Tampa Bay, FL. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers spent the season running down giants from the Pac-12 to the SEC, mounting every trophy on the wall along the way. But in the National Championship, the last hurdle wasn’t Clemson. It was themselves.

Bryce Underwood, the two-time Heisman winner, turned in the sloppiest performance of his career, accounting for seven turnovers. Yet somehow, Coastal never broke. Every time Clemson looked ready to deliver the knockout punch, the Chanticleers clawed back into striking distance, leaning on a defense that bent but refused to break.

By halftime, it was almost unthinkable. Underwood had coughed the ball up four times — two interceptions and two fumbles — while Clemson played mistake-free football. And still, the Tigers led only 17-14.

“To think the Heisman winner would have four turnovers in a half and the other team had none?” marveled Kirk Herbstreit on the ESPN broadcast. “You’d assume this game’s already over,” added Chris Fowler.

Instead, Coastal’s defensive front rocked Clemson QB Chris Denson with four first-half sacks, keeping the Tigers’ offense stuck in neutral. When Dareon Doctson juked Clemson corner Tony Cabrall out of his shoes on a 29-yard touchdown to start the second half, it felt like the tide had turned.

But then Groundhog Day set in. Underwood threw his third interception. He lost his third fumble, then a fourth. Clemson capitalized at last, Jeff Overton streaking 35 yards on a screen to put the Tigers back in front. Then Denson himself scrambled for a touchdown, mocking Underwood’s ball security by cradling the ball with both hands in front of the cameras. Clemson led 31-21 with under eight minutes to play.

That’s when Kade Vaughn grabbed his quarterback by the shoulder pads and delivered one message: “Four quarters.”

The Chants responded immediately. Doctson ripped off runs of 21 and 23 yards on a quick-strike drive to trim the deficit back to three. Vaughn turned to his defense: “Four quarters. Nobody’s beaten us for four yet — you really gonna let tonight be the first?”

The answer was no. DT David Stone buried Denson for a sack on third down to force a punt, and Underwood got one last shot. Starting at his own 24 with 3:52 to play, Coastal’s Heisman leader marched his team down the field before delivering the final blow. Doctson gashed Clemson again, and on 3rd-and-goal from the three, Underwood checked into a slant at the line. This time, no fumble, no miscue — just a frozen rope, with pressure barring down, to George Rabe for the go-ahead score.

Clemson had one last chance, but backup safety Nick Rudd-Johnson, filling in for the injured Gage Drummond, came screaming on a blitz and drilled Denson. Flustered, the Tigers rushed to the line. Miscommunication followed — receiver Charles Waddy broke inside while Denson threw outside. Only Josiah Persinger was there, snatching the interception that sealed Coastal Carolina’s first National Championship.

“You can’t speak enough about the fight of this team, top to bottom,” Vaughn gushed on the podium. “Most coaches, you tell ’em seven turnovers and they ask how much they lost by. Not us. Grind don’t stop.”

Then came one final twist. As ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit pointed out on stage, Underwood’s game-winning pass wasn’t just for the title — it was the 156th of his career, breaking Case Keenum’s all-time NCAA record.

“One throw, two pieces of history,” Herbstreit said with a grin. “A national championship, and the most touchdown passes in college football history. That’s one hell of a final throw.”

The Chanticleers basked in the glow of an unprecedented National Championship, their first in program history, with confetti swirling and the teal faithful roaring in Tampa Bay. But as the echoes fade and the trophies settle into their cases, reality will come calling. The grind of college football never truly stops. With Bryce Underwood and a host of other impact seniors set to graduate, one question now looms over Conway:

Is this the dawn of a Teal Dynasty? Or just a brilliant, fleeting footnote in the history of the sport?

Somehow Jeff Overton spun out of this, hurdled the defender, and sprinted 81 yards for a touchdown.

"TOUCH GRASS" the Coastal sideline yelled as Doctson juked his way to a 29 yard TD.

Stone-walled.

A throw for the ages - the go-ahead TD in the National Championship and the record breaking 156th of his career.

Josiah Persinger was the only home on the final throw of the season for Chris Denson.

That’s a crazy game. I was going to say the only way you could lose is by hurting yourself but even that wasn’t enough. Finally getting that big W.

We tried our best :rip: The defense played lights out and outside of a few big plays - and the flukey touchdown - they kept us in it :yep:
