Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers may have returned to Brooks Stadium bruised from a humbling loss at South Carolina, but they made it clear on Senior Day: they were hurt, not finished.
Back on The Teal, Coastal sent a message with a dominant 45-3 dismantling of James Madison — closing out a perfect 6-0 home record and building serious momentum ahead of their Sun Belt Championship clash with Southern Mississippi.
The tone was set early. Roquan Barber kickstarted the onslaught with a pair of third-down strikes — a 29-yard dart to Jameson Tucker and a 19-yard connection with Ja’Vin Simpkins — before hitting backup tight end Brooks Johnson on a smooth RPO to take the early lead.
After a quick three-and-out by the Dukes, Barber capped the next drive with a bruising two-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0. And from there, the avalanche hit.
Still stinging from watching LaNorris Sellers escape pressure a week ago, Coastal’s defense was on a mission. On James Madison’s next drive, a first-down sack was followed by a vicious second-down hit on quarterback Alonza Barnett III. The ball popped loose and was recovered by safety Dante Thomas at the one-yard line.
One snap later, Cane Berrong hauled in the first of his three touchdowns on another crisp RPO. The lead ballooned to 21-0, and the rout was on.
The Dukes showed brief life late in the first half, marching into the red zone trailing 35-0. But with no timeouts remaining, Barnett completed a short pass over the middle and scrambled to set the team for one more snap. Time expired before they could, sealing a first-half shutout.
The second half was little more than a formality. James Madison backup QB Matthew Slucka led a late field goal drive, but by then the celebration in Conway was already well underway.
It was the perfect exclamation point on a remarkable debut season for first-year head coach Kade Vaughn — but as he’s said all year, the mission isn’t complete.
“Southern Miss is no pushover,” Vaughn cautioned postgame. “We just learned firsthand in Columbia — you gotta be a wolf to take down a wolf. Southern Miss is prepping for this game like we’re the sheep. It’s time to show them, the Sun Belt, and anyone else watching: we’re wolves.”
The Golden Eagles enter the Sun Belt title game on a tear, fresh off a statement win over Troy and ranked No. 19 in both the AP and Coaches polls. Coastal, currently just outside the Top 25 with 77 votes, has a golden opportunity in Hattiesburg.
A win over the 9–3 Golden Eagles wouldn’t just earn Coastal its first Sun Belt crown since 2020 — it might be enough to punch their ticket to the national rankings.

Coastal Carolina made sure Barrett wasn't slipping away like LaNorris Sellers did a weeks ago - sandwiching the dual threat QB to force a fumble in a dominant 1st quarter.

Cane Berrong is slowly becoming a red zone machine for Coastal as the senior tight end grabbed 3 more touchdowns to balloon his total to 6.

Hattiesburg, MS. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were supposed to be directionless in 2025. Left adrift after Tim Beck’s abrupt firing just months before spring ball, few expected much. Instead, they’re Sun Belt champions.
Coastal capped a landmark regular season with a statement win in Hattiesburg, overpowering Southern Miss 52–34 to secure their first conference title since 2020 and their first double-digit win season in five years.
The Golden Eagles entered on a seven-game win streak, but they hadn’t faced a team like this — a Coastal squad that didn’t flash, didn’t flinch, and didn’t fade. They didn’t rely on turnovers or big-play explosions. They just executed, hit you over and over, and dared you to keep pace.
In true Chanticleer fashion, they opened the game with a 12-play, clock-chewing drive, capped by a Roquan Barber 3-yard keeper to strike first. After a quick Southern Miss three-and-out — a drive that collapsed after reaching 2nd and 1 — Coastal got right back to work. Barber went 5-for-6 for 30 yards and found Jameson Tucker on a 10-yard fade for a 14-0 lead. It was a preview of things to come for the red-hot duo.
Following a pair of punts, Barber led another long march, this time leaning on backup RB Camerun Knox — filling in for the banged-up Jalen John and Ja’Vin Simpkins. Knox delivered with a 23-yard burst and a bruising 9-yard gain. Then came the dagger: a perfectly sold RPO, with Barber freezing the defense before rifling a dart to Cane Berrong for the touchdown and a 21-0 lead.
But Southern Miss didn’t fold.
Braylon Braxton hit Elijah Metcalf on a deep post between the safeties, and Metcalf outran everyone for a 73-yard score. On the ensuing possession, a pair of penalties derailed Coastal’s drive, and Barber was picked on a cross-body throw. Just like that, the Golden Eagles punched in another touchdown to cut the lead to 21-14.
Barber responded like a veteran. He completed four of five passes for 54 yards and added a scramble to set up a field goal, and Haden Tessier delivered from 37 yards to give the Chants a 24-14 lead at the break.
But Coastal Carolina didn’t come out of the locker room to survive the second half — they came out to make a statement.
Senior safety Dre Pinckney set the scene. “Lights cut off soon as we got in. Then ‘Like That’ started blasting. That Kendrick verse hit — and everybody locked in. Whole room went still.”
Then Coach Vaughn stepped into the dark — calm, sunglasses still on — and delivered just enough.
“Earlier this week I said we’d find out who’s wolves and who’s sheep,” he said. “But they got it backwards. A Chanticleer ain’t no sheep — and truth is, we’re meaner than the wolves too. Just like Kendrick said… we’re here to show the whole damn country who’s the best. Now go remind ’em.”
No yelling. No rah-rah. Just facts.
From there, the second half belonged to the Teal and Black.
First play out of the break, Pinckney blew up a screen pass and Luke Murphy pounced on the loose ball — Coastal’s only takeaway of the day. One play later, Barber hit Tucker again. 31–14. Statement made.
Another long drive. Another touchdown. This time Barber finished it himself on the ground. 38–14 — and the rout was on.
Southern Miss managed to score three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but each one was answered by Coastal. The most heated moment came after a 67-yard strike to Chuck Montgomery. Despite still trailing by 18, Southern Miss head coach Charles Huff opted for an onside kick.
It backfired. Coastal recovered, and on the very next drive, Barber delivered his sixth touchdown pass of the day — a Sun Belt Championship Game record. Coastal’s 52 points also marked a new title game high.
As Vaughn made his way onto the field to celebrate with the team, cool and collected, Southern Miss head coach Charles Huff was anything but. Visibly frustrated, Huff shouted across the field.
“That’s how we’re doing it? Up big and still throwing??”
Vaughn didn’t stop. Didn’t flinch. Just tossed a single word back without turning around.
“Boom.”
Then he raised his hands as if to say, run it back anytime.
Southern Miss added a cosmetic score late — but this time, they kicked it deep. No onside, no barking, just quiet retreat.
Asked postgame about the change in approach, Huff shrugged and muttered:
“It was over. What’s the point?”
The point? Coastal had made theirs loud and clear.
The win put a bow on a breakout debut season for Kade Vaughn. While a bowl game still awaits, the Chanticleers’ 2025 campaign is already historic — and not just for the trophy.
Coastal broke multiple Sun Belt Championship Game records, including:
Most points scored (52)

From preseason questions to postseason crowns, Coastal proved one thing:
This team might’ve started the year lost — but they finished it as the kings of the Sun Belt.

Jameson Tucker skying for the first of his Sun Belt CCG record three touchdown catches.

Elijah Metcalf sparking a brief rally in the 2nd quarter to give Coastal an early run for their money.

Barber's only mistake of the day was this off-balance pass that was intercepted to set up the Golden Eagles second touchdown.

Dre Pinckney started off the 2nd half with a bang - dislodging Chapman from the ball as Coastal began to pull away.

Camerun Knox once again was vital in relief of Jalen John's and Ja'Vin Simpkins with another 188 all purpose yards.
