Norfolk, VA. - There’s a blowout, there’s brutal, and then there’s downright ugly. What Coastal Carolina did in Norfolk, Virginia falls firmly into the third category, as the Chanticleers wrapped up their three-game road trip by outscoring opponents 209–13 — capped by a 70–3 demolition of Old Dominion.

The game didn’t start as smoothly as the final score suggests. A torrential downpour slowed Coastal’s opening drive, forcing a pair of fourth-down conversions to keep the chains moving. That prompted a tongue-in-cheek jab from the Old Dominion radio booth, dubbing Kade Vaughn “the most successful gambler in the Sun Belt” after the second conversion.

By the second quarter, no one in Norfolk was laughing. Fueled by five straight Monarch turnovers — two fumbles and three interceptions — Coastal erupted for 42 second-quarter points, turning a sloppy start into a 56–3 halftime embarrassment.

Unlike earlier blowouts where Vaughn kept his starters in deep into the third quarter, this one was over before the bands hit the field. Old Dominion opened the second half with backups, only for freshman MLB Walt Reyna to immediately jump a route and return Cortez Mornokola’s first pass 14 yards for a pick-six — the second defensive score of the night.

Bill Davis, still limited by an ankle issue, ceded most of the backfield work to Michael Allen and Jevon Edwards, each providing steady production. But the defense stole the spotlight, forcing eight turnovers and holding Old Dominion to just 161 total yards.

Still, Bryce Underwood kept padding his Heisman résumé, throwing four touchdowns and adding two more on the ground. His performance pushed him to a Sun Belt-record 41 passing touchdowns on the season — with three games still to play.

The Chanticleers (9–0) now head back to Conway for a season-ending three-game homestand. But with an NCAA investigation still looming, many are wondering if the other shoe is about to come crashing down.

Sources: Rival Coaches Behind NIL Allegations as Vaughn’s Gambling Past Deepens
By The Teal Wave - November 2027

Image

The NCAA’s ongoing investigation into Coastal Carolina head coach Kade Vaughn and the Chanticleers’ suddenly surging NIL program has taken another turn — this time with sources revealing both the origins of the allegations and new details about Vaughn’s off-field ventures in Atlantic City.

According to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation, Appalachian State head coach Dowell Loggains was the first to alert investigators, relaying comments allegedly overheard from Coastal quarterback Bryce Underwood following the Chanticleers’ 55–6 win in Boone earlier this season. Loggains claimed Underwood was heard telling a teammate: “We’re here to win championships, but that NIL bag definitely don’t hurt.”

Loggains, who has been a vocal critic of Vaughn since his hiring, has reportedly clashed with him both in Sun Belt recruiting circles and during tense postgame exchanges. One Sun Belt staffer described the relationship as “frosty at best, hostile at worst.”

The probe reportedly widened when Florida head coach Chris Klieman — formerly of Kansas State — relayed a similar comment allegedly made by defensive lineman LJ McCray after Coastal’s blowout win in Gainesville. Sources within the SEC say Klieman was already “irked” after Vaughn publicly revealed that he had been the Gators’ first choice for head coach — and that he declined to even interview despite being assured an offer “more than triple” his current Coastal salary.

“Let’s just say there’s not a lot of love lost there,” the same Sun Belt staffer told ESPN.

The Gambling Connection

While the early investigation focused solely on NIL activity, new financial details are beginning to emerge.

Multiple sources say Vaughn’s involvement in high-stakes gambling — first in small amounts during his time as North Carolina’s co-offensive coordinator — eventually led to significant winnings in the winter of 2024. After being let go from UNC following Mack Brown’s retirement, Vaughn reportedly entered a mid-tier poker tournament in Atlantic City, finishing with a sizable mid-bracket payout worth just over $420,000.

It wasn’t a life-changing jackpot, but it was more than enough to fuel further gambling — and more importantly, it opened the door to a different crowd. Vaughn reportedly became a familiar face at Borgata Hotel Casino’s high-stakes tables, rubbing elbows with big names like Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan, and Jason Koon, while also playing extended blackjack runs and betting on non-football sporting events.

According to sources, Vaughn began directing a large portion of his winnings — and in some cases, funds from other gamblers impressed by his story — directly into Coastal Carolina’s NIL collective - the Coastal Sports Collective.

Sources say the contributions were made directly to the fund, not to individual players, allowing Vaughn to rationalize the moves as both legal and strategic.

“He’s always said his HC salary is more than enough to live comfortably,” one former colleague told ESPN. “The way he sees it, he’s not just donating — he’s investing in his own success. Make Coastal a better destination for top recruits, win quicker, and everyone eats.”

The contributions are believed to be in the mid-seven figures since taking over in 2025, with the fund itself ballooning from just $415,000 in total athlete compensation in 2024 to over $4.1 million projected for 2027, rivaling that of some lower-tier Power Four programs and outpacing most Group of Six schools.

His gambling has reportedly not slowed since his hiring — if anything, it has increased.

“His charisma is contagious,” one source close to the NIL program told ESPN. “He’s getting more than people that owe him money contributing. They love the story of him literally betting on himself, and some people just want to say they were part of something like that.”

Recruiting Surge — and Fallout

The allegations haven’t slowed Vaughn’s momentum on the recruiting trail — at least not everywhere.

Since the original ESPN investigation dropped, the Chanticleers have landed three more major commitments:
#67 DE Eric Wheat
#74 DT Lionel Ruggins
#383 QB Andre Koloamatangi

According to multiple recruiting insiders, the investigation has actually made Vaughn more appealing to some players.

“You’ve got a coach literally putting his money where his mouth is,” one newly committed recruit said. “He’s hustling during the week to get these guys ready, then hustling on his own downtime to improve the money his own cats can make? Sign me up.”

But not all prospects have embraced the controversy. A trio of South Carolina recruits — #190 DT Joel Wanogho, #330 DT Jose Priester, and #388 DE Andre Mond — have all cited the investigation as a deciding factor in steering away from Conway.

“It’s a polarizing pitch,” one Sun Belt assistant coach said. “Some see it as real and raw, others see it as a potential mess down the road.”

Regardless of the optics, the recent wave of 4-star additions has vaulted the Chanticleers to No. 15 nationally, boasting seven 4-star signees in the fold.

For now, the NCAA’s inquiry remains ongoing. But as one Sun Belt assistant put it:
“Whether you love him or hate him, you can’t deny one thing — Vaughn knows how to stack chips, on the field and off.”

My mans never bet on a football game and funneled all proceeds through the established Coastal Sports Collective. Quite frankly, this is a witch hunt your honor.

It really is - only one team is rated above a 70 currently. Arkansas State is a 77 but somehow are 4-5
