COUGARS BOUNCE BACK BIG IN WEEK 2

Coming off a disappointing loss to Stanford in Week 1, the Washington State Cougars showed that they indeed do know how to play some Defense in Week 2 against the Wildcats. holding Arizona scoreless until the final minutes of the 4th Quarter.

WSU would jump out to a early (21-0) lead in the 1st Quarter as Trey Owens shows off his big arm with a trio of touchdown pass's including a 46 yd bomb to Lester Creer and K-State transfer Clint Powell continues to make big plays out of the backfield catching a 13 yd pass and taking it 15 more yards for the score. Owens then found Carter Pabst wide open on a 19 yd streak route.

WSU would slow things down in the 2nd Quarter but still managed to extend their lead as Brevin Doll breaks free for a 15 yd touchdown run and then late in the quarter FB Cliff Provo would cap off a 13 play drive with a 2 yd plunge to give the Cougars the (35-0) lead at the half.

The Cougars opened up the 2nd half with the ball and Owens wasted little time using just 4 plays including another 12 yd strike to Powell out of the backfield extending the lead to (42-0) and ending his day in the process.

With Owens out of the game, Cougar fan's got their first look at Colorado transfer Calvin Loyd. Loyd would complete his first 2 pass's but the drive would stall as WSU settles for a 47yd FG by Lounsbury to extend the lead to (45-0).

Still leading (45-0) early in the 4th, Loyd shows off his ability to make big plays with his feet as breaks free for the Cougars longest run of the game and season going 44 yds to the house to extend the lead to (52-0) still with over 6 minutes to play in the 4th.

Arizona would finally get on the scoreboard as backup QB Mario Melendez (74) takes over for the struggling Sawyer Anderson (84). Anderson would finish the game just 11/29 (37%) for 122 yds with 1 INT. Melendez would lead a 9 play drive capping it off with a 3 yd touchdown pass to FR WR Jamerson Leverett (77) breaking the shutout. (52-7) with 3:57 to play. Melendez finished the game 8/13 (61%) for 90 yds with the touchdown.

With the big lead, Coach Moore would go to the sidelines again this time calling JP's # (Johnathan Provo).. Well JP didn't lead a scoring drive he did look good completing 8/14 (57%) for 62 yds as he close out the game..

FINAL SCORE WASHINGTON STATE-52 ARIZONA-7

Yeah I honestly can't remember the last time the CPU ran a kickoff or punt back against me. I know it happened at least once last year but I think this is a first this year.. My poor punter tried his best to run him down But when you throw 3 INT's you can't expect to win and that's what I found out again against the Huskies.

TURNOVERS DOOM COUGARS AS HUSKIES STAY PERFECT!!
HC Dan Lanning made waves across the college football landscape when he left Oregon for Oklahoma only to be fired 2 years later. Now Lanning is back on the Westcoast leading Washington to a 4-0 start and a Apple Cup win in his first season at the helm in Seattle.

Turnovers/INT's plagued QB Trey Owens who threw 3 against Stanford in the Cougars loss in Week 1.. Owens would throw 2 INT's in the 1st half leading to Washington taking a (31-21) lead but with less then a minute to play Owens would hit Carter Pabst on a 22 yd pass to setup a FG as time expires as WSU cuts the lead to (31-24) at the half.

Washington opened up the 2nd half with the ball and quickly scored making it (38-24) but WSU would answer back as Brian Doll breaks free for a 18 yd touchdown run to cut the lead to (38-31). WSU would later have a chance to tie the game but Owens 3rd INT would not only kill the drive but put the Cougars in a hole they just couldn't recover from as CB Tajean Stallworth (80) takes it 30 yds for the "Pick 6" making it (45-31) going into the 4th.

Owens still in the game would connect with Creer for for his 2nd touchdown catch of the night to cut the lead to (45-38) but Washington answers back with a 12 play 89 yd drive ending with a 4 yd touchdown run by FR RB Sione Cross (85) as Washington extends their lead to (52-38) with 4:57 to play.

Owens and Creer were not done though as the duo hooks up for TD #3 with 1:47 to play in the game to cut the lead to (52-45).. Armed with just 1 timeout, Coach Moore elected to try for the onside kick catching the Huskies off-guard the Cougars recovered but Owens 4th INT of the game would seal the victory for the Huskies as they take back the Apple Cup..

WSU now (1-2) on the season will head back on the road to take on #25 (3-0) Ohio State.. The Buckeyes (97/96/99) opened their season with a (34-31) win over Buffalo then did the same against Pitt (34-31) before beating #4 Alabama (32-31) before their Week 3 "Bye".

It was painful.. A couple were just good plays by the defense and some were just stupid plays by me.. I learned by lesson and played much smarter against Ohio State.

COUG'S COME OUT BIG ON THE ROAD IN WEEK 4
Since Coach Kirby Moore arrived in Pullman the Cougars have had some big wins (Beat Washington last year to win the Apple Cup, Beating Boise State, beating Stanford to win the Pac-12 title and beating Rice to win the Holiday Bowl) but this week's road win over #25 Ohio State could push Boise State for #3 on the Top-5 most impressive wins.

QB Trey Owens entered the game on thin ice after throwing 4 INT's in the loss to Washington las week, but Owens played a almost perfect 1st Half. Owens led WSU to a early (14-0) lead in the 1st Quarter with touchdown strikes to Clint Powell (17 yds) and Carter Pabst (19 yds).. Ohio State would battle back in the 2nd Quarter though to tie the game (14-14) with 3 minutes to play but WSU answers back 4 yd touchdown run by FB Cliff Provo as the Cougars retake the lead (21-14) with under a minute to play.. Ohio state would run their sub 2 minute offense to perfection though setting up a 32 yd FG as time expires to make it (21-17) at the half.

WSU opened up the 2nd half with the ball and Owens went to work with touchdown pass's to Lester Creer (22 yds) and Junior Finenganofo (12 yds) as WSU extends their lead to (35-17) after OSU QB Samaj Jones (84) throws a INT JR CB Trey Poteat, WSU would score a 3rd unanswered touchdown as Brevin Doll rumbles in from 9 yds out to extend the Cougars lead to (42-17).

Ohio State would try and rally in the 4th scoring twice as Jones throws a 41 yd touchdown to RB Anthony Rodgers (85) on a fly route and then hits Jerome Bettis Jr (94 Ovr) for a 26 yd strike. Bettis Jr would end the game with 6 rec for 114 yds and the score.

Trailing (41-31) Ohio State would try for the onside kick but the Cougars were ready... It appeared like WSU was going to put the game away with under a minute to play facing a 1st and goal but the Buckeye Defense comes up big as WSU turns the ball over on downs but one play later Nolan Conkin hits Rodgers in the backfield for the safety, as WSU extends the lead to (44-31).. Still armed with all 3 of their timeouts the Buckeye Defense comes up with another big stop forcing a Cougar punt with 47 seconds to play but Jones first pass attempt is picked off by FS Kayo Patu who goes 34 yds for the "Pick 6" INT...
FINAL SCORE WASHINGTON STATE-51 OHIO STATE-31

KEY COUGARS
QB-T Owens-51/65 (78%) 502 yds 4 TD
RB B. Doll-20 carries 55 yds 1 TD
RB C. Powell-9 rec 43 yds, 13 rec 123 yds 1 TD
FB C. Provo-9 rec 34 yds 1 TD

WR C. Izein-8 rec 109 yds
WR L. Creer-7 rec 93 yds 1 TD

UP NEXT
WSU now back to .500 (2-2) will look to try and make it 2 wins in a row as they head South to take on the (1-3) Texas State Bobcats.. Texas State opened up their year losing 3 straight including loss's to K-State, Cal and UTSA but is coming off a Week 4 win over Texas Southern (FCS) 44-34..

COUGARS MAKE IT 2 IN A ROW IN WEEK 5

Despite a slow start scoring just 3 points in the 1st Quarter, WSU managed to put up 20 points in the 2nd Quarter to take a (23-7) lead at the half as Trey Owens throws touchdowns to Carter Pabst (29 yds) and Cory Izien (31 yds) WSU would open up the 3rd Quarter with a 12 play drive that ended with a 5 yd touchdown by FB Cliff Provo who scores his 3rd touchdown of the season to extend the lead to (30-7).. Texas State would manage to add 6 points to the scoreboard with a pair of FG's to make it (30-13) after Trey Owens throws a pair of 3rd Quarter INT's. Texas State would open up the 4th Quarter scoring with JR QB Gavin Parkhurst (79) finding SO WR Tashuan Dragos (82) on a 25 yd scoring strike to cut the lead to (30-20) just a minute into the 4th, but Washington State would own the final 9 minutes of the game matching their 20 point output in the 2nd Quarter as RB Brevin Doll breaks free for the longest run of the season going 52 yds for a score to given him a season high 161 yds on the ground and Owens making up for his 2 earlier INT's finds Lester Creer for his 7th touchdown of the season on a 31 yd strike.. With the touchdown Creer just 5 games into his Junior season has officially taken over as the Cougars All-time career leader in receiving touchdowns with 39.

WEEK 5 TEAM REPORT

QB TREY OWENS

The former Texas/USC transfer has been lights out since arriving in Pullman excelling in the Cougars passing attack as he leads the country in yards (2377) and touchdowns (22). If it wasn't for his 9 INT, he probably would be running away with the majority of the Heisman votes.

Moore
"I believe that Trey has the ability to rewrite record books this year"
RB ROOM

With JR Antonio Abbott redshirting,, FB Cliff Provo has taken over the short yardage back roll scoring 3 times on 17 carries (65 yds) allowing former Iowa/Iowa State transfer Brevin Doll to be the primary ball carrier. Doll has responded with 518 yds and 5 TD on 110 carries (4.7 avg).

Doll has gotten some help from K-State transfer Clint Powell (34 carries 165 yds 4.9 avg 1 TD) but the Redshirt Sophomore's biggest contribution has been in the passing game.

Like Doll last year (73 rec 724 yds 5 TD), Powell has excelled as a WR this season logging 40 rec for 482 yds and 4 TD through the first 5 games of this season. Powell's 40 rec is good for #3 on the team and trails Lester Creer by 3 receptions.

Moore "
When we signed C.P we thought we had landed someone who could really help our offense but even I will tell you I didn't realize how much and how soon. :
THE TRIPLE THREAT

Michigan Basketball had the Fab 5, Notre Dame had the 4 Horseman, but WSU has the Triple Threat.

JR Lester Creer 43 rec 567 yds 8 TD is on pace for another record setting season. Creer already owns the single season receptions, yards and touchdown records as well career touchdown records and if he continues on the pace he is on will own the career receptions and yards record as well.

JR Carter Pabst who had a breakout year last year with 76 rec for 833 yds and 9 TD is having a even bigger year this year leading the team in Receptions with 50 for 561 yds and 5 TD and is on pace to break 1000 yds and double digit scores.

Missouri State transfer JR Cory Izien has broke out with a huge year so far logging 38 rec for 512 yds and 3 TD leading the team in yards per catch (13.5 avg).

OC Matt Miller "
Going into the season we knew we had a talented WR room but T.O has done a great job of making sure that opposing Defenses can't just double or triple Creer because if they do Carter and Izzy will kill you.. It's pretty crazy to see the type of connections those guy's have with just 1 off-season together."
O-LINE

Despite 3 new starters, the O-line has held up pretty well. K-State transfer RT Keadin Massey has been credited for giving up 4 sacks, in 414 snaps well Clemson transfer LT Brayden Jacobs has logged 485 snaps without giving up a sack, well former Center/Right Guard Terrell Kim has played a team high 517 snaps giving up just 1.

DEFENSE

SO DT Nolan Conklin currently leads the team with 7 TFL and 2.5 Sacks well the rest of the D-Line seems to be struggling this season. Senior DE Malachi Wrice who had 57 Tackles with 15 TFL and a team high 8.5 sacks last season has just 7 Tackles with 1 TFL and no sacks this year in the first 5 games.

So far through the first 5 games, WSU has recorded just 5 INT with FS K. Patau and OLB Tye Rubin recording 2 each

SPECIAL TEAMS

PK Adlai Lounsbury so far has hit 8/8 FG's this season including 52 yarder and 25/25 XPT.

Freshman Punter Juan Chavez 16 times averaging 42.9 yards with a net average of 37.0 and a long of 62.

Returner Max Woods has yet to break a big one yet this season so far logging 9 returns for 185 yds (20.6 avg) Wood also has 8 PR for 89 yds (11.1 avg)

INJURIES

RB/KR/PF Maxwell Woods will miss the next 5 weeks with a Foot Fracture.. With Woods out fellow backup RB and former Iowa State transfer Alex Goings will take over both kick and punt returns.

RG Jaymar Tasi will miss the next 2 weeks with a Broken Hand. The Former New Mexico Transfer has started the 31 games the past 3 seasons for the Cougars.
