Conway, SC. - Coastal Carolina didn’t stay in the mud for long. After back-to-back weeks of turbulence that left them matching their combined loss total from the previous two seasons before September was even over, the Chanticleers looked every bit like defending champions again in a 45-16 demolition of No. 18 Arizona State.

“Every team has bad weeks, every player has bad games,” head coach Kade Vaughn said after the win. “The key is what you do after. Tonight, we answered.”

The spotlight was brightest on quarterback Mason Kelsay, who took heavy criticism following his meltdown against Florida State. This time, the redshirt senior delivered the type of poised, playmaking performance Coastal desperately needed: 390 total yards, four touchdowns, only one turnover, and—most tellingly—no sacks. He kept his feet under him, stretched plays when necessary, and punished Arizona State’s defense when they dared him to stand in and deliver.

When asked whether he’d considered pulling Kelsay during the rough stretch, Vaughn dodged specifics but praised his quarterback’s accountability. “Mason had the best week of practice we could’ve asked for,” Vaughn said. “Good leaders don’t point fingers—they take ownership. He did that, and I wasn’t about to pull a guy who put in that kind of work.”

For once, Kelsay didn’t have to carry the weight alone. Coastal’s defense, torched for 538 yards and five scores the week before, looked like a different unit. They clamped down on ASU quarterback Marshall Hurt, holding him to just 83 yards at halftime and a pedestrian 156 for the game on 11-for-34 passing. Vaughn’s squad turned the contest into what he loves most: a bruising, physical slugfest where the Chants wore down the opponent until there was nothing left.

“It wasn’t flashy, it wasn’t gaudy,” Vaughn said. “But it was Coastal football—hit ‘em in the mouth, play through the whistle, and keep grinding.”

The victory steadied the ship and kept the Chanticleers from slipping below .500 for the first time since Vaughn’s inaugural season. But there’s little time to celebrate. Up next is a short road trip to Chapel Hill, where a 3-1 North Carolina team—fresh off impressive wins over USC and Duke—waits with bad intentions.

Trishtin Glass stepped up in a big way with 100 yards and two touchdowns to support his struggling QB.

See ya! Kiante Patten snatched freshman CB Xaver Montague's ankles on his 75 yard touchdown run.

A 1st Q fumble lead to the first points for the Sun Devils, but unlike last week Kelsay didn't compound his mistakes and steadied the ship.

Chapel Hill, NC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers followed up their rebound win over Arizona State with a short trip to Chapel Hill, and this time there was no stumble. The defending national champions dominated both sides of the ball in a 58-16 dismantling of North Carolina, showing poise, efficiency, and a defensive edge that silenced Kenan Stadium early.

From the opening possession, Kade Vaughn’s squad made it clear they weren’t interested in easing into the game. Twice on the first drive the Chants went for it on fourth-and-short, twice they converted, and Mason Kelsay capped the march himself with a one-yard plunge. Even after an interception late in the first quarter set up a Tar Heel field goal, Kelsay settled in and kept the offense rolling. By the time the half was nearly through, Coastal had built a 21-3 cushion.

North Carolina managed to briefly spark its home crowd with a highlight-reel 54-yard touchdown from Josh Fehoko, who muscled through multiple tacklers on his way to the end zone. But just as quickly, Coastal punched back in a way few fans had ever seen. Malik Northrup screamed off the edge to block the PAT, and linebacker Craig Bragg scooped it up, taking it the other way for the rare defensive two-point conversion. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in person,” Vaughn admitted with a grin afterward.

The Chants weren’t finished in the half either. With seconds left, Kelsay orchestrated a flawless two-minute drill, threading a strike to Matthew Hape for a two-yard touchdown that sent Coastal into the locker room with a commanding 30-9 lead.

The second half was more cruise control than chaos. Coastal’s defense suffocated the Tar Heels, while Vaughn turned the fourth quarter into what he called “an audition.” With a young receiver room still searching for reliable playmakers, true freshmen Carl Kopp and David Goedeke both made emphatic statements. Kopp’s speed stretched the defense for a long score, while Goedeke showcased his athleticism on another explosive touchdown grab.

“We’ve got a bunch of true freshmen receivers, and it’s a balance between saving that extra year of eligibility versus giving them live reps,” Vaughn explained. “We saw flashes tonight that might have earned some of those guys bigger roles moving forward.”

For the second straight week, Coastal paired efficient quarterback play with smothering defense, this time turning what was billed as a tricky rivalry road game into a laugher. With the passing game beginning to find rhythm and a few new weapons emerging, the Chanticleers head into their rivalry showdown with Appalachian State looking more and more like themselves.

Mike Momah may still be feeling his way through his transition to cornerback, but the Philadelphia native nabbed his 1st INT in Chapel Hill.
