we've got a few guys with solid dev traits - so long as they don't leave and we can get a few solid guys on the trail we can start to build. Definitely going to be a sharper learning curve that last years game it feels like

Charlottesville, VA. - The Kade Vaughn era at Coastal Carolina kicked off with flashes of promise, but ultimately the Chanticleers couldn’t overcome a rough first half as Virginia pulled away for a 35–17 win Saturday night at Scott Stadium.

For Vaughn, the loss was both expected and revealing.

“There’s no sugarcoating it — we got waxed,” the first-year head coach said bluntly after the game. “But every snap is a teaching moment. Wins or losses, you learn.”

Virginia jumped out early, turning a tight opening quarter into a 21–0 halftime lead while holding Coastal to just 77 total yards. Cavaliers QB Chandler Morris outgained the entire Chanticleers offense in the first half, including a 48-yard strike to Trell Harris after a fumble by Coastal RB Jalen John set up a short field.

But despite the deficit, Vaughn found silver linings.

“They went into the locker room down three scores and came out swinging. Nearly 200 yards of offense in the second half, a turnover forced, and we held them to 120 yards outside of their last drive. That’s something to build on.”

Coastal’s opening drive offered a glimpse of what could’ve been. Facing 3rd-and-1, RB Ja’Vin Simpkins broke free for a 23-yard gain — only for a holding flag to wipe it out. It was the first of four first downs negated by penalties on the night, including a third-quarter touchdown that would’ve capped a promising drive.

“Frustrating,” Vaughn said when pressed on the offensive line miscues. “For a group that’s watched more film in two weeks than they did all of last year? I expect better.”

After a defensive stop, Coastal marched again behind Emmett Brown’s mobility and John’s burst, but a hit at the line jarred the ball loose from John. Two plays later, Morris went over the top for Harris’s opening touchdown.

By halftime, the Chanticleers found themselves down 21–0, their early momentum buried under penalties and Virginia’s big-play passing game.

The Chanticleers regrouped at the break, with Brown later revealing Vaughn’s halftime message: “We owned the first half mistakes, then it was sleeves up and whiteboards out. We schemed, we adjusted, and we fought.”

Coastal finally broke through after a three-and-out by Virginia to open the third. Brown hit John on a 15-yard screen, then Simpkins weaved for 18 more. A third-down strike to Simpkins seemed to go for a touchdown, but another holding call forced Coastal to settle for a field goal — the first official points of the Vaughn era.

Virginia answered quickly as Harrison Waylee struck to push the lead to 28–3, but Coastal kept swinging. Brown connected with veteran WR Jameson Tucker on a 71-yard go route to finally loosen up Virginia’s secondary. The next Cavalier drive ended when DT Darrion Henry-Young ripped the ball free from Morris, setting up Brown’s sharp 5-of-6 passing stretch that moved Coastal to the goal line.

Simpkins finished what he started with a 1-yard score, pulling Coastal within 11.

“It was a questionable spot on the previous play,” Vaughn said of Simpkins being marked short. “I felt like he earned another shot.”

Virginia iced it late with a pair of deep shots to Dakota Twitty, scoring with 24 seconds left to stretch the final margin.

“I don’t think you’ll hear Coach Vaughn call this a moral victory — or any of the Chants for that matter,” said Layne Harris on the Chanticleers Sports Radio Network. “But I’ll say it for them. This team showed a fight we didn’t see at times last year, and I chalk that up to Vaughn. If this is our worst loss of the season, we’re in for a ride.”

Coastal returns home next Saturday for Vaughn’s Brooks Stadium debut against D-II rival Charleston Southern.

Ahh Jalen John! Throwback to my UMass dynasty of yesteryear!

How bad is MJ Morris that he isn’t starting for you?

Tough opening loss, just not enough horses yet.
Is your QBs nickname Doc?
Hopefully a nice bounce back W against FCS next game :bacon:

All the action came in the 4th. Had y'all hit the board early, might've been a different game. Or... Might've not

He's a stud :blessed:

Morris is actually rated decently, but only 78 speed and with this team I felt someone who was more mobile would be better. Brown has the best wheels of the QBs and the best accuracy numbers, but Morris has the strongest arm. If Brown struggles Morris is the next man up :yep:

He doesn't get any nicknames until we win some games. The loss to UVA was expected, but frustrating, but if we can't get by FCS?

The 4th was definitely encouraging - although giving up the late score was deflating. Road games feel like the momentum is going to be a lot harder to get back this year. We were driving before John's fumble in the 1st quarter and after that we couldn't do anything
