The Road to New Orleans

The playoff field for 2027 is set, and if you’re a Coastal Carolina Chanticleers fan, the draw could hardly be tougher.

Coastal, fresh off its second straight undefeated regular season and Sun Belt title, will travel to Austin to face the 11-2, fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns — a team whose only setbacks this year came against their bitter rival Oklahoma.

“This is probably the worst-case scenario for Coach Vaughn and Coastal,” Kirk Herbstreit said during ESPN’s live bracket reveal. “Texas is an absolute machine. The only thing that’s derailed them this year is Oklahoma. I know Coastal beat Clemson, but even they aren’t quite on Texas’s level. We’re about to find out if Vaughn and Bryce Underwood are brilliant in the context of their league… or truly generational. That question gets answered in Austin.”

The matchup marks a sharp turn from projections just 48 hours earlier, when the Chanticleers were slotted to face Pittsburgh. But Pitt’s ACC Championship win over Florida State, combined with USC’s Pac-12 title — a stunner that saw former Oregon coach Dan Lanning hand his old team its first loss of the year — triggered the biggest shakeup of Championship Weekend.

Complete First Round Matchups

#9 Alabama at #8 Florida State — Winner advances to the Sugar Bowl to face Oklahoma.

#11 USC at #6 Miami — Winner heads to the Cotton Bowl to face Penn State.

#10 Ole Miss at #7 Notre Dame — Winner earns a Rose Bowl date with #2 Ohio State.

#12 Coastal Carolina at #5 Texas — Winner advances to the Fiesta Bowl to meet ACC Champion Pittsburgh.

It’s the second straight year a Sun Belt Champion has cracked the CFP, but after last year’s 55–14 blowout loss by Southern Miss to Miami, the conference is desperate for a more competitive showing. Coastal — led by Heisman winner Bryce Underwood — now carries the league’s hopes into a matchup many see as the ultimate litmus test.

I mean, our opponents combined record is 77-93 so as much as I'd like to feel slighted. I get it.

Bryce Underwood Completes Electrifying Season With Historic Heisman Victory
Image

In a landslide victory that many saw coming months ago, Coastal Carolina’s Bryce Underwood was officially crowned the 2027 Nissan Heisman Memorial Trophy winner. While he narrowly missed breaking Joe Burrow’s all-time point percentage record of 93.8% from 2019, Underwood’s 93.3% share still ranks second in history, miles ahead of Pittsburgh quarterback Eli Holstein, who finished a distant runner-up.

“I dreamed of hoisting this trophy wearing maize and blue three years ago,” Underwood began, reflecting on his high school pledge to Michigan before his stunning transfer to Coastal. “But fate has a way of changing in ways you never expect. From the very first visit I had with Coach Vaughn in Conway, I knew there was something special here — something worth betting my future on. And now? We’ve made history together. And I don’t think our story is over yet.”

Underwood’s 2027 stat line is the stuff of video games: 3,617 passing yards, 57 passing touchdowns, just 10 interceptions, plus 1,292 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. His 81 total touchdowns shattered Bailey Zappe’s FBS single-season record of 65, and he now sits just five shy of Zappe’s single-season passing TD record of 62 — with the College Football Playoff still ahead.

“You want explosive, 60-yard strikes? He’s got it,” said Desmond Howard during ESPN’s ceremony coverage. “You want Houdini scrambles where he turns nothing into a touchdown? He’s got that too. This wasn’t just a Heisman season — this was a masterclass in how to dominate a football field. If he keeps going in the postseason, we might have to rewrite half the record book.”

Howard added, “Five more passing touchdowns to break Zappe’s record? In this offense, with these weapons? That’s not just attainable — that’s probable.”

Pat McAfee, never one to pass on a good line, jumped in: “Probable? C’mon, Dez. He might do it in ONE GAME! If I were a betting man — and I know Coach Vaughn is listening — I’m tripling down on him breaking that record before we even hit the national championship.” McAfee’s jab at Vaughn drew laughs in the studio, a nod to the recently closed NCAA and IRS investigations that dominated headlines earlier this season.

The Heisman capped off a trophy haul for Underwood, who also collected the Maxwell, Walter Camp, and Davey O’Brien Awards. Coastal’s season-end hardware table was crowded — freshman MLB Walt Reyna swept the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Butkus Awards, while cornerback Jo’Ziah Edmond earned national honors of his own. Wideouts Dazmin James and Trishtin Glass both finished as runners-up in their respective categories, solidifying the Chanticleers’ place among the most decorated programs in the nation this year.

One glaring absence from that list? The Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award — which went instead to Tulane’s Jon Sumrall.

“You know, while we’re talking about awards, I gotta bring this up,” Nick Saban said as ESPN’s coverage neared its close. “Coach of the Year goes to Jon Sumrall — good coach, great season — but they lost in the AAC Championship Game. Meanwhile, Kade Vaughn goes undefeated, breaks records, gets his team into the playoff, and he’s watching someone else walk off with that trophy. I’ve been around long enough to know — that’s hard to swallow.”

Pat McAfee didn’t hesitate to pile on. “Yeah, Coach, that’s not just a snub — that’s a straight-up message. You think the NCAA forgot about Vaughn dancing circles around them in that investigation? No way. They couldn’t get him on sanctions, so they’re gonna ding him anywhere they can. You don’t go 13-0 in the Sun Belt, win the league, put a kid on the Heisman stage, and not get Coach of the Year unless there’s some politics in play. And this, my friends, is politics with a capital P.”

Saban nodded, summing it up with the gravitas of someone who’s been on both sides of that equation. “You can say you don’t like his methods or his style, but you can’t take away the results. The man’s figured out how to win, and at the end of the day, that’s what this sport is supposed to be about.”

Alright gentleman, wanted to see where ya'll think Coastal fits best going forward. I've got one way I'm leaning but I wanted to gauge the community. IM A MAN OF THE PEOPLE

I feel like its too early for the ACC and would leave only the SEC as another stepping stone - but regional wise it makes the most sense outside of the American. Only problem with the American is I'm worried it'll be the same problem as the Sun Belt. Coastal (80 OVR) would be the best team already with Tulane (74), UCF (76), and Memphis (74) being the only teams close to our rating and above 70. I think Big 12 makes sense progression wise, but not geographically. And we'd be a middle of the pack team rating wise in the Big 12 - same as the ACC.

Thank you all for any opinions you may or may not offer. We're on to Austin.

Good luck against Texas. If you get past them I can definitely see you guys continuing the run into the semis. As far as conference goes, I’d say ACC. Like you said American will be similar to your current conference, so why not go compete with the big boys. You got your QB and your roster will only get better as we continue, so LETS GET IT. ACC then SEC eventually :yep:

Just catching up with this, great story so far. Texas would be an unbelievable win but with a Heisman winner, it’s possible.

ACC would be a smart move next. A stepping stone to the SEC for sure.

Pittsburgh I think will be less of a challenge than Texas - but if Oklahoma comes out of the Sugar Bowl they're a juggernaut.

Austin, TX. - “Anything is possible!” Kevin Garnett shouted after winning his first NBA title with the Celtics — a rallying cry for every underdog since. Few have embodied that mantra more than the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Undefeated at 13-0, boasting a Heisman winner at quarterback, and riding a 27-1 run over the past two seasons, they still entered the College Football Playoff as nearly three-touchdown underdogs to the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns.

Turns out, the oddsmakers forgot to tell Coastal.

Texas appeared ready to assert its SEC muscle late in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 28-20 after Cliff Honeycutt’s second touchdown pass to Micah Hudson with 9:37 left. Momentum was swinging, and ESPN’s Jesse Palmer said what much of the audience was thinking:

“It’s looking like the clock is about to strike midnight. Coastal Carolina fought tooth and nail to get here, but now they’ve been outscored 10-0 in the second half. Texas is one big play from taking all the momentum.”

Bryce Underwood wasn’t listening — or maybe he was and just didn’t care. After a rough start to the half, including a turnover on downs and an interception that fueled Texas’s rally, the Heisman winner locked in. Four completions for 37 yards set up a one-yard leap over guard Johnny Williams IV to push the lead back to 35-20.

All the pressure shifted to Honeycutt. He cracked.

Jo’Ziah Edmond picked off Honeycutt on third-and-six, setting up a 16-yard Underwood touchdown run — his third of the night. On Texas’s next possession, Edmond struck again, snatching a third interception to put the game to bed.

Underwood’s final line was yet another chapter in what’s shaping up as one of the greatest single seasons in NCAA history: over 300 total yards, five touchdowns, and the swagger of a quarterback who knows exactly what’s at stake.

When asked postgame if he was counting stats, Underwood shook his head.

“We’re out here for one thing — recognition. The only way to really put respect on my name, on this program’s name, and on Coach Vaughn’s name is with some gold hardware. Everything else is just noise.”

The nation’s No. 1 offense delivered again, topping 400 yards and 42 points, while the defense held Texas to 20 points and under 50% passing. Now, the focus shifts to Scottsdale and the Fiesta Bowl, where Coastal will face ACC champion Pittsburgh. The Panthers bring their own Heisman finalist in quarterback Eli Holstein — the man who finished a distant second to Underwood.

For Coastal Carolina, the magic rolls on. For the rest of the country, the question is simple: can anyone stop them?

Image
Micah Hudson skying for the leaping touchdown grab to bail out the Longhorns offense and halt what appeared to be a Coastal avalanche to start the 1st round contest.

Image
Jo'Ziah Edmond slammed the door on any late 4th Q magic with back to back interception to send the Longhorns home.

Image
Micah Hudson slipped behind the defenders for his 2nd TD of the day to draw within 8 points, but it was the closest Texas would come to ending the Chanticleers party.
