He provided the spark that lit the match, he's earned the right to keep the job for a bit
I mean, getting down 21-7 without a passing yard was a bit rough, but after that it was smooth

Tallahassee, FL. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers learned the hard way that one week’s savior can be the next week’s liability. After stealing the QB1 job with a dazzling debut against Wake Forest, Mason Kelsay came crashing back to earth in Tallahassee, harassed all night by a ferocious Florida State defense that bottled up his improvisational style.
Kelsay still flashed mobility with 61 rushing yards, but the rest of the stat line told the story: five sacks, two interceptions on his final two drives, and a 48% completion rate. As the Seminoles gradually stacked the box, daring him to win with his arm, the Delaware native couldn’t find consistent answers.
And yet, for all the chaos, the defending national champions had the game within their grasp. Coastal jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead off a pair of early picks on FSU quarterback Frank Powell, but the red shirt junior responded with a jaw-dropping 538-yard, five-touchdown performance. Big plays doomed the Chanticleers: a 78-yard run by Donald Prince, a 48-yard bomb to Lionel Judovsky, and eventually the back-breaking 85-yard strike to James Tryon on a controversial pick route.
Even so, Coastal looked like it might sneak out with a narrow win. Up 35-34 in the fourth quarter, Kelsay had the Chants driving into Seminole territory with under three minutes to play. That’s when Coach Kade Vaughn dialed up a wheel route—hoping to land the knockout punch—but linebacker Ethan Pritchard sniffed it out and jumped the throw. One play later, Powell connected with Tryon, and the game flipped for good.
Florida State tacked on one more score after Kelsay’s desperate fourth-down heave fell incomplete, then sealed it with a final interception. What began as a 14-0 Coastal advantage ended as a humbling 47-35 defeat, sending the champs home licking their wounds.
“Disappointing, from the top on down,” Vaughn said postgame. “We thought we had a solid plan, but when you can’t complete basic concepts, it makes the whole thing tougher. The O-line, the backs, the defense—they fought. But you can’t give up big plays on one end and fail to execute on the other.”
Pressed on whether Kelsay would remain the starter, Vaughn kept it short: “We’ll evaluate. We’ve got work to do.”
Now, as the Chants prepare to host 18th-ranked Arizona State, the biggest question isn’t about their defense or their talent—it’s about whether the quarterback carousel is about to start spinning again.

Florida State gave Kelsay no room to improvise as he was harassed all evening by the Seminole defense.

Three early interceptions helped Coastal build an early lead, but it wasn't enough to steal a win at Doak Campbell.

The first of two 4th Q interceptions that finally swung the tide to Florida State for good.
