Conway, SC. - After last week’s emotional win over in-state rival South Carolina, Coastal Carolina head coach Kade Vaughn urged his team to stay grounded. And while the Chanticleers handled business in a 31–9 win over East Carolina, the second half was anything but clean.

Coastal dominated early, building a 31–0 halftime lead behind another suffocating defensive effort — holding the Pirates to just 96 first-half yards and 178 total on the day — and an offense that was steady, if still inconsistent.

“I came into this season expecting more from myself,” admitted quarterback Roquan Barber, who endured his worst performance as a starter. Barber finished just 12-of-24 for 134 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions — bringing his season total to five after throwing only nine all of last year.

The Chanticleers racked up 144 rushing yards in the first half and added 81 more after the break, but East Carolina’s defense stiffened, determined to make Coastal earn anything else. They didn’t.

Barber threw three second-half interceptions, including one that led directly to the Pirates’ only touchdown. Another turnover induced drive was bailed out with a 4th down stop, only to be squandered by a safety after a sack pushed Coastal Carolina backward on downs. In total, Barber managed just 50 yards after halftime on 6-of-10 passing with all three picks coming in the final two quarters.

While Coastal’s offense continues to search for rhythm in Vaughn’s system, the defense remained dialed in. The Chants added three more sacks, forced a turnover, and kept the Pirates bottled up throughout.

Still, if Coastal hopes to keep momentum rolling, they’ll need Barber to find his footing — and fast. A trip to Chapel Hill to face Vaughn’s former team, the 1–1 North Carolina Tar Heels, looms next before Sun Belt conference play begins.

Chapel Hill, NC. - After statement wins over South Carolina and East Carolina — both dealing with quarterback injuries — Coastal Carolina headed to Chapel Hill with a point to prove. Not only was this their shot to complete the unofficial “Coastal Crown” with wins over North, South, and East Carolina (Clemson being the lone missing piece), but it was also a chance to silence critics who said they only thrived when opponents were shorthanded.

North Carolina had no such excuse. Dual-threat quarterback Gio Lopez was healthy and active. The Chanticleers just flat-out beat them.

In what’s becoming a signature of the Kade Vaughn era, Coastal took care of business — and then some.

The Chants opened with an eight-play drive capped by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Roquan Barber to freshman Trishtin Glass on a crossing route. It was the kind of sharp, explosive start Coastal lacked last week — and a perfect bounce-back performance for the junior quarterback, who finished the day 27-of-32 for 217 yards and three touchdowns, adding 82 yards and a rushing score on the ground.

“This is why he’s QB1,” said Vaughn after the game. “He was the first to own last week — and then he came out and backed it up. That’s leadership.”

Coastal appeared poised to take a 21–0 lead into halftime after true freshman safety Dalton Dexter snagged his first career interception — proudly wielding the turnover sword on the sideline — but Barber’s lone miscue of the afternoon ended the threat. That opened the door for North Carolina’s best drive of the game, a flawless 7-for-7, 70-yard two-minute drill by Lopez to cut the lead to 14–7 at the break.

But whatever momentum the Tar Heels had was quickly extinguished.

After a three-and-out to open the second half, North Carolina watched Barber march the Chanticleers back downfield, capping the drive with a three-yard touchdown strike to former Tar Heel Aziah Johnson — who saluted the home crowd after the score. One play later, Lopez floated a pass that Ayden Jackson picked off clean, and though Coastal came up empty on the ensuing red zone trip, their defense once again shut the door.

North Carolina’s next drive stalled at midfield after a failed fourth down. This time, Coastal made them pay. A quick scoring drive extended the lead to 28–7. Facing fourth-and-20 from his own 7-yard line, Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick — refusing to punt — dialed up a desperation deep shot, but converted safety Trevor Holton broke it up with ease. One play later, Bill Davis punched it in for the exclamation point.

North Carolina tacked on a meaningless late touchdown to make the final score 35–14, but the result was never in doubt.

The win capped a dominant non-conference run for Coastal Carolina, who not only dispatched hated rival Liberty but staked a claim as kings of the Carolinas.

“If there was a West Carolina, we’d run them outta the state too,” Vaughn smirked postgame. When asked about the one remaining Carolina heavyweight — Clemson — Vaughn didn’t duck the challenge.

“They’re the final boss for sure. Maybe we’ll see ’em in a bowl game. Maybe we’ll schedule it next year. But one way or another — they better watch out. We’re out to prove this is our territory now. And as far as we’re concerned?

“We’re the kings of the Carolinas.”

Coastal Carolina opens Sun Belt play next week with a road trip to Marshall, where new head coach Matt Rhule has already doubled last year’s win total.

Gio Lopez was efficient, but consistent pressure by the Chants and lack of a running game left the Tar Heels scrambling for answers.

Nick James continues to be the man in the middle - anchoring the renaissance of the "Black Swarm" nickname for the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers defense in 2026.
