Clemson, SC. - It’s official: Coastal Carolina just crashed the gates of college football royalty.

Behind a gritty, gutsy effort from injured quarterback Bryce Underwood, the Chanticleers walked into Death Valley and walked out with a program-defining 35–28 win over Clemson—a victory that silenced the doubters and confirmed Kade Vaughn’s bold proclamation from last season.

“You have to hand it to them,” admitted a somber Dabo Swinney postgame. “They staked their claim and came into our backyard—and backed it up. They’re the real deal.”

Coastal came out swinging, scoring touchdowns on their first two drives and stunning the Clemson crowd into silence. But concern quickly overtook the celebration when a crushing sack by Jared Smith left Underwood writhing on the turf, clutching his throwing shoulder.

Despite briefly exiting the game, the former No. 1 recruit returned with urgency—and edge.

“Ain’t no way I was leaving this game,” said Underwood, an ice pack strapped to his shoulder after the game. “We came here to win. Period.”

With Underwood clearly limited, Vaughn adjusted the game plan into a more ball-control style—short passes, power runs, and time-consuming drives. Clemson, meanwhile, chipped away with a pair of field goals before finally breaking through on a beautiful 81-yard wheel route from Christopher Vizzina to Charles Waddy, cutting Coastal’s lead to one.

But just before halftime, Underwood reminded the Tigers what they were dealing with. Facing 2nd and goal, he powered in from two yards out—bum shoulder and all—to give Coastal a seven-point cushion heading into the break.

Clemson stormed out of the locker room and tied the game on their opening possession of the second half, with Vizzina finding Tyler Brown for a four-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion.

The rest of the quarter came up empty on both sides—until Coach Vaughn made his signature call.

Facing 4th and goal from the 1-yard line after a 15-play, 80-yard drive that started in the 3rd and bleed into the 4th, Vaughn never even looked at the sideline. The offense stayed on the field. Underwood stayed under center.

“No hesitation,” Vaughn said. “We didn’t come to Death Valley to kick field goals.”

Underwood took the snap, surged behind Sam Pendleton, and dove into the end zone—reclaiming the lead and reigniting the teal-heavy corner of the stadium.

Clemson didn’t flinch. On the very next play, Jeff Overton broke through multiple arm tackles and sprinted 79 yards to tie the game at 28.

But the moment belonged to Underwood.

“This ain’t nothing, boys,” he told his huddle. “Trust your teammates, trust the play calling, and let’s get this W.”

Six plays later, Dazmin James delivered the dagger—catching a crossing route, planting his foot, and sprinting past defenders for a 10-yard go-ahead score.

Still, the question lingered: Did Coastal leave too much time?

Both teams would stall on their ensuing drives - giving Clemson one more chance with under 2 minutes left, no time outs, and the ball on their own 20.

Clemson quickly flipped the field on a 59-yard strike to Tyquan Pena, but the Tigers stalled at the Chanticleer 21-yard line. On 4th and 8, with everything on the line, LJ McCray blew past the guard and buried Vizzina for the game-sealing sack.

Despite battling through shoulder pain, Underwood accounted for five total touchdowns and authored the kind of signature win that Heisman campaigns are built on.

But it was his leadership—more than his stat line—that carried Coastal through the fire.

And for Vaughn? It was another moment to pour gasoline on his growing legend.

“I said we were the Kings of the Carolinas. I said Clemson was next.”

Then, with a sly grin and teal-tinted aviators back on his face, Vaughn stood from the podium.

“When y’all gonna stop doubting me?"

Mic. Drop.

Conway, SC. - The South Carolina Gamecocks landed the first punch—a four-play, 75-yard opening drive capped by a 58-yard bomb to Clayton House that silenced Brooks Stadium.

It was the last time they’d have the crowd quiet all night.

Bryce Underwood answered immediately, hitting Aziah Johnson for a quick score on Coastal’s first possession, sparking a 28-point avalanche that buried the Gamecocks before halftime. South Carolina managed only a short field goal off one of Underwood’s two interceptions—a number already creeping to four on the year—but the junior QB would get the final word.

With the Gamecocks in a deep prevent late in the half, Underwood worked the short game patiently before breaking loose on a big run and hustling the offense to the line. In the chaos, Dazmin James slipped uncovered through the seam, hauling in a 24-yard strike to make it 35–10 at the break.

Two plays into the second half, James brought the house down again—this time skying for a highlight-reel “Superman” grab in the end zone for his second touchdown in as many drives.

South Carolina’s reserves tacked on a pair of late scores, but there was no doubt who still ruled the Palmetto State: The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.

Underwood finished with 317 passing yards, 149 rushing yards, and 7 total touchdowns, bringing his season tally to 17 scores in just three games.

“If he isn’t in the Heisman conversation next week, I’m making some phone calls,” Vaughn said postgame.

He won’t have to—Underwood debuted at No. 3 in the latest Heisman poll, while Coastal cracked the AP Top 25 at No. 24.

Next week, the Chants open Sun Belt play in Boone, North Carolina, where Vaughn returns to his old stomping grounds to face 2–1 Appalachian State.

While Underwood has been electric, the coaching staff would love for him to cut down on the silly mistakes that have lead to 4 interceptions in just three games.
