Rich get richer: Pens add forward Brock Boeser from Canucks ahead of trade deadline
Pittsburgh manages to improve their already stocked top six with the acquisition of Boeser
MONTREAL, QC -- - The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Brock Boeser from the Vancouver Canucks in a trade, announced wearly Tuesday morning. Going the other way is defenseman Ryan Graves, minor league forward Matt Nieto, and a third-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.
The Penguins are one of the top teams in the NHL, currently in first place in the Eastern Conference and only behind the Colorado Avalanche in the race for the Presidents' Trophy as the league's best regular season team. Looking for more firepower ahead of the trade deadline for a push to the playoffs, the team decided to add Boeser.
Boeser, 28, was drafted 23rd overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Canucks and has been with the team ever since. He's coming off a career-best 2023-24 season where he scored 40 goals and 73 points in 81 games for the team. This season thus far, he's only scored 15 goals and 38 points while sporting a -5 plus/minus rating for a Vancouver team that is battling to get to .500 on the season, currently sitting outside of a playoff position.
Boeser is currently in the last year of a seven-year contract he signed with the Canucks, with an salary cap hit of $6.65 million. The Penguins will have to see if an extension is in the cards financially.
The Pens deal Graves, one of their leading scorers from their defense. He currently has five goals and 24 assists for 29 points through 59 games, already racing ahead of his 26-point career-best he achieved in the 2019-20 season with the Colorado Avalanche. With the burgeoning Owen Pickering looking for a permanent spot in the NHL, the Pens made Graves expendable.
The Canucks have been in the spotlight due to their seemingly imploding nucleus of core roster players. Due to a reported "rift" between superstar Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller, the latter was dealt to the New York Rangers. This comes a year after trading former captain Bo Horvat to the New York Islanders. It seems as though the Canucks are heading for a retool phase, now deciding to trade Boeser to the Penguins. This deal has been in the works for years, but due to the management shift where Kyle Dubas took over as General Manager.
Boeser is expected to suit up for the Penguins in their Thursday matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers, lining up with team captain Sidney Crosby and winger Sam Poulin.
The team is in rumours to not be done with trades with the deadline looming just ahead on March 8th.
