Conway, SC. - Give James Madison credit — the Dukes came to Conway ready to scrap and, for a while, they kept things interesting. But as the old saying goes, it’s the Jimmies and Joes, not the X’s and O’s, that decide games.

Coastal Carolina jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead in the first quarter, only to see JMU finally break through early in the second on a 34-yard burst from HB Jimmie Keller, capped by his own 2-yard score. The Dukes’ defense then made things even more tense, intercepting Heisman frontrunner Bryce Underwood twice in the end zone on consecutive possessions to keep it 17-7.

But the momentum shift never came. On the second pick, the Dukes’ offense started at their own 5 — and that’s where LB Tayveon Bennett blitzed untouched, burying QB JC Evans for a safety that lit the fuse. Coastal closed the half on an 18-point avalanche, fueled by another safety and two Underwood touchdown passes, and the rout was on.

Underwood danced into the end zone three more times in the third quarter as the Chanticleers turned a once-competitive game into a full-on blowout. By the final whistle, Coastal had outgained JMU 620-287, with the defense racking up seven sacks, two safeties, and a pair of turnovers.

“This might be the first time I’m not excited for a bye week,” Vaughn joked afterward, as the Chanticleers enter their midseason break at 6-0, averaging a staggering 54.5 points per game.

Through six weeks, the Heisman is clearly Underwood’s to lose. The former Michigan star has piled up 1,659 passing yards (8th nationally), 24 passing TDs (1st), 702 rushing yards (5th), and 13 rushing TDs (1st).

Coastal Carolina will hit the road for three straight after the bye, beginning in San Marcos against the Texas State Bobcats.

Gotta recognize that blitz - Bennett burying JC Evans to spark the 18 point 2nd quarter.

The Dukes defense did everything they could to stop the train that has been Bryce Underwood this season, but despite two interceptions were eventually bowled over.

Trio Of 4* Recruits Commit To Conway

Image

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are undefeated on the field at 6-0 and ranked 15th nationally — but the wins aren’t stopping there. On the recruiting trail, Coach Kade Vaughn’s program is stacking victories of another kind, already locking in a trio of 4-star commitments for the 2028 class.

Headlining the group is local product Matthew Hape, the No. 3 player in South Carolina and the No. 156 overall prospect nationally. The Myrtle Beach native, just a short drive from Conway, made his decision public after Coastal’s emphatic 66-21 win at Florida.

“I can’t hold it off any longer! Coastal has been #1 on my board from DAY ONE and this is WHY. THEY WIN and I want to be part of the new history Coach Vaughn is writing! CINO BABY!” Hape posted on X following the game.

The momentum didn’t stop there. Following Saturday’s 63-17 rout of Sun Belt rival James Madison, Coastal landed two more top-200 prospects: ATH Caleb Karapateas (No. 104) and MLB Nick Farrior (No. 166).

And Vaughn’s staff might not be done yet. The Chanticleers are considered the frontrunners for a pair of blue-chip defensive linemen — DE Eric Wheat (No. 67) and DT Lionel Ruggins (No. 74) — both of whom are expected to announce their commitments in the coming weeks.

For a program that, before Vaughn’s arrival, had never signed a 4-star recruit, the Chanticleers are suddenly recruiting like a rising powerhouse — and the rest of the Sun Belt is taking notice.

ESPN Breaking News
Vaughn, Coastal Carolina Subject Of NCAA Investigation Into Recent NIL Surge

Image

What was supposed to be a quiet bye week for No. 15 Coastal Carolina instead erupted into the program’s most chaotic news cycle of the Kade Vaughn era.

On Friday night, photos began circulating of Vaughn seated at a high-stakes poker table in Atlantic City. The images, reportedly taken by a passerby at the Borgata, show the Chanticleers’ head coach in his trademark teal-tinted aviators, hoodie up, and a tower of chips in front of him.

That would be headline-worthy enough for some programs. But for Coastal Carolina, it landed on the exact same day news broke that the NCAA was launching a preliminary inquiry into the Chanticleers’ surging NIL program — an inquiry triggered by comments allegedly made by two of the team’s star players.

According to multiple sources, an anonymous Appalachian State staff member overheard Heisman front-runner Bryce Underwood telling another player after the Chants’ 55-6 win in Boone:

“We’re here to win championships, but that NIL bag definitely don’t hurt.”

A week later after Coastal’s road rout of Florida, Gators staff reportedly relayed a similar sentiment from defensive star LJ McCray to a former teammate.

It was enough for the NCAA to start asking questions. And when Vaughn revealed in his post-Florida presser that he’d declined an interview for the Gators’ vacant head coaching position — despite being told the offer would “more than triple” his current Coastal salary — the speculation only grew.

NIL Boom Sparks Questions

Coastal Carolina’s NIL operation has seen unprecedented growth since Vaughn’s arrival in 2025. According to internal figures reviewed by ESPN, the Chanticleers’ player compensation pool has jumped from $415,000 in 2024 to over $4.3 million projected for 2027, a tenfold increase in just three years.

Coastal Carolina’s NIL collective — once an afterthought in the Sun Belt — has ballooned into one of the most formidable in the Group of Six. Multiple sources estimate the Chanticleers’ annual NIL pool now not only dwarfs the rest of the conference but rivals the resources of several lower-tier Power Four programs.

“It’s not Alabama or Ohio State money,” said one industry insider, “but compared to most G6 schools, it’s night and day. Frankly, they’re operating in a different league now.”

And while the success is undeniable, so is the mystery — that money has to be coming from somewhere. It simply wasn’t there one year, and then, almost overnight, it was.

One unnamed Sun Belt administrator, when asked if Vaughn himself could be fueling the surge, simply replied: “All I’ll say is, it’s amazing how quickly a program’s fortunes can change when the head coach is all-in.”

The surge has coincided with an equally sharp rise in both recruiting and transfer portal activity. Coastal had never signed a four-star recruit before Vaughn took over. In 2025, they nearly pulled off the unthinkable when 5* ATH Javier Kugbila — a player who never had Coastal on his radar at the start of the season — took an official visit and “seriously considered” signing before ultimately choosing Georgia.

At the time, the flirtation from a five-star talent raised eyebrows across the Sun Belt and beyond, but since Kugbila landed elsewhere, it was largely brushed aside.

Then came 2026, when Vaughn stunned the college football world by signing 4* LB Walt Reyna, ranked No. 117 nationally. In 2027, the dam has completely broken — the Chants have already secured commitments from three more 4* prospects (all ranked inside the Top 166) and are considered favorites for both No. 67 DE Eric Wheat and No. 74 DT Lionel Ruggins.

And it hasn’t just been high school recruiting. Under Vaughn, Coastal has become one of the most aggressive — and successful — portal programs in the nation, landing multiple starters from Power Four programs over the past two years. The crown jewel? Former No. 1 overall recruit Bryce Underwood, the top transfer in the 2026 cycle, who left Michigan and is now the face of the program — and the Heisman race.

For a program that once struggled to crack the Top 75 in recruiting rankings, the rapid escalation has been hard for rival coaches — and NCAA investigators — to ignore.

AD Miller Backs His Coach

Coastal AD Chance Miller came to Vaughn’s defense Sunday, calling the NCAA probe “a distraction” and dismissing any notion that his head coach had directly paid players.

“Kade Vaughn has never written a check to a player, period,” Miller said. “Has he been instrumental in rallying support for our NIL collectives? Absolutely. Every coach in the country is. This program is playing by the rules, and our focus is on finishing what we’ve started this season.”

Miller also confirmed that Coastal had already discussed a contract extension with Vaughn before the season, one that would make him the highest-paid coach in Sun Belt history, but both sides agreed to wait until after the playoff push to finalize it.

Vaughn, for his part, didn’t exactly choose the “nothing to see here” approach when addressing the rumors the next morning, posting on X:

“They think we’re out here breaking the rules because we’re playing chess, while the rest of these fools are playing checkers.”

GameDay Weighs In

The morning after the news broke, College GameDay opened its Week 7 show with a dedicated segment on the Coastal chaos.

Rece Davis: “The NIL landscape has changed the sport, but when a Sun Belt team goes from never signing a four-star to landing multiple in one class — and is a legitimate playoff contender — it’s bound to turn heads. Now with the Bryce Underwood comments and the poker table photos… you’ve got a perfect storm of speculation.”

Desmond Howard: “Look, I love what Vaughn’s doing on the field, but if the NCAA even smells impropriety here, it could derail their whole season. It’s not just about playing by the rules — it’s about avoiding the perception that you’re bending them.”

Pat McAfee: “Man, I love this. This dude’s beating Clemson, embarrassing Florida, taking NIL to the next level, and stacking chips — literally — in Atlantic City. This is big-time ball with a Vegas flair. If it’s all above board, Kade Vaughn might be the most electric coach in college football history.”

Howard: “Pat, perception matters. The wrong headline at the wrong time and suddenly you’re fighting that instead of your opponent.”

McAfee: “I’m gonna say it right now — this is people hating on a dude who’s winning too much, too fast. If the NCAA wants to dig, fine, but until they find something, this is noise. Coastal’s a legit threat to crash the playoff, and some folks don’t like it.”

As the noise around Conway grows louder, so does the intrigue. Whether the NCAA probe uncovers anything improper or simply confirms Vaughn’s program is operating within the rules, the storyline is far from over.

For now, the Chanticleers keep winning, and the head coach at the center of it all shows no signs of slowing down — on the recruiting trail, in the transfer portal, or on Saturdays.

Going to have to give it at least a few years of dominating the Sun Belt before that happens imo. Wouldn't make sense to jump on just a few good seasons. but we will definitely keep scheduling top tier non-conference opponents - aaand liberty. Cause they're the only rival in game for coastal and I need 4 rivalry wins to unlock the architect arch type
