Drew Hollingshead Departs For Fresno, Familiar Face Returns To Conway
By The Teal Report - January 2028

Image

Conway, SC. - Fresh off their heartbreaking overtime defeat in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Coastal Carolina returned home to more difficult news. Just days after the Chanticleers landed back in Conway, offensive coordinator Drew Hollingshead announced he would be leaving the program after three seasons to become the new head coach at Fresno State.

“I wish Drew nothing but the best,” head coach Kade Vaughn said in a prepared statement. “He was paramount to our offensive success over the last three years and a steadying presence both on the field and in the locker room during a thrilling — and at times turbulent — season.”

Vaughn, who recently signed a new five-year contract to remain at Coastal, wasted little time finding Hollingshead’s replacement. The Chanticleers will welcome back a familiar face in Dave Patenaude, who previously served as Coastal’s offensive coordinator before moving on to Buffalo.

“Dave knows Conway, knows this fan base, and most importantly, he knows winning football,” Vaughn said. “I’m excited to get him on board and throw some new wrinkles into the No. 1 offense in the nation.”

Patenaude spent the last four years leading Buffalo’s offense, where his unit consistently ranked among the top 25 nationally in both points scored and total yardage. His return to Coastal reunites him with a program now firmly in the national spotlight after its first College Football Playoff appearance.

On the other side of the ball, continuity won out. Defensive coordinator Jeremiah Johnson — the two-time Broyles Award winner as the nation’s top assistant coach — interviewed with both Buffalo and Hawaii during the offseason carousel but ultimately chose to remain in Conway. Johnson will enter his fourth season guiding a defense that has grown into one of the most aggressive and opportunistic units in the FBS.

Despite Historic Season, 9 Chants Enter Portal
By The Teal Report - January 2028

Conway, SC. -The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are riding the most successful stretch in program history — three years under Kade Vaughn, a 27-2 record over the last two seasons, and most recently, their first-ever College Football Playoff win over Texas.

But success doesn’t guarantee stability. Just days after returning from Glendale, Coastal was hit with a wave of departures, as nine players entered the transfer portal in what insiders describe as a growing tension around playing time and NIL distribution.

The discontent comes on the heels of the NCAA investigation, which revealed that gambling winnings were funneled into the Coastal Sports Collective. Though Vaughn and the program avoided sanctions, some players still feel left behind.

“I get the big dogs got to eat, but we want some of that pie too,” said one Chanticleer player who entered the portal, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Winning is great and all, but if I’m not playing and I’m not getting some of that cheddar? I’m gone.”

The headliner among the departures is junior running back Jevon Edwards, who emerged late in the season as a steady force when Bill Davis and Michael Allen battled nagging injuries.

“The sentiment I’m hearing — and this isn’t directly from Jevon himself — is that he felt overlooked,” explained Ripp Hamilton on the Chants Up podcast. “He helped keep this machine running when other guys went down, and the sense is he didn’t feel like the coaching staff, or maybe the NIL structure, gave him the credit he deserved. You look at how Bill and Michael came in through the portal, and you start to connect the dots.”

Several backups joined Edwards in the exodus, including quarterback Samaj Jones. The former portal addition spent just one season in Conway backing up Bryce Underwood before announcing he’d move on.

“I’ve got one more year of eligibility,” Jones wrote on X. “When Bryce told us he was staying, I knew I had to leave just to give myself one more shot at doing something great.”

Jones’ post underscores the biggest offseason headline for the Chanticleers: Bryce Underwood isn’t going anywhere. The Heisman winner put speculation to rest with a single Instagram post captioned “Unfinished business — time to run it back,” beneath a picture of Raymond James Stadium, the site of the 2028 National Championship Game.

Even with the portal losses, Coastal Carolina enters the offseason with their Heisman quarterback, a retooled staff, and their eyes squarely set on Tampa.

Man definitely didn’t see that coming. As an Atlanta Falcons fan, I feel your pain on that blown 4th quarter lead

The blocked punt killed us. Sparked their momentum and killed ours. The sack was on me, I tried rolling out to make a play and got dragged down from behind setting us up in a terrible spot.

But it is what it is. We move. Big things coming
