Hometown Hero returns: Penguins add goaltender John Gibson, Trevor Zegras pre-Trade Deadline

GM Dubas, Penguins decide to sell-high on league's top goaltender in Tristan Jarry

MONTREAL, QC -- - The Pittsburgh Penguins have completed a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, acquiring goaltender John Gibson and forward Trevor Zegras from the Anaheim Ducks. Going the other way is goaltender Tristan Jarry and forwards Danton Heinen and Kevin Hayes. The deal sees the Penguins add one of the most sought after goalies ahead of the trade deadline, as well as a disgruntled forward who was in desperate need of a change in scenery.

This season in 31 games played, Gibson has limped to a 10-win, .905 save percentage season while sporting a 3.51 goals against average. He has struggled to find his game behind an anemic Ducks' defense that is allowing the most goals scored against in the NHL. Gibson has previously backed some solid Ducks teams after being drafted 39th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. At the age of 31, Gibson will be looking to get his career back on track behind one of the most offensively potent offenses in the league.

Gibson also has three years left on his contract that will pay him $6.485 million dollars a season with a modified no-trade clause. Gibson had to provide Anaheim a list of teams he would be willing to go to, with his hometown Penguins - which he has often credited his love of hockey to - one of his primary choices.

Zegras, 23, has seen his light with the Ducks go out overnight. Seeing his role slowly replaced by the likes of Leo Carlsson and Mason McTavish, Zegras requested a trade from the Ducks after struggling to find his role on the team. In 59 games played this year, he has scored a lowly six goals and 21 assists for 27 points total - a far cry from his 23-goal, 65-point performance back in the 2022/23 season two years ago.

After being drafted ninth overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Zegras is signed for two more seasons with a cap hit of $5.75 million. The Penguins shed some necessary cap in both Heinen and Hayes but will have to do some major work in the off-season with the big additions of Gibson, Zegras, and the previously-acquired Brock Boeser, who was acquired a few days ago.

Statistically, yes. But I think his stats are inflated due to how well we're playing right now. I like Gibson better long-term and having Jarry doesn't fit our long-term plans. Gibson is better in the game, and I like the idea of his contract being more manageable past this season.

Yeah its been an adjustment period with the trades coming in and we've had small injuries to the point where we haven't put together our expected playoff lineup yet. Plus, playing a slew of tough teams hasn't helped.
