South Bend, IN. - It wasn’t the fireworks show Coastal Carolina lit up in Miami a week ago, but in a chilly South Bend the Chanticleers proved they could win ugly, grinding out a 28-20 victory over No. 14 Notre Dame to remain unbeaten.

“This isn’t a game they win last year — point blank,” Jesse Palmer said on ESPN’s “Game of the Week.” “Bryce Underwood took five sacks tonight, but instead of collapsing, this Coastal team regrouped. They schemed runs, shifted motion, leaned on their backs, and found ways to get Bryce back in rhythm. That’s the difference.”

It was a nightmare start for Coastal. Their first two drives stalled on failed fourth-down conversions, both in Irish territory, and Notre Dame made them pay with 10 quick points. As halftime approached Alex Dragos slipped through tackles for a 27-yard touchdown run, Coastal trailed 20-7 and looked wobbly.

But with seconds left before the half, Kade Vaughn rolled the dice. Out of timeouts and facing 3rd-and-long, Underwood dropped a swing pass to Michael Allen, who caught the Irish defense flat-footed. Allen turned it upfield and raced 55 yards to the end zone with just two ticks on the clock. Instead of staring at disaster, Coastal hit the locker room only down 20-14.

From there, the adjustments came fast. Defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson stacked the box, daring Dragos to beat them through the air. Notre Dame’s rushing attack, which gashed Coastal for 138 yards in the first half, managed just 40 the rest of the way.

The Irish still had chances. With a one-point lead late in the third, kicker Sal Aquino doinked a short field goal off the left upright. Coastal pounced, driving 10 plays and taking the lead on Jalen Likely’s bruising three-yard score.

Then it was Bryce Underwood’s turn to slam the door. On a designed roll, “Big Game Bryce” cut right, turned the corner, and sprinted 33 yards for the knockout blow, finishing the run with a bow toward the Notre Dame sideline.

Notre Dame pushed back, marching 13 plays to set up 1st-and-goal from the five with under three minutes left. But Thorpe winner Jo’Ziah Edmond swatted down Alex Dragos’ fourth-down throw to end the threat. Coastal milked the final two minutes and left South Bend with another trophy for the wall.

“MOUNT ’EM!” the players shouted in the locker room, another plaque ready for the Trophy Wall.

The Chanticleers (7-0) head back to Conway next week for another test — this one against Vaughn’s old employer, North Carolina.

Notre Dame rocked Underwood throughout the contest - but it wasn't enough to keep the reigning Heisman winner down.

Bomani Jones: All right y’all, joining me today — I’m still kinda wrapping my head around this — the head coach of Coastal Carolina, number three in the country, undefeated, knocking off Miami, Notre Dame, and probably a couple of IRS auditors along the way, my man Coach Kade Vaughn. Coach, what’s going on?

Kade Vaughn: (laughs) What’s good, Bomani. Happy to be here, man. Y’all been talking about me, now I get to come up and talk back.

Bomani: Yeah, yeah — and speaking of talking back, let’s start with this wall. Every time y’all win, I see it all over the internet. You got mascots’ heads mounted like you’re out here hunting elk in Montana. Who came up with this, and why is it not your athletic director’s fault?

Vaughn: (laughs) Oh no, that one’s all me. Look, one of my boys went on safari last year, came back with a leopard head. I’m telling you, it was the most badass thing I’d ever seen. I’m sitting there one night, looking at schedules, looking at who we wanna chase — and in my head I see a wolverine head mounted on the wall. Called up Facilities right then.

Bomani: Wait, wait — Facilities? Not the AD?

Vaughn: (grins) Nah, Chance found out when the players did. He wasn’t too happy about it at first, let me tell you. But when he saw the vibe? How the guys responded to the idea of literally “hunting” wins? He couldn’t say no. It became this thing, like, tangible proof of the conquest. Every time you walk past it to put on pads, it’s there. Motivation in 3D.

Bomani: And see, here’s where I think it’s funny. You don’t want to see that Chanticleer up there, but I promise you, the other team don’t want to see their mascot up there either. You giving them bulletin board material, Coach.

Vaughn: I mean, maybe. But that’s not my concern. Look, you prepare the way we prepare, you execute the way we execute? Their head goes up. That’s the job. If that gives them motivation, so be it. I’ll still take my guys over anybody else in the country.

Bomani: Speaking of your guys, let’s talk South Bend. Man, Notre Dame had y’all dead to rights. You’re down double digits, Bryce getting sacked, it looked bad. And then, fourth quarter comes, y’all flip the switch. How you pull that off?

Vaughn: That’s Jeremiah Johnson. I call him my insurance policy. Two-time Broyles winner. He came into the locker room, looked around, said, “Enough. They’re not about to run for 200 on us.” Scrapped the plan right there. We loaded the box, dared the quarterback to beat us. And it worked. They couldn’t breathe on the ground, defense bought us time, and Bryce did what Bryce does.

Bomani: Yeah, because Bryce — I gotta say this — he looked cooked for three quarters. Then suddenly man’s running 33 yards for a touchdown, bowing at the Notre Dame sideline. How do you explain that?

Vaughn: Guts. Pure guts. Last year, he gets sacked like that, we probably fold. This year? He regroups. He trusts the scheme, trusts the guys, takes his lumps, then makes the play that matters. That’s growth. That’s culture.

Bomani: Speaking of Bryce — I can’t ignore this. Only one dude in history has won the Heisman twice. Archie Griffin. Bryce is in position. Is he actually thinking about it?

Vaughn: Look, anybody would want that. But you know what’s bigger than being the second two-time Heisman winner? Being the first dude to lead Coastal Carolina to a national championship. You do that? Your name lives forever. He knows that.

Bomani: Okay, fair. You might be right. But let’s pivot, because the people wanna know. This poker money thing. You’ve been quiet about it, but everybody knows the story — Coastal’s NIL fund supposedly bankrolled by your poker winnings. What’s the truth, Coach?

Vaughn: (smirks) Truth is, yeah, I put poker money into the collective. Why not? It’s disposable income. It’s me investing in my own program. But the NCAA spun it like I was walking out of a casino every Sunday with a briefcase of cash and handing it out Monday morning. Reality was, it’s spread out over years.

Bomani: So not Shohei-level stuff?

Vaughn: Not even close. Honestly, the NCAA trying to shut it down only made it bigger. Now you got poker pros pledging percentages of their winnings to the collective. That’s not what the NCAA thought they were starting.

Bomani: Oh no, that’s exactly what they thought they were starting — chaos. Now, speaking of chaos, your old quarterback, Roquan Smith — went on record saying you were betting on your own games. That’s not throwing you under the bus, that’s throwing you under a convoy. What’s your response?

Vaughn: (laughs) Look, Roquan… he’s gotta live with his choices. I vouched for him, kept him around when I thought he had that dog. But when the pressure hit? He folded. Saw other guys getting run in practice and knew his job was on the line. Instead of rising to it, he wilted. Then he transfers to Clemson and doesn’t even sniff the field. That says plenty. As for betting on my own games? Erroneous. NCAA cleared me. Haven’t touched a bet in two years, didn’t like the optics after Shohei. Simple as that.

Bomani: So basically, Roquan soft.

Vaughn: I ain’t say it, Bomani — but I didn’t not say it either.

Bomani: (laughs) Okay, last one before I let you go. This ACC thing. You get kicked out of the Sun Belt — which, by the way, wild — and now you’re knocking on the door of the ACC? How does that happen that fast?

Vaughn: Sun Belt blindsided us. We figured some sanctions, maybe a suspension. But full-on removal? Fine. I was tired of hanging 70 on people anyway. American wanted us, but that wasn’t really a step up. The ACC made sense — regional rivalries, real competition, money on the table. They tried to lowball us, we said no, we’ll go independent. Funny how fast things came together after that.

Bomani: So basically, keep winning, keep the money coming, you’re in?

Vaughn: Win your way in. Golden goose, gold feathers, and we’re hunting gold trophies.

Bomani: Coach, you sound like a madman — but you’re undefeated, so what do I know? Appreciate you joining us.

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers kept stacking heads on their trophy wall — but as Thanos once asked, what did it cost?

It was a bruising afternoon in Conway as HC Kade Vaughn watched four of his offensive stars — Bryce Underwood, Talyn Taylor, Dareon Doctson, and Jalen Likely — all miss time in the rivalry clash with North Carolina. Doctson and Likely never returned after halftime, while Underwood and Taylor gutted it out, though the Heisman winner was clearly a shell of himself after taking a shot to his plant leg.

“It’s late in the year. We’ve played a physical schedule — that’s it,” Vaughn said afterward, downplaying the attrition.

Early on, Underwood looked sharp, carving up the Tar Heels with a dazzling 17-of-20 start for 175 yards. But after briefly leaving the field with the leg contusion, he was never the same. The senior went just 10-of-21 the rest of the way, managing only 56 more yards and never once threatening to run.

“You can see it plain as day,” Coastal play-by-play voice Matt Hogue said on the broadcast. “He isn’t planting, isn’t driving through the throw. The ball’s floating, and he hasn’t even looked to scramble since that hit.”

North Carolina noticed too. The Heels sold out against the run, packed the box, and dared Underwood to beat them deep. Michael Allen was bottled up for most of the second half, and with Coastal’s offense sputtering, the defense spent more time on the field than they’d like. A once-comfortable 28–10 lead was suddenly looking fragile at 28–17 in the fourth.

But with the game tightening, Allen finally broke through. After UNC’s failed fourth-down gamble at midfield, the junior tailback ripped off 55 rushing yards on the drive, punctuating it with a 20-yard touchdown burst that iced an eighth straight win for the Chants.

Despite the scare, Vaughn reassured that all four of his banged-up playmakers are expected to be healthy for next week’s trip to Pittsburgh (4-5) — a game with a little extra weight. It was Pitt, after all, that handed Coastal their lone blemish in 2027 at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.

Deuce Knight threw a pair of 2nd half touchdowns as the Tar Heels threatened, but never challenged the Chanticleers.
