Statesboro, GA. - After back-to-back blowouts, some wondered if the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers still knew how to win the close ones. On Saturday, they offered a resounding answer — grinding out a gutsy 28-24 road win over Georgia Southern behind a late go-ahead touchdown and two critical defensive stands.
Camerun Knox made his presence known early, bursting free for a 27-yard touchdown on the Chanticleers’ opening drive. But after a promising start, momentum briefly swung toward the Eagles when Roquan Barber threw a rare interception that handed Georgia Southern prime field position. It took just one play — a 55-yard scamper by David Mbadinga — for the Eagles to capitalize.
“It was a bad ball on my part, plain and simple,” Barber admitted postgame. “I thought I’d put it far enough out where only Cane [Berrong] or no one could get it. He just made a great play. Hats off.”
The teams traded blows before the break. Jalen John powered in from two yards out, but Eagles WR Josh Dallas answered with a strong drive of his own — three catches, 47 yards, and a touchdown — to send the game into halftime tied at 14.
Georgia Southern looked ready to seize control out of the locker room. QB JC French hit Dalen Cobb in stride on a 65-yard crossing route for the score, as Cobb shook Robby Washington and sidestepped Dre Pinckney for the end zone. But as they’ve done all season, Coastal didn’t blink. A 22-yard connection from Barber to Jameson Tucker sparked a quick response, capped off by Barber’s 8-yard touchdown scramble.
With both offenses trading punches, it felt like whoever scored last might win. Georgia Southern leaned into that strategy with a 12-play drive draining nearly six minutes off the clock. Facing 1st and goal from the 10, they pushed to the 1 before being stuffed and settling for an 18-yard field goal — a decision head coach Clay Helton later questioned.
“Those are the decisions that keep you up at night,” Helton said when asked if he wished he’d gone for the touchdown.
That conservative choice gave Coastal the opportunity they needed. With the game on the line, Barber rallied the offense, telling his teammates simply: “It’s our turn to carry the boats.”
Eleven plays later — and without facing a single third down — Jalen John split two defenders and bullied into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night, putting the Chanticleers up 28-24 with just under five minutes to play.
Then came the defensive stand.
French completed five straight passes to march Georgia Southern into scoring position. A 16-yard burst by Terrance Gibbs was nearly a touchdown, but Dre Pinckney delivered a hit that forced a review — ruling Gibbs down at the half-yard line.
The next sequence was nothing short of heroic:
• 1st and Goal from the 0.5: -2 yard rush.
• 2nd and Goal from the 2: -1 yard rush.
• 3rd and Goal from the 3: Incomplete after Dalen Cobb was leveled trying to haul in the back corner fade.
• 4th and Goal: French rolled right, but with Coastal blanketing his receivers had no where to go before Jordan Mack and Se'Von McDowell collided for the sack.
Barber, efficient if not flashy all night, did just enough on the ensuing drive — converting a third-and-four with another hard run by John to drain the clock and secure Coastal’s sixth straight victory.
And the postgame news made the win even sweeter: Old Dominion’s 24-16 loss to Troy clinched Coastal Carolina’s first Sun Belt Championship Game berth since 2020.
“One more step,” said HC Kade Vaughn. “It’s another step on the path to our ultimate goal for this season.”
Next up? Coastal’s biggest test yet — a trip to Columbia to face a South Carolina team reeling after back-to-back losses and a bye week that dropped them from #1 to #16.
“They’ll be looking to get right,” Vaughn said with a smirk. “We don’t intend to oblige.”

This 1st quarter interception helped Georgia Southern strike back to keep the game knotted early.

Jalen John creating enough space to bully his way into the endzone for the winning touchdown.

Josh Dallas showed out to end the 1st half with three straight receptions - including this leaping touchdown grab to send the game into the half tied.
