Coach Vaughn Nabs 14 Portal Transfers, Finishes With 56th Ranked Class
By The Teal Wave - March 2026

After a resurgent 2025 season that brought Coastal Carolina its first Sun Belt title since the Jamey Chadwell era and only the third bowl victory in program history, the offseason hit like a rip current.

Fifteen players left through the transfer portal. Forty-two total scholarships opened. For a brief moment, even after all the success, some in Conway feared they were back at square one.

But when the dust settled, Coach Kade Vaughn delivered.

With 35 new additions — 21 high school signees and 14 portal transfers — the Chanticleers closed out the cycle ranked 56th nationally, a remarkable haul given the late start Vaughn had a year ago.

“The Teal is back like they never left,” Vaughn smirked, slipping off his now-signature teal-tinted aviators during his signing day press conference.

“Keeping Roquan [Barber] was the top priority, no doubt,” Vaughn said. “Once he was locked in, it was about surrounding him with the pieces that fit the vision we’ve got for this offense in Year 2.”

With veteran backs Jalen John (graduation), Ja’Vin Simpkins (portal), and Camerun Knox (portal) all gone, replacing production in the backfield was a must. Coastal answered with a 1-2 punch from the portal in Bill Davis (Louisiana) and Michael Allen (Marshall).

“We’re going to miss Ja’Vin greatly, but Michael has that same explosion and vision,” Vaughn said. “And Davis? He’s a bruiser with speed. The kind of blend Jalen gave us last year. We’re excited about both.”

The offense didn’t stop there. With tackle Nick Del Grande off to the portal and center Thomas Jefferson out of eligibility, Vaughn brought in reinforcements up front. Johnny Williams IV (Missouri) and Stanton Ramil (Michigan State) will anchor the left side of the line with Williams IV moving to guard, while Corey Miller (UCF) steps into the middle.

“Ro [Barber] only took 8 sacks last year, but he had to escape way too often,” Vaughn said. “This year, we want him choosing when to run — not running because he has no choice.”

To help with the receiving corps after graduating their top three pass catchers, Vaughn landed Aziah Johnson from North Carolina — a dynamic threat expected to start immediately.

And while the offense grabbed headlines, the biggest addition of all came on the other side of the ball.

LJ McCray, a former 5-star defensive lineman and Florida Gator, shocked many by committing to Coastal after Billy Napier’s dismissal in Gainesville.

“For a defense that was already top-third in the league? Adding McCray is wild,” said 247Sports’ John Garcia Jr. “He’s a game-wrecker.”

McCray joins Aakil Washington (SMU) and Nick James (Pitt) in revamping a defensive line that lost three starters. Tayveon Bennett, formerly of Alabama, also arrives to inject SEC-caliber intensity into the linebacker room.

After being gashed at times through the air in 2025, Coastal’s staff made no secret they were upgrading the secondary.

Ja’Marley Riddle (East Carolina) was the first to commit. “He told us he was sold watching last year’s comeback win — seeing the passion in person,” Vaughn said. Ayden Jackson (Georgia Southern), Josiah Persinger (Virginia), and Trevor Holton (Georgia) round out the group, with Holton making the switch from safety to man-coverage corner.

“Trevor was one of the best coverage safeties in the portal,” said DC Jeremiah Johnson. “We think he’s about to become one of the best corners in the Sun Belt.”

Last year, the Chants leaned heavily on zone coverage — a product of necessity more than design.

“This fall, we’re flipping that,” Johnson said. “We’re going to ask our guys to hold up one-on-one, just long enough for our front seven to bring the heat. No more hiding. We’re going island hunting.”

The exodus was real — and so was the concern. But after hauling in one of the most talent-rich classes in school history and flipping multiple players back from the portal, the message out of Conway is loud and clear:

Coastal Carolina isn’t just hanging on. They’re coming.

As Vaughn put it: “The Teal is back, baby.” And they’ve got the teeth to prove it.

We were in on TJ Bush Jr early and Sammy Brown but were quickly outmuscled. That's okay though. I like who we got overall

Realignment Timeout: Why College Football Pressed Pause On Its Coast To Coast Experiment

The Pac‑12 thought it had found salvation by inviting five Mountain West schools. USC and UCLA imagined Big Ten riches would erase the pain of red‑eye flights. Then the bills came due, the ratings tanked, and the Department of Justice started asking very direct questions.

Late Thursday the Pac‑12, Mountain West, Big Ten and the DOJ signed a one‑year “cease‑fire.” Everyone stays put for the 2026 season, a working group will re‑draw the college‑sports map this fall, and a more sensible, region‑first set‑up is expected to launch in 2027. Here’s why that about‑face happened and what it means.

The Money Bomb: Paying Players Changes Every Spreadsheet

On January 12 university accountants closed the books for fiscal 2025 and, for the first time, plugged in the House v. NCAA settlement. The ruling forces every Division I school to set aside up to $20.5 million a year so athletes can share in TV money.

That new expense swallowed half the revenue boost schools expected from jumping leagues. The five Mountain West programs eyeing the Pac‑12 discovered they would run $8‑12 million deficits once exit fees and charter flights to the Pacific coast were added. USC and UCLA saw the same logic in reverse: Big Ten paydays remain huge, but shuttling volleyball teams to Rutgers and Penn State would wipe out much of the bonus.

Bottom line: paying athletes turned long‑distance marriages from “profitable” to “painful” almost overnight.

Fans Changed the Channel, and Networks Noticed

It wasn’t just the books—eyeballs told the same story. Final 2025 Nielsen data showed Rutgers‑UCLA on FS1 drew only 426,000 viewers, the worst prime‑time Big Ten number of Week 8. Fans in Los Angeles simply didn’t put aside Saturday night for Rutgers, and Scarlet Knight die‑hards had little reason to stay up past midnight Eastern.

Faced with slumping ratings and empty visitor sections, ESPN, FOX and NBC dangled a new carrot: starting with the 2027 schedule, any league that stages 80 percent of its games within an 800‑mile radius taps into a $90 million bonus pool. The networks want packed stadiums and revived rivalries—and they’re willing to pay for them.

Translation: TV money is still king, but the king now prefers short road trips and loud crowds.

When Exit Fees Look Like a “No‑Poach” Cartel

A $55 million lawsuit between the Pac‑12 and Mountain West over withdrawal penalties landed in federal court this spring. During discovery, attorneys produced e‑mails that sounded a lot like “you stay out of our backyard and we’ll stay out of yours.” That phrase is kryptonite to antitrust lawyers.

The DOJ subpoenaed both conferences—and the Big Ten—on June 12. Rather than risk treble damages that could triple any verdict, the leagues negotiated a provisional consent decree:

USC and UCLA will spend one final year in the Big Ten; as part of the consent decree, the league agreed to waive roughly 70  percent of its usual exit fee if the Trojans and Bruins join a DOJ‑approved, region‑heavy league for 2027. The Pac‑12, still at two members for now, will survive 2026 through creative scheduling before re-stocking to the minimum requirement for the 2027 season.

So What Happens Next?

August 18: Commissioners, DOJ staff and network execs start meeting every other week to sketch 2027 maps.

November 15: School presidents are expected to vote on new conference constitutions, revenue splits and travel rules.

January 15, 2027: Final 2027 football schedules must land on the College Football Playoff desk.

July 1, 2027: Banners change, Olympic sports report to new leagues, and football camps open weeks later.

Early models point to a Pacific‑10 featuring USC, UCLA, the four Northwest schools, Cal, Stanford, plus San Diego State and Fresno State. The Mountain West would re‑brand as the Big Mountain, and the Big 12 keeps its Four Corners quartet—creating three leagues that finally make geographic sense.

Why Fans Should Care

If the plan holds, 2026 will be the last season of awkward cross‑country detours. By 2027, Trojan fans can drive to Oregon again, and Boise State loyalists won’t need three connecting flights to watch a conference road game. Networks get better ratings, athletes spend less time in airports, and athletic departments stop hemorrhaging red ink.

In other words, college football’s wild realignment ride may be steering back toward the one thing that made the sport magical in the first place: neighbors playing neighbors on autumn Saturdays.

There was a time when Coastal Carolina could sneak up on people. That time is over.

After an 11-win breakout in 2025 — featuring wins over East Carolina, a Sun Belt Championship, and a Salute to Veterans Bowl victory over Toledo — the Chanticleers enter 2026 not as underdogs, but as the hunted. No one’s overlooking the boys from Conway anymore, and Head Coach Kade Vaughn wouldn’t have it any other way.

Vaughn, now infamous for his blend of steely swagger and no-nonsense intensity, has rubbed more than a few conference peers the wrong way. The tension started with Dowell Loggains — Vaughn’s old alma mater coach at Appalachian State — and only escalated through the year.

A frosty postgame handshake with Marshall’s Tony Gibson added fuel to the fire, but it was the Sun Belt Championship Game against Southern Miss that ignited the full-on blaze. Former five-star LJ McCray (Florida) anchors a revamped defensive front that includes Aakil Washington (SMU) and Nick James (Pitt). With that trio up front, Coastal won’t need to blitz every down to get pressure.

The backend overhaul was just as aggressive.

Ayden Jackson (Georgia Southern) and Josiah Persinger (Virginia) are expected to start at corner, with Ja’Marley Riddle (East Carolina) manning free safety and Trevor Holton (Georgia) making the switch from safety to corner.

“Last year, we were forced into soft zones because of personnel,” said Chants Up! host Ripp Hamilton. “Now? They’ve got man-capable corners, SEC talent up front, and the swagger to match. Coach Johnson might finally get to call the defense he actually wants to run.”

The Road Ahead: Rivalries, Receipts, and Redemption

The schedule gives Coastal plenty of chances to prove they belong on a national stage.

They open at home with rival Liberty, then head to Williams-Brice Stadium for a revenge shot at South Carolina — the site of their last loss in 2025.

“Still not a rivalry,” Vaughn smirked. “But we make noise in Columbia? That changes.”

Coastal then hosts East Carolina before traveling to Chapel Hill for a showdown with Vaughn’s old squad, the North Carolina Tar Heels.

“We want to show local recruits that we run the Carolinas,” Vaughn said. “Not UNC. Not USC. Sure as hell not App State. The Teal.”

In-conference, the Chants will visit both Marshall and Southern Miss — two emotionally charged matchups after last year’s fireworks. If Coastal can go 2–2 in non-conference play — a likely projection with losses to the two P5 Carolina schools — they’ll be in position for another Sun Belt title run.

A New Era, Same Attitude

Last year’s Chanticleers were scrappy. This year’s team wants to dominate.

The Sun Belt has taken notice — Coastal is the preseason favorite. But Vaughn isn’t cashing checks early.

“We’ve seen the rankings. That’s nice. But games aren’t played in the preseason,” he said.

“We’re still grinding. Still chasing. If anyone wants the smoke — they can come get it.

And just so we’re clear…King Kong ain’t got nothing on the Chanticleers.”
