Got to assert our dominance again before we get to the brutal 2nd half.

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers may have left the NCAA’s NIL probe in the rearview mirror, but their fans haven’t forgotten who lit the fuse. A year later, Dowell Loggains still gets the brunt of the venom in Conway. Brooks Stadium was once again littered with signs mocking the Appalachian State head coach as the “cigar tip” Vaughn flicks away, and as the fourth quarter wound down with the Chants firmly in control, the crowd erupted in a unified chant of “0-for-five!”—a reminder that Loggains has yet to notch a win against Vaughn since he took over in Conway.

“I take my trash talking very serious—it’s part of the mental game,” Vaughn said after the game, smiling as he addressed the raucous atmosphere. “But this fan base? They make it easy. They’re tuned in, they ride with us, and I don’t think I’m reaching when I say they’re one of the best in the country. Period.” Then, with a familiar grin, Vaughn added: “And head and shoulders above those scrubs in Boone.”

App State came out swinging, landing the first blow with a 27-yard touchdown strike from Courtland Gainwell on their opening drive. But when Sidney Barkow, playing in a limited role to avoid overuse, ripped off a 70-yard touchdown run, the momentum swung hard. From there, Coastal buried their rival under a wave of second- and third-quarter touchdowns, before easing off the gas in the final frame.

The game also provided a glimpse into Coastal’s future at wide receiver. After freshman Carl Kopp flashed in mop-up duty a week ago, Vaughn gave him extended first-team reps—and the Vanceboro, N.C. native delivered in emphatic fashion. Kopp hauled in eight catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns, cementing himself as part of the rotation going forward. “I’d say it’s safe to say he’s in the lineup now,” Vaughn quipped.

With App State dispatched once again, Coastal heads west for a much stiffer test: a trip to the Pacific Northwest to face the 19th-ranked Washington Huskies, a game that will challenge not only Mason Kelsay, but also his young and suddenly intriguing receiving corps.

Image
Sideny Barkow may be one of the fastest players in the entire country and proved it once again, dusting the App State defense on this 70 yard sprint.

Image
Coach Kade Vaughn has always preached if you make plays, you'll see the field and once again that was evident with WR Carl Kopp entering the starting lineup and snagging three touchdowns to secure his spot in the depth chart.

Seattle, WA. - The last time Coastal Carolina hit the road to face a ranked opponent, they left Tallahassee stunned after Florida State stormed back in the second half to hand them their first loss since 2027. This time around in Seattle, the Chanticleers made sure history didn’t repeat itself, closing strong in the fourth quarter to silence a late Washington rally and leave the Pacific Northwest with a 35-21 win.

The Chants wasted no time setting the tone. On just the second play from scrimmage, tight end Trishtin Glass reminded everyone why he’s one of the nation’s most dangerous mismatches, spinning out of a tackle and racing 75 yards for a touchdown. That early strike sparked a dominant first half where Coastal scored on four of their first five possessions and built a 28-7 lead, punctuated by Eli Corbin’s first interception of the season setting up another score before the break.

But the game nearly flipped in the third quarter. Mason Kelsay coughed up two costly red-zone turnovers—a fumble and an interception—that kept the Huskies alive. Washington seized the opening, striking on an 80-yard bomb to Darnell Burnett, who beat true freshman corner Mike Momah clean in press coverage. The play threatened to shift momentum, but Kelsay responded with poise. He engineered a gritty 12-play, 4:12 drive, finishing it off with a six-yard swing pass to running back Sidney Barkow to stretch the lead back to three scores.

Washington landed one more punch as Daunte Kalis hurdled his way to a 61-yard touchdown, then marched into the red zone late with a chance to make it a one-possession game. But safety Nick Rudd-Johnson played perfect coverage in the back of the end zone, batting down Eli Corbin’s pass to seal the win. From there, Coastal bled the clock and celebrated a statement road victory.

Barkow was the workhorse, finally unleashed after two weeks of limited snaps. The Iowa State transfer piled up 145 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, validating Vaughn’s decision to save him for bigger moments. “This is why he’s been on a snap count,” Vaughn explained. “We want his legs fresh when it matters. Too often in the past, we’ve leaned too heavily on our stars early, and it’s cost us late. Not this year.”

Kelsay’s performance was steady if not spotless—he threw for two scores and ran efficiently, but his pair of red-zone mistakes highlighted the fine line Coastal walks with an inexperienced quarterback. Still, the defense did its part, tightening up after giving up a couple of explosives and forcing Corbin to settle for underneath throws most of the night. “Outside of the two big plays, we controlled the pace,” Vaughn said afterward. “We forced them into long drives and took away the quick stuff. You’d like a few more sacks, but Corbin got rid of it just quick enough.”

With the win, Coastal moves to 5-1 and turns its attention to a marquee showdown at home next week against fellow independent powerhouse Notre Dame (4-1)—a matchup that could carry major playoff implications.

Image
Kelsay tried to squeeze the ball just behind the dropping DE, who made an athletic play to nab the INT.

Image
The Huskies still would have needed help if they scored again, but Nick Rudd-Johnson made sure there was no hope batting away the 4th and goal pass to seal the win.

Image
Daunte Kalis was bottled up most of the night until he hurdled his way to a 61 yard score late in the 4th Q.

Chanticleers Make History In A Big Way

Image

Conway, SC. - Bryce Underwood remains the crown jewel of Coastal Carolina football, the highest-rated player ever to wear Teal. But with Kade Vaughn’s machine now churning at full speed, Underwood might not hold that distinction for long—because the Chanticleers just landed their first-ever 5-star prep recruit.

And he’s a big one.

Jamal Stephen, a 6’7”, 247-pound athletic marvel from Covington, Georgia, announced he is committing to Coastal Carolina over heavyweights Alabama and Auburn. The decision instantly sent shockwaves through the recruiting world and marked another milestone in the Chanticleers’ rapid ascent.

“You look at what Coach Vaughn has done and there’s no doubt he’s about to run this business for a long time,” Stephen said during his announcement. “I can’t wait to be one of those building blocks—the kind of piece you look back on and say, ‘that’s where the machine started.’”

Stephen is already drawing lofty comparisons to former Florida Gator star Kyle Pitts, but some scouts think his blend of size, speed, and hands could push him even higher. “It’s a lofty comp, sure,” one evaluator noted, “but Stephen’s skill set fits perfectly in Vaughn’s system. Coastal isn’t shy about featuring the tight end in creative ways, and this kid has the tools to thrive right away.”

And as fate would have it, the Chanticleers may have also secured Stephen’s quarterback of the future. Just hours after Coastal’s statement win in Seattle, Fredrick Meredith—a dual-threat from North Carolina—announced his commitment. Meredith, the nation’s 15th-ranked quarterback and No. 274 overall prospect, brings exactly the kind of athletic profile Vaughn covets under center.

“He’s raw, no question,” one scout admitted. “The accuracy needs work. But he’s got a live arm, elite mobility, and the upside to grow into a real problem in Vaughn’s scheme.”

With Stephen, Meredith, and early signee Lee Omameh already on board, Coastal now holds three verbal commitments for the 2030 class, with as many as five more decisions expected in the coming weeks. For a program that once struggled to even get in the room with top-tier recruits, the pipeline of talent now choosing The Teal speaks volumes about how far Vaughn has taken the program—and how much higher they might still climb.
