they were ranked 10th to start the season and have an 89 overall roster, but their starting QB went down early and they never recovered

Chanticleers Ride Dominant 2nd Half To Blowout Win

Image
Once the Chanticleers started getting home on Rich Belin, that was all she wrote. Aside from a long 70 yard touchdown the Aggies were completely stonewall in a dominant 2nd half for Coastal.

College Station, TX. - Coming off their third loss of the season in Tuscaloosa — and after a week where head coach Kade Vaughn very publicly ripped into his defense — all eyes were on the Chanticleers as they stepped onto Kyle Field to face a talented but underachieving Texas A&M team.

The Aggies entered 2029 with championship aspirations, but a carousel of injuries at quarterback left them limping to a 2-8 record. Even so, with the defending champs in town, the 12th Man roared to life.

Coastal struck first, scoring on its opening two drives to quiet the stadium, but A&M flipped the script in a hurry. Nathan Davis slipped behind the secondary for an 84-yard touchdown, the crowd exploded, and linebacker Nick Rivera took over from there. Rivera intercepted Mason Kelsay twice in the red zone — killing Coastal scoring chances — and the Aggies rattled off 17 unanswered points to carry a 17-14 lead into halftime.

It was another shaky opening act for a Chanticleers defense that gave up 249 passing yards and two scores to A&M’s third-string quarterback in the first half alone.

Then came the reset. Middle linebacker Walt Reyna, the heartbeat of the unit, jump-started the turnaround with a 1st-down sack on the Aggies’ opening drive of the third quarter. From that moment, the floodgates opened. Coastal racked up seven sacks and two interceptions after halftime, holding A&M to just 120 total yards the rest of the way. Seventy of those came on one busted coverage that went the distance — otherwise, the defense looked every bit like champions again.

“We know we can play like this for four quarters, it’s in us,” Reyna said afterward. “We just have to put it together — and that starts with my leadership.”

On the other side of the ball, Kelsay kept things steady after his early miscues. Instead of forcing passes, he leaned on short-yardage runs and took advantage of the turnovers Reyna and company provided. The senior quarterback found the endzone on three second-half scoring drives that put the game out of reach and silenced any upset hopes in College Station.

The Chanticleers return home next week for Senior Night against rival Liberty (8-3), needing a win to keep their College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Image
It looked like another rough day was coming after Nathan Davis broke free for an 80 yard touchdown strike in the 1st quarter.

Image
Sidney Barkow had a steady day, but this 57 yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter was easily the play of the game that sparked the dominant 2nd half.

Conway, SC. - They say you can’t call it a rivalry until both sides notch a win — and as long as Kade Vaughn has patrolled the sidelines, the Liberty Flames have been nothing but extinguished. In a season defined by defensive inconsistency, Coastal Carolina closed out the 2029 campaign with one of its most complete efforts, a 70-10 demolition on Senior Night that sends the defending champs into the postseason with renewed confidence.

“This is the type of game we needed as a secondary, just to validate the work we’ve been putting in all year,” said redshirt freshman Xavier Montague, whose interception on Boogie Choice’s first pass set the tone for the blowout. “We’ve had our share of struggles, but it’s not how you start — it’s how you finish.”

The finish was emphatic. Mason Kelsay carved Liberty apart with five touchdown passes before the midway point of the second quarter, giving Coastal all the cushion it could possibly need. The early fireworks also gave Vaughn the chance to script a rare moment — getting all three senior quarterbacks snaps in their final game on The Teal.

“It was the plan to get all three of them some reps,” Vaughn confirmed. “They deserved it. Both Neal [Kennedy] and Carter [Smith] entered the season expecting to be QB1. They didn’t get that, but they’ve been nothing but professional and selfless all year. I was honored to get them some time in the sun.”

Both Kennedy and Smith delivered, tossing a touchdown apiece before the torch was passed to redshirt freshman Andre Koloamatangi, who many expect to be in the QB battle again next year. Koloamatangi added his own score in extended duty, capping a night where everything went Coastal’s way.

By the final whistle, the Chanticleers had piled up 717 yards of total offense while holding Liberty to just 10 points, a performance as cathartic as it was dominant.

Now, Coastal waits. With no conference championship game as an independent, the Chanticleers can only watch the chaos of Championship Weekend unfold and hope the playoff committee views their résumé as strong enough for a return trip to the College Football Playoff.

Image
First pass of the day for Boogie Choice sailed high and right into the waiting hands of Xavier Montague to set the tone from the jump.

Image
Coastal followed up the 1st drive INT with a pair of sacks and then another INT as Choice's day started off bad and never got better.

Image
Percy LaRue showing off the hands late in the 4th Q. LaRue is expected to take the graduating Trishtin Glass' role as TE1 next year with high expectations.

Jeremy Hurley Becomes 2nd Duck To Earn Heisman

Image

For only the second time in program history, an Oregon Duck has captured the prestigious Heisman Trophy. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Jeremy Hurley edged Coastal Carolina’s Sidney Barkow and Louisville’s Bryce Baker to claim college football’s highest individual honor.

Hurley announced himself in Week 1 with a 453-yard, three-touchdown demolition of Division II Western Oregon, and never looked back. Operating Lane Kiffin’s wide-open offense with surgical precision, Hurley shredded defenses through the air and on the ground, finishing the season with 50 total touchdowns and a string of highlight-reel performances.

Barkow’s monster season kept the race tight down the stretch, but without a conference championship game to bolster his résumé, the Coastal Carolina star couldn’t close the gap. Hurley’s Heisman moment came in the Pac-12 Championship, where he avenged Oregon’s lone blemish — a 27-23 loss to rival Washington in Week 11 — by rolling up 325 total yards and five scores in a 38-24 title victory.

Now, Hurley will try to take Oregon somewhere it has never been: all the way to a national championship. Marcus Mariota, the only other Duck to win the Heisman, fell just short in 2014 against Ohio State.

While Hurley joined the pantheon of Oregon legends, Coastal Carolina linebacker Walt Reyna carved out history of his own. The heart of the Chanticleers’ defense became the first player ever to win both the Chuck Bednarik and Bronko Nagurski awards three times, sweeping the honors as a freshman, sophomore, and now junior.

“Got to try and make it 4-for-4, set the bar really out of reach,” Reyna joked on X after the ceremony, hinting that he already plans on returning to Conway for his senior season.

The Road to Miami

Image

With Championship Weekend in the books, all eyes turned to the CFP Committee as college football braced for the final bracket reveal. Eleven spots were secure. The only drama came at No. 12.

Arizona State entered the Big 12 title game in prime position, but stumbled against SMU. The Mustangs not only claimed the league crown, but also snatched the final playoff bid, jumping into the 12-seed and leaving the Sun Devils on the outside looking in.

“If you’re Arizona State, you have no one to be mad at but yourself,” said Nick Saban on ESPN’s coverage. “You knew the stakes, and you came up short.”

The 1st round sets up some heavyweight clashes. Perhaps the most intriguing comes in Eugene, where Ohio State will square off against Oregon. The Buckeyes, once seen as playoff locks, dropped back-to-back heartbreakers to Michigan — first in The Game, then again in the Big Ten Championship. Their “reward”? Facing the nation’s hottest quarterback, 2029 Heisman winner Jeremy Hurley, fresh off a five-touchdown performance in the Pac-12 title game. The winner heads to the Cotton Bowl against No. 1 Louisville.

Washington, stung by its Pac-12 Championship loss, gets no respite. The Huskies will head east to Conway to face No. 7 Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers already beat Washington 35-21 earlier this season and will try to repeat the feat with a berth in the Orange Bowl opposite No. 2 Georgia at stake.

Clemson, last year’s runner-up, draws No. 6 Notre Dame in what promises to be a bruising defensive battle. The prize for the victor? A Peach Bowl showdown with Big Ten Champion Michigan.

And then there’s SMU. Riding high after their Big 12 title, the Mustangs now head to Lincoln to take on the No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Survive that, and a date with Alabama looms in the Fiesta Bowl.

The stage is officially set. Now the chase to Miami begins.
