, for the laughter and the unstructured energy that came with gatherings like Ronnie’s. Maybe this would be a chance to loosen up, just for a while. But the quiet of the library beckoned her more strongly than the party call. She scoffed, typing back a quick response.

I really can’t tonight. I have a lot of work to catch up on.

Before she could hit send, another message from Ronnie popped in, playful and familiar.

Think of it as a study break. Scientists say the human mind can only concentrate for so long before its diminishing returns

She bit her lip, contemplating what Ronnie was saying, feeling the gears in her mind turning. Maybe it was time to balance out the grind. Maybe spending a few hours with friends, with Ronnie, would help her recharge in a way she desperately needed.

Keshawn swung the locker room door open, the echoes of the crowd still ringing in his ears. His fingers tingled with adrenaline, thrilled from the high of the game—his first start, his name echoing over the loudspeakers, the feel of the court beneath his feet. He spotted Stefan waiting by the entrance, leaning casually against the wall, arms crossed, an easy smirk plastered on his face.

“Yo, what’s good?” Keshawn greeted, clapping Stefan on the shoulder.

“You a lock for twenty, my nigga!” Stefan grinned, "I might need to start putting you on my slips!"

Keshawn shook his head, "Don’t get me caught up now."

“I’m just fucking with you,” Stefan said, but Keshawn could feel that itch beneath the excitement—the familiar tension in Stefan's voice. He knew the vibe too well; the longing underneath the bravado.

“Actually, you mind driving my car back?” Keshawn said, fumbling with his keys, forcing a shift in the conversation. "Stepping out for a little bit."

“Shit, where we going?"” Stefan's brow raised, curiosity piqued.

“Not that kind of hangout,” Keshawn replied as he tried to hide his smile, "Just chilling with somebody."

As they approached the sleek black SUV idling nearby, Stefan glanced through the tinted windows, then paused, a look of realization dawning on his face. “Is that who I think it is?"

"Relax," Keshawn smiled as Candace threw him a playful wave from the backseat of the car, legs crossed as she was scrolling through her phone.

“Damn, Keshawn. You really living the life, huh?” Stefan chuckled, shaking his head in a mix of admiration and something else—something Keshawn didn’t want to name.

"It’s alright,” Keshawn said, his stony facade beginning to crack. "You good with driving?"

“Yeah, for sure,” Stefan replied, his voice less assured as he stepped back, shoving his hands deep into his pockets, masking the underlying tension.

“Alright, I’ll see you at the crib,” Keshawn called out, giving Stefan a light dap as he slid into the passenger seat next to Candace.

They shared an embrace and a light kiss as the car engine rumbled to life, pulling away from the lot. Keshawn glanced back at the arena, a fleeting moment of doubt creeping in. He saw Stefan standing there, framed in the headlights, his figure dwarfed by the glowing building behind him. Keshawn’s chest tightened, and he couldn't shake the feeling of leaving something behind; that familiar ache of nostalgia tugged at him.

Angela leaned back against the cool metal railing of the balcony, her laughter mingling with the distant music that thumped through the apartment walls. It was one of those nights where the air seemed to carry everyone’s joy—bodies pressed close together, animated conversations tangled with shouts and bursts of laughter. She had given in, much to Ronnie's delight, letting her hair down and momentarily forgetting the endless work that loomed over her. The crisp evening air swirled around her, a sharp contrast to the warmth of the packed room behind her.

As she leaned out, she took a deep breath, the reminder of autumn’s chill igniting a spark of clarity in her hazy mind. She closed her eyes, allowing herself the tiniest of moments to relish being young and carefree, or at least pretending to be. But as she opened them again, a sight caught her attention—an older woman, burdened with grocery bags, struggling to get through the front door of the building across the street.

Without thinking, Angela turned on her heel and hurried down the steps. The energetic chatter of the party faded behind her as she reached the street, her heartbeat quickening not just from the brisk air, but from a sudden rush of responsibility, urging her forward.

“Hey, let me help you with that!” she called out, her voice slicing through the cool evening air. The woman looked up, surprise broadening her features.

“Oh, thank you, honey,” she replied, her voice laced with relief. Angela rushed over, taking a couple of the bags from her.

“I’ve got it,” Angela assured, peering into the woman’s eyes.

Together, they maneuvered inside the small entrance of the building. The house wasn’t much but it was a home; toys scattered around the living room, shoes lined up against the wall near the entrance. The kitchen was cluttered with takeout boxes, unopened Ramen Noodle cups and a single pot was on the stove. As the woman set down her bags, she turned back with a grateful smile.

“I really appreciate you,” she said, her voice warm.

“It's no problem at all,” Angela replied, throat tight. She didn’t want to linger, didn’t want the heaviness of nostalgia to wrap around her like a shroud. She offered a final smile before stepping back into the night, a cocktail of emotions swirling within. The laughter from the party felt muted now; the vibrant night dimmed as she walked away.

Was this what she needed? She wouldn’t be the first girl with a boyfriend that was somebody else’s baby daddy. A one-bedroom apartment to complain about being too small? The crying of a baby that wasn’t hers? The trauma and the drama that would likely follow as Vic would try to navigate being a co-parent while she dealt with sharing her boyfriend with another family? Yeah, it’d be messy but it’d be something. Something more than studying, exams and slide decks. Something more than a degree and a paycheck. Something real, something both tangible and intangible.

Don't love how easily Keshawn let Stefan back into his inner circle. Seems as though he still has some maturing to do.

Angela still pining for Vic is nasty work.

That's still the bro. Would be hard to turn him down at your literal door.

And leave him in your home alone to eat your food? To drive your car? After he's been popping off back at school? Keshawn's judgement of character has been proven to be misguided at best.
