The Pens will have to move along without star Evgeni Malkin - an upper body injury will see him miss some time.
Pens without star Malkin, Sullivan says major injury "narrowly avoided"
PITTSBURGH, PA -- - The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced that assistant captain and current scoring leader Evgeni Malkin will be out for the next few games with an upper body injury he suffered in the Penguins' 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes; their 11th-straight victory that has catapulted them to the top of the Eastern Conference standings, sitting only behind the Colorado Avalanche league-wide.
Malkin has scored 21 goals and 39 points, sharing the team-lead with captain Sidney Crosby. He assisted the opening goal of the game last night from defenseman Jack St. Ivany before leaving midway through the game. Forward Kevin Hayes enters the lineup as the Penguins reshuffle their forward lines, notably seeing Samuel Poulin move to the first line on Crosby's wing while Danton Heinen falls to the third line. Tommy Novak will take Malkin's spot in between Rutger McGroarty and Rickard Rakell, who is looking to end a cold streak of his own.
The Pens will take their 11-game winning streak back home and take on division rival Columbus Blue Jackets before welcoming Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on January 9th.
