Looks like a chance to repeat the Pitt showing, coming off a bye and against a bad team.

Bill's gone, but it still looks like his 24 year old GF is running the team :kghah:

although to be fair, now she'd be 33. More respectable

Despite Victory, Coastal Loses Multitude Of Recruits To Rival Clemson

Image

Conway, SC. - Kade Vaughn transformed Coastal Carolina from quirky upstart to national powerhouse by mining the transfer portal early, then parlaying that momentum into high school recruiting dominance. By the height of his run, the Chanticleers were stacking Top 10 classes annually and winning national titles with rosters built on both polish and development.

Marcus Freeman’s first year in Conway has Coastal sitting at 5–1 and firmly in the ACC title hunt, but the early recruiting returns have been more uneven. Through seven weeks, the Chanticleers have secured six commitments, yet they’ve also lost six battles, including four head-to-head against Clemson and another to Miami. Around the program, that split record has raised questions about whether prospects view Freeman as a true long-term successor to Vaughn.

The biggest miss so far? Hasheem Orakpo, a former track standout whose 10.4 speed made him one of the most explosive raw athletes in the country.

“Honestly, he’s a five star trapped behind a two year resume,” said one national scout. “He only started playing football as a junior, so he doesn’t have the stats some evaluators want. But if he’d played all four years? Easy Top-10 kid. Coastal is going to hate seeing him across the field in that rivalry.”

Local talk radio has amplified the uncertainty. On Chants Up, longtime analyst Ripp Hamilton said the quiet part out loud.

“Look, this is just chatter,” Hamilton cautioned, “but the concern is that Freeman sees this as a stepping stone, not the job. Vaughn built the program, stayed loyal, and when he left, he went to the NFL so he wouldn’t tear down what he built. Some folks don’t feel that same security with Freeman.”

Even so, Coastal is firmly in the mix for four elite prospects: 5-stars Marquez Henderson, Antoine Borghi, Ezekiel Gillette, and Dontae Hook. Their recruitments remain open, and Coastal’s on field success is keeping the Chanticleers on the front page.

“Production wins,” said another evaluator. “These kids think they can shine anywhere. What they want is a stage and Coastal still has one of the biggest in the ACC.”

Among the current six commitments, the headliner is Oklahoma City defensive tackle Jamar Maginn. At 6'2", 306 pounds, Maginn projects as an immediate-impact anchor up front.

“He’s massive, sure, but it’s the leverage that makes him special,” a regional scout explained. “He plays low, locks out blockers, and has a natural feel for using his length to shed and disrupt. He’s a run-stuffer with real three-down upside if he keeps developing.”

Next is perhaps the most intriguing piece: linebacker Deron Zombo. At 6'2", 236, he fits the exact mold Vaughn once prioritized in the old 3-3-5 defense, but under Freeman, his future may be even more versatile.

“He’s fluid, rangy, and covers ground like a DB,” the scout added. “Honestly? He looks like an Isaiah Simmons-type player. Positionless, athletic, everywhere at once. I wouldn’t be shocked if Coastal moves him to a hybrid safety role.”

The Chanticleers also added a pair of interior maulers in guards Sean Keller and Sidney Ford, two classic road-graders who project as early contributors in Coastal’s run heavy identity.

“These guys both fire off the ball with power,” an offensive line coach said. “Coastal always has backs who can go the distance. These two will be opening the lanes.”

Six commits in, Coastal’s class is structurally solid but still searching for a true headliner. The swing factor will be whether Freeman can land even half of the blue-chip athletes still on the board. If he does, his first full class could begin to mirror the top-10 hauls that became routine under Vaughn.

If not? The perception questions will only get louder as signing day approaches.
