Fredrick McCallum Becomes Latest Chanticleer To Capture Heisman Trophy

Image

Conway, SC. -Coastal Carolina running back Fredrick McCallum has officially joined the growing lineage of Heisman winners to play on The Teal. The junior tailback captured the 2034 Heisman Trophy on Saturday night, giving the Chanticleers their third winner in the last four seasons.

“I watched how Cordell went to work last year, and I knew if I stayed healthy, I had a shot to bring it home again,” McCallum said from the podium after edging out runner ups Marquis Coffee, Iowa State’s dual-threat star, and Ohio State quarterback Angelo Allgeier, McCallum’s former teammate who began his career in Columbus.

Then, turning toward Allgeier, McCallum added: “I always thought it’d be you or me up here, big bro. I just didn’t think we’d be wearing different jerseys. But sometimes life throws you a curveball you didn’t know you could hit.”

McCallum’s resume wasn’t as statistically overwhelming as past Chanticleer winners, Devin Hajrullahu’s historic 1,000/1,000 season in 2031 or Cordell Jennings’ near Barry Sanders touchdown chase a year ago, but voters still viewed him as the nation’s most dynamic all around weapon on the No. 1 team in the country.

He finished with 1,797 rushing yards (second nationally) and 16 touchdowns, adding 72 receptions for 547 yards and three more scores. That versatility, according to sources familiar with the voting, pushed him past Coffee and Allgeier.

Coffee, who totaled 3,021 passing yards, 1,000 rushing yards, and 37 touchdowns, claimed the Unitas Golden Arm Award. Allgeier captured the Davey O’Brien after throwing for more than 4,000 yards and 45 touchdowns.

McCallum also swept the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Doak Walker Awards. Coastal’s defensive tradition held strong as well: linebacker Cordell Marvin took home the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Butkus, while cornerback Channing Armour earned the Jim Thorpe Award.

Head coach Marcus Freeman finished third in Bear Bryant Coach of the Year voting behind Tulane’s Jedd Fisch and UTEP’s Tony Adams. Defensive coordinator Brent Pry placed sixth in the Broyles voting.

The Road to Arlington

For the first time in the College Football Playoff era, the Baylor Bears are in the field, but not without a heavy dose of controversy.

Baylor outgunned BYU in the Big 12 Championship Game, yet entered the weekend ranked No. 17 and still needed a cascade of outside help. With the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC title winners all locking up the first three automatic bids, and Top 10 UTEP clinching the C-USA crown to secure the fourth, the Bears’ hopes hinged on chaos in the Pac-12 and AAC.

They got exactly that.

Memphis stunned No. 15 Tulane with a late fourth-quarter touchdown, eliminating the Green Wave from the final automatic berth. But the real upheaval came hours later, when Washington erased a 17 point deficit in the fourth quarter to shock No. 8 Oregon, denying the Ducks both the Pac-12 title and their playoff lifeline.

The fallout was seismic. Baylor, at 11–2, leapfrogged idle Miami (10–2), Iowa (9–3), and free falling Oregon, who tumbled from eighth to 14th. The Bears claimed the fifth and final automatic qualifier spot, capping one of the wildest Selection Saturdays in years.

“We knew the situation,” Oregon coach DeShaun Foster said afterward. “Whether you agree with us being ranked eighth with one loss or not, it was simple: win and you’re in. We didn’t. That’s on us.”

Now comes the reality check for Baylor and head coach Eric Morris: Alabama awaits. The Bears draw the Crimson Tide in a true David and Goliath matchup, with the winner advancing to the Sugar Bowl to face No. 4 Missouri, which improbably held its ranking despite falling to Alabama in the SEC title game.

The other 1st Round Matchups are as follows:

No. 9 Texas A&M travels to No. 8 Tennessee for a spot in the Orange Bowl, where two time defending national champion Coastal Carolina is waiting.

No. 11 UTEP heads to No. 6 Ole Miss in Oxford, with the winner moving on to meet Clemson in the Cotton Bowl another test for the Miners’ dream season.

Nebraska and Wisconsin will meet again in Madison, this time with a Rose Bowl berth on the line. The victor gets Big Ten champion Ohio State.

Is Marcus Freeman In Conway For A Good Time, Or A Long Time?

Image

Conway, SC. - When Marcus Freeman accepted the Coastal Carolina job after two reputation-rebuilding seasons at Troy, most viewed it as a return to form for the former Notre Dame head coach, a coach many once assumed would anchor the Fighting Irish for a decade.

But now, with Coastal preparing to chase a third straight national title (and a first under Freeman), an uncomfortable question hangs over Conway:

Is Coastal Carolina the destination for Freeman, or just another stepping stone?

“I think when Freeman was hired, there were only a few programs Coastal worried about,” said a source close to former AD Chance Miller, who was removed from his post two years ago in favor of Mike Buddie. “Ohio State was the obvious one. it’s home for him. Alabama was second. Georgia was third. That was the whole list.”

And now, almost a year later, Georgia has cracked the door wide open.

The Bulldogs announced they were parting ways with Kirby Smart after 19 seasons, three national championships, and a rocky final stretch. Smart’s 7–6 campaign in 2032 was followed by a strong 13–1 bounce-back in 2033, albeit without a Playoff win, and this season’s 5–7 collapse ultimately forced the program to reset.

With Smart out, Freeman’s name surfaced immediately.

Sources confirm Georgia has requested interviews with Freeman, Texas A&M’s Billy Napier, and Missouri’s Brent Key.

Freeman, predictably, downplayed the noise.

“I’m the head coach at Coastal Carolina,” he said. “My sole focus is preparing for a national championship run.”

But behind the scenes, skepticism remains.

“His buyout is pocket change for Georgia,” the source noted, hinting that the Bulldogs may be ready to make an aggressive play.

And the calculus isn’t simple. On one hand, Coastal has dominated the ACC since joining, and the path to the Playoff is smoother than ever. Stability, recruiting momentum, and a national brand all point to a long, successful runway in Conway.

On the other hand?

“The SEC is a different animal,” the source said. “Winning there means more. And that alone might be enough to tempt Freeman, even if Coastal is arguably one tier below the Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio States of the world.”

For now, the Chanticleers march toward another title. But the tension behind the curtain isn’t going away anytime soon.

Switch Coastal to the SEC. Both problems solved then.

Agree with Shire. Playoffs is essentially turning into a competition for who's coming in 2nd to Coastal. Obviously, y'all are in the thick of the conference region, might as well play in the pinnacle & kill 2 birds

I think realistically, we could move to the SEC after one more season. That would give us six total in the conference (2030-2035). Until then, we're treating the ACC like the Sun Belt
