Conway, SC. - After a stunning 39-38 loss to West Virginia the week prior, Coastal Carolina returned to Brooks Stadium looking to shake off the stench of defeat. For a moment, though, it felt like the odor followed them home.

Nick Golladay opened the day with command, orchestrating an 11-play march capped by a six-yard touchdown strike to Kamryn Petty. But NC State answered in a flash. Freshman quarterback Kona Quick read the RPO perfectly and found Darryl Jolly streaking between zone defenders. One cut and 87 yards later, the Wolfpack had silenced the teal-clad crowd. A smattering of boos rang out, frustration boiling over from a fanbase tired of watching its secondary get torched.

“We heard it,” admitted senior linebacker Walt Reyna.

Coastal’s defense, though, stiffened after that opening haymaker. While the Wolfpack would ultimately post 19 points in a 51-19 defeat, they were forced to earn every inch. After that first lightning strike, NC State managed just 77 more yards in the half as the Chants sat back in deep zone, daring Quick to dink and dunk. When James Ruggins stripped him late in the second quarter, Evan Hemphill scooped it for six. Even with the bizarre twist of a blocked extra point returned the other way, Coastal stormed into halftime with a commanding 34-9 lead.

NC State struck once more after the break, punching in a quick touchdown and later adding a long field goal, but the Wolfpack never mounted a serious threat again. Vaughn wasn’t in the mood to celebrate.

“I’m not going to get too rah-rah up here,” the head coach said flatly. “Lately anytime I praise the defense, we shit the bed the next week. They’re going to have to do more than hold a 3-7 team to 326 yards to earn some praise at this point.”

If the defense was finding its footing, Golladay had the offense cruising. The senior quarterback accounted for five total touchdowns, showing no hesitation even with star tailback Sidney Barkow limited by the rib injury that already cost him six games.

Floyd Priest shouldered the load with 90 yards and a score, while Petty and Terrance Rugamba each exploded for 100-yard efforts with touchdowns of their own.

Coastal hopes the balance carries forward as the Chants hit the road to face the struggling Pittsburgh Panthers (1-9), looking to string together momentum in the season’s final stretch.

Once Evan Hemphill rumbled in with this fumble for a touchdown, it felt like the Chanticleers had a comfortable lead going into the break.

NC State lucked into a blocked XP right after the defensive touchdown, taking two defensive points of their own in a rarely seen play.

Pittsburgh, PA. - At a rain-soaked Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Coastal Carolina opened with a familiar nightmare. For the second straight game, the first play from scrimmage went for a touchdown — only this time, it came on special teams. Pitt’s Ralph Kashama took the opening kickoff 96 yards to the house, setting the tone for what quickly became a sloppy, turnover-heavy first half.

Both sides coughed it up three times as the wet conditions made throwing a gamble and ball security an adventure. Locked in a 14–14 tie with seconds left in the half, QB Nick Golladay shook off his three early turnovers to engineer a last-ditch drive. A clutch 27-yard strike to Percy LaRue on third-and-long set the stage, and with seven seconds left, head coach Kade Vaughn pushed his chips in.

“It just felt like we needed a play there to take into the half — and a field goal wasn’t it,” Vaughn said. His gamble paid off, as Terrance Rugamba created just enough separation on a corner route to snag a 23-yard touchdown with a single second left on the clock.

From there, it was all Coastal. The Chanticleers outscored the Panthers 28–3 the rest of the way, bottling up a Pitt rushing attack that managed 86 of its 94 yards before halftime. Forced to throw, QB Spencer Pounds avoided more interceptions after tossing two in the first half, but he never found the end zone — and didn’t even finish the game.

Looking for a spark, Pitt turned to the wildcat, then dialed up a halfback pass to Pounds split out wide. Instead, he got leveled by MLB Walt Reyna, leaving the game for good in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, Golladay settled in, finding Kamryn Petty for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, while RB Floyd Priest churned out 127 yards on the ground. RB Sid Barkow exited again with rib trouble, but Coastal’s offense didn’t miss a beat.

“With a late bye week to get healthy, it couldn’t come at a better time,” Vaughn said afterward. “Sid can rest up and be ready for senior night back on The Teal — and hopefully, a playoff berth.”

As for the ACC Championship race, Vaughn kept it blunt. “We’re behind Clemson, who has the tiebreaker, and Miami, who’s undefeated in league play with one game left. Unless Clemson drops their last two, we’re out. There’s still a chance, but our focus is on sending the seniors out the right way in two weeks.”

Image
As sopping wet fans were still finding their seats, Robert Kashama was creating magic as he hit the corner and left the Coastal special teams in the dust on the opening kickoff.

Kamryn Petty put the Pitt Panthers away for good with a pair of 30 yard touchdowns in the 3rd Q.

A sloppy 1st half plague the Chanticleers as Golladay lost the ball on this strip sack while throwing a pair of interceptions.
