David Bean Dismissed From School Following Third Disciplinary Action
Conway, SC. - Coastal Carolina freshman redshirt linebacker David Bean has been dismissed from the Chanticleers football program, effective immediately, after a series of overnight incidents led to his arrest and multiple misdemeanor charges. Head coach Marcus Freeman announced the decision Friday morning, calling the move “unavoidable” given the severity of the situation and Bean’s disciplinary history.
According to a Conway Police Department incident report, officers received multiple calls late Thursday night regarding a vehicle driving at excessive speeds and swerving through traffic near Highway 544. Witnesses reported a silver 2020 Honda Civic, matching the description of Bean’s car, traveling over 90 miles per hour and “operating in a manner that posed a danger to other motorists.”
Officers located the vehicle minutes later and attempted a traffic stop. The car initially slowed, but then accelerated across lanes and briefly into oncoming traffic. Given the high-risk behavior and the presence of other drivers on the road, officers terminated the pursuit, instead using the obtained license plate number to identify the vehicle’s registered owner.
Prior to the traffic stop attempt, a security camera at a nearby bar captured Bean leaving the establishment and entering his vehicle after spending several hours inside. The timestamp aligned closely with when the Civic was first reported for reckless driving, according to the police report.
Police later made contact with Bean at an off campus apartment reportedly leased by his parents. Officers noted that Bean appeared visibly intoxicated and unsteady. He declined roadside sobriety testing but admitted to having driven the vehicle “earlier,” offering no clarification. After being transported to the Conway Police Department, Bean registered a blood alcohol content of .10.
He was booked on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving, speeding, and evading arrest. Bean is scheduled to appear before a judge Friday afternoon for a bond hearing.
Freeman, now in his first season with the Chanticleers, said Friday that Bean’s dismissal was based not only on the incident itself but on what he called a “pattern of troubling behavior.”
“This is the second time during my tenure that Mr. Bean has found himself on the wrong side of the discipline committee, and his third in less than two full seasons on campus,” Freeman said in a written statement. “His clear and blatant disregard for the law, the well-being of the community, and the rigorous standards we uphold here at Coastal Carolina leaves me no choice but to dismiss him immediately.”
Bean, a former four-star recruit out of Kennesaw, Georgia, arrived in Conway with high expectations but never appeared in a game for the Chanticleers. Last season, then-head coach Kade Vaughn suspended him one game for repeated unexcused absences from mandatory weight-training sessions. Earlier this fall, Freeman issued a three-game suspension after Bean missed required position meetings ahead of Coastal’s Week 3 matchup with Louisville.
