I like Daboll. Although the wording of it doesn't seem like he's going to be the head coach :hmm:
he is not, he is an offensive assistant :curtain:

Former first round pick Josh Conerly Jr traded to Titans for Charles Omenihu, Nakobe Dean
The Tennessee Titans have traded edge rusher Charles Omenihu and linebacker Nakobe Dean to the Washington Commanders for offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr.

A first round pick in 2025, Conerly started all seventeen games at right tackle for the Commanders as a rookie prior to them drafting right tackle Francis Mauigoa in the first round in last year's draft. Conerly lost the job to Mauigoa and the Commanders are working on an extension on 33-year old Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil who is entering the last year of his deal, leaving Conerly as the odd-man out after not starting a game last year.

Conerly projects to transition back to left tackle, where he played in college at Oregon, as the Titans look to rebuild an offensive line that traded two starters in center Lloyd Cushenberry and left tackle Dan Moore.

Omenihu had ten tackles for loss and five sacks and is set to make under $4 million this upcoming season, bringing Washington some much needed pass rush opposite of Arnold Ebiketie and Nakobe Dean projects to slide right into a starting spot next to Frankie Luvu and has three years left on his deal. He was supplanted by linebacker Whit Weeks in Tennessee in the last few weeks of the regular season and in the playoffs.

Tennessee finally gets on the board with Joshua Williams, Darnell Washington
Free agent defensive back Joshua Williams and tight end Darnell Washington have signed with the Tennessee Titans, becoming the Titans first free agent signings of the period. Williams, whose played in the slot and on the outside at corner, is set to make $15 million over three years while Washington is a two year, $16 million.

Both players project to be depth pieces for the Titans although a path is there for them to potentially push for a starting role in the spring and summer.

Williams joins an increasingly crowded cornerback room that features Jermaine Matthews and Roger McCreary as entrenched starters on the outside and in the nickel, there's special teams ace Marcus Jones and feel good story Elijah Jones who singed an extension this past off-season.

Chigoziem Okonkwo is the returning starter at tight end, leading the team with 71 receptions for 752 yards and four touchdowns but Washington's run blocking brings a different element to the room as Gunnar Helm is more of a pass catching option at six-foot-six and 241 pounds. Washington is listed at six-foot-seven and 264 pounds but has previously stated that he's played closer to 300-pounds in his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He caught just one pass last season and saw a reduced role behind Pat Freiermuth.

The Titans were interested in center Jarrett Patterson but the former Texan signed with another divisional rival in Jacksonville on a one-year, $6.21 million deal despite reportedly having a bigger deal on the table from Tennessee.

The forgoed dinner rule that led to the trade that no one saw coming as Justin Jefferson heads to Nashville
Grant Oliver
March 19, 2027

Tennessee Titans general manager Malcolm Francois Jr. hadn't slept for more than a few hours a time for at least a week. Between the start of NFL free agency, preparing for the NFL draft, finalizing three trades in two weeks that sent away three starters and then coming to terms with a trade to replace one of them and not to mention trying to find a new head coach, the 31-year old was running on fumes.

Francois had planned to call it a night on Tuesday evening after agreeing to terms with cornerback Joshua Williams and tight end Darnell Washington for their first deals of free agency. The Titans, despite boasting the most cap space in the league, weren't big spenders in the first few days of free agency, not showing much interest in the top receivers in the market. Their mentions were on fire as rival Jacksonville signed Zay Flowers and the Miami Dolphins inked speedster Jameson Williams.

Francois was beginning to feel the pressure internally as well, discussing being had with the coaching staff -- the skeleton that remained following Brian Callahan's abrupt departure -- and ownership, wondering what they were going to do with all of that money and all of those draft picks; seven in the top 100 to be exact. Francois had a plan, or at least the concept of one.

It all came together right as Francois was getting ready to have dinner with his family and finally got a call back from Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. He almost didn't pick up due to a rule instituted by his wife years ago when he got his first NFL front office job. No tables at the phone.

She made an exception this time.

----------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------

The first conversation the two had came in Indianapolis at the NFL Draft Combine where deals are spoken about as frequently as steaks are ordered at St. Elmos during Combine but they are consummated as sparingly as the clothes worn by the prospect on the field.

It's a fraternity among NFL front office executives, an even tighter one among NFL general managers and practically a brotherhood among Black general managers, currently eight in the league with Francois and Adofo-Mensah among them. The two had been catching up when Francois first floated the idea of an offer for right tackle Brian O'Neill. O'Neill was 31 and the Titans had just drafted his future replacement in last year's draft in Earnest Greene III and were in desperate need of cap relief.

They couldn't come together on a deal with Adofo-Mensah, eyeing the Titans' deep pool of picks, wanted multiple draft picks but Francois was unwilling to part with them, at least not for O'Neill. A throwaway joke from Francois saying that if Adofo-Mensah wanted those picks, they'd need to start talking about receiver Justin Jefferson set it all into motion. Adofo-Mensah dismissed it. Francois did not.

The two would have multiple conversations heading into free agency or more accurately, Adofo-Mensah would ignore Francois. The first initial offer was a first, a second and third. Adofo-Mensah balked at it. The second was two first -- one this year, another next year -- and two seconds. Adofo-Mensah turned it down, more politely this time. The fourth offer, right as free agency started, was two firsts, two seconds and three third round picks in this year's draft. The response was slower this time. Francois wasn't sure if it was due to the craziness of free agency having just begun or if Adofo-Mensah was seriously considering it.

Jefferson is as generational as a generational talent can be, shattering all sorts of records in his first three seasons which featured a 1,400-yard season, a 1,600-yard season and then an 1,800 yard campaign in 2022. But since 2025, when J.J. McCarthy took over at quarterback, Jefferson posted back-to-back subpar seasons, averaging just 850 yards each year with just five total touchdowns in two years. Jefferson was well compensated, earning over $40 million annually in his new deal, but was growing frustrated with the lack of both individual and team success.

There had been rumors that Jefferson could potentially want out but he had never spoken about it publicly and teams, knowing what the prize tag would likely be, hadn't come calling. No one would have the multiple draft picks it would take to even pull a move of this magnitude or the cap space to be able to take on Jefferson's $43.3 million cap hit.

Except for one.

----------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------

The road to Jefferson in a Titans uniform was far from linear. It began in the 2025 offseason when the Titans fired Ran Carthon and hired Francois to be their next general manager. Francois had started out as an intern with the San Francisco 49ers, becoming an assistant for then 49ers senior executive Martin Mayhew thanks to an unlikely circumstance where Francois -- a Miami Hurricanes fan -- wore a Hurricanes hoodie to work. Mayhew, a Florida State grad, teased him about it, striking up a mentorship that would see Francois follow Mayhew, another one of the few Black GMs in the league, to Washington where he was one of those few Black executives.

When Mayhew retired, Francois was a finalist to be his replacement but the Commanders ultimately went with Adam Peters, who Francois had worked with in San Francisco. When the Titans job came available, both Peters and Mayhew put a strong word in for Francois who got the job and immediately went to work, drafting Cam Ward with the number one overall pick and trading away eleven players since his arrival, amassing a treasure chest of draft picks.

Francois was willing to part with a bunch of them to secure Jefferson, who he still valued as an elite talent despite the two down seasons. First, he needed Adofo-Mensah to take him seriously and once two first round picks were on the table, Adofo-Mensah was listening but Francois knew it wouldn't be enough. A third first round pick? Now, that would require buy-in from the entire building, a building that was still in repair following Callahan's exodus.

As soon as Francois got off the phone with Minnesota that night, he called Amy Adams Strunk, the controlling owner of the franchise and the daughter of late owner Bud Adams. Even before Francois could run it by his trusted circle of football people, including interim head coach Steve Jackson and top offensive assistant Brian Daboll, he knew that none of it mattered if AAS didn't sign off on it. This was the sort of deal that changed franchises; either lifting them up or crippling them.

AAS didn't pick up right away, perhaps observing her own version of the rule of no phone at the dinner table. Francois called again and again. She picked up on the fourth call and the conversation lasted only a few minutes.

----------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------

Francois and Adofo-Mensah would spent the next hour haggling over the final details of the trade. Francois was prepared to send over two first round picks in this year's draft and then an additional in next year's draft with three first round picks. Adofo-Mensah got off the phone and spoke with his circle and came back, wanting two seconds. Francois told him he'd call him back.

The Titans were wrapping up their work on the draft with the NFL Combine in the rearview and Pro Days about to be underway. They had high grades on several players that they were excited about the prospect of drafting four players within the top sixty two and the prospect of having none of them was something that Francois needed to clue in his football people. They discussed it for a few minutes but the consensus was once again reached.

If any of them had the potential to be even half the player that Jefferson was, the draft would be an unanimous success.

And that's how one of the NFL's biggest trade was completed, sending two first round picks, two second round picks and a third round pick in this year's draft along with a first round pick in next year's draft to Minnesota for Jefferson.

Nice to see a former Duck getting love.

That's a damn haul to give up for Jefferson. He better have a career year.
