The Wait Is Over - Marcus Freeman Announced As Kade Vaughn's Successor

Image

Conway, SC. - Coastal Carolina’s search for its next head coach has ended and this time, the Chanticleers are opting for calm over chaos.

Multiple sources confirm that former Notre Dame and Troy head coach Marcus Freeman has agreed to become the next head coach at Coastal Carolina, replacing Kade Vaughn, who departed for the Pittsburgh Steelers in February.

Freeman, 48, brings a resume steeped in both high-level experience and defensive discipline. After leading Notre Dame to the 2024 National Championship Game in just his fourth season, Freeman guided the Irish to three additional College Football Playoff appearances (2026, 2027, 2029), though he never managed another postseason win. He was dismissed in 2031 following a disappointing 5-7 finish, ending his tenure in South Bend with a 101-22 record.

Rather than retreating, Freeman quietly rebuilt his reputation at Troy, going 20-7 across two seasons; including a 12-2 mark in 2033 that saw the Trojans finish ranked No. 23 nationally. His defenses were once again among the most disciplined and physical in the Group of Five, and his player development chops earned widespread praise from peers and media alike.

According to multiple Coastal sources, Freeman’s measured, professional demeanor played a key role in his hiring. After nine years under the magnetic, and at times polarizing Vaughn, Coastal’s leadership wanted a head coach who could bring steadiness to a program that has lived in the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons on more than one occasion.

“Marcus is the kind of guy who lets his team’s play do the talking,” one Coastal administrator said. “We wanted a coach we didn’t have to worry about every week; no headlines, no soundbites, just results. Freeman’s all business.”

The decision also reflects a commitment to maintaining Coastal’s emerging defensive identity. With defensive coordinator Tony White departing for Colorado, Freeman’s hiring ensures continuity on that side of the ball. A former linebacker at Ohio State and long regarded as one of college football’s sharpest defensive minds, Freeman will likely retain elements of White’s aggressive, attacking style while adding his own disciplined structure.

Still, questions remain on the offensive side. Vaughn and former offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri turned Coastal into one of the nation’s most explosive units, a standard Freeman has reportedly vowed to uphold. Per sources, Freeman and Athletic Director Mike Buddie are targeting an “innovative, aggressive offensive coordinator” with Power Five experience to balance Freeman’s defensive focus.

In the wake of Vaughn’s high-profile exit and the off-field noise that followed, the Freeman hire feels like a statement a reset toward professionalism, stability, and long-term growth.

Freeman Announces Coaching Staff - With One Legendary Addition

Image

Conway, SC. - A new era of Coastal Carolina football is officially underway in Conway. Less than two weeks after being introduced as head coach, Marcus Freeman has finalized his first staff and it’s a blend of familiar faces, proven leaders, and one legendary Chanticleer coming home.

Freeman announced the hires of Tommy Rees as offensive coordinator, Brent Pry as defensive coordinator, and former Coastal All-American Walt Reyna as linebackers coach on Monday. The trio gives Coastal a mix of national experience and local pride as the Chanticleers look to stay among the elite after back to back National Championships.

Rees, who previously worked with Freeman at Notre Dame, reunites with his former head coach after a winding journey that’s taken him through Alabama, the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, and most recently LSU under Brian Kelly. Known for his sharp football IQ and calm approach, Rees is expected to help Coastal maintain its explosive offense while keeping things steady under the spotlight.

“Coach Freeman said from day one he wanted a professional, detailed staff, guys who knew how to win and knew how to handle it,” one Coastal player told The Chronicle. “Coach Rees brings that kind of energy. You can already tell he’s all business.”

On the defensive side, Freeman tapped Brent Pry, the former Virginia Tech head coach and longtime defensive coordinator, to lead a group that’s been one of the country’s best over the past two seasons. Pry spent last year at Minnesota, where his defense finished in the national Top 50 despite the Gophers’ struggles in the Big Ten. His disciplined, no-nonsense style fits perfectly with Freeman’s own defensive background.

“Defense is still the heartbeat here,” said sophomore linebacker Trevor Bausby. “Coach Pry and Coach Freeman? That’s a scary combo. They both demand perfection, and they know exactly how to get it out of you.”

But the biggest headline in Conway might be the return of Walt Reyna, one of the greatest players to ever wear teal. The 28-year-old former Chanticleer star will coach the linebackers; the same position where he made history from 2027–2030, becoming the only player in NCAA history to win the Bednarik, Nagurski, and Butkus Awards in four straight seasons.

After short stints in the NFL, Reyna spent last season coaching at his alma mater, Irmo High School in South Carolina. Now, he’s back where it all started.

“Reyna brings the blue-collar mentality that we want to recapture,” Freeman said. “He was a lunch-pail guy; not the flashiest, not the fastest, but always in the right place, always doing his job. That’s the standard we want here.”

For a program that’s seen plenty of change over the past few months, from Kade Vaughn’s jump to the NFL to multiple staff departures, Freeman’s first hires send a clear message: Coastal isn’t resetting; it’s reloading.

Exodus - Chanticleers Lose 30 Players To Graduation & NFL Draft

Image

Conway, SC. - There’s a strong argument to be made that during their 32-game winning streak and back-to-back national titles, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers fielded some of the greatest talent college football has ever seen.

That notion became reality this week, as Coastal bid farewell to 30 players, 19 graduating seniors and 11 underclassmen declaring early, during the program’s annual Teal Farewell celebration. Of the Chanticleers’ 22 offensive and defensive starters, only redshirt junior linebacker Carl Urbik will return to defend the crown.

“I’m starting to feel a little like Will Smith at the end of Fresh Prince,” Urbik joked, glancing around the stage. “But I’m damn proud to have called all of you my teammates. We accomplished something few programs ever have.”

The night’s biggest surprise came when former head coach Kade Vaughn appeared alongside new head coach Marcus Freeman; a moment that drew the loudest ovation of the evening.

“It wouldn’t feel right sending this group off without a word from the man who helped get them here,” Freeman said before signaling to the bleachers, where Vaughn emerged to a roar.

According to sources, Vaughn’s appearance was jointly arranged by Freeman and former athletic director Chance Miller, now overseeing program events in his new role. Current AD Mike Buddie, seated nearby, appeared caught off guard by the cameo.

Afterward, Freeman made clear he wouldn’t shy away from recognizing Vaughn’s legacy. “I remember facing him more than once and I’m not ashamed to say he got the best of me,” Freeman said. “He took this program from scrappy upstart to powerhouse. You can’t tell Coastal’s story without Kade Vaughn. My job now is to build on that foundation; not bury it.”

As the ceremony closed, Fredrick Meredith delivered one final message for the teal faithful.
“We came, we saw, and we fucking conquered,” he shouted, drawing a roar from teammates and fans alike.

Tomorrow isn’t promised, but this group left no doubt: for three unforgettable seasons, the Chanticleers ruled college football, and but for one playoff loss to Georgia in 2031, might have etched a three-peat into history.

Freeman Restocks the Cupboard With #1 Transfer Class

Image

Conway, SC. - The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers saw 33 scholarships open up after 11 underclassman declared for the NFL Draft, 19 seniors graduated, and three more bid farewell via the transfer portal.

Already armed with the 2nd overall prep recruiting class, Freeman took what Vaughn had built and doubled down, bringing in the #1 rated transfer portal class that helped propel Coastal past the previously #1 ranked class of the Ohio State Buckeyes.

"Coastal has become a brand synonymous with winning and I think regardless of the head coaching change, the players across the country still believe in that," stated one anonymous ACC source.

"I thought Coach Vaughn leaving would give me pause," admitted 3rd overall recruit Warren Abiamiri, "But then you look at who they added? It's not like they went and got some upstart coach to try and learn on the fly. Coach Freeman is legit and I can't wait to get coached by a dude whose literally been in my shoes on the defense before."

A similar sentiment was echoed by many players either in interviews or by social media posts as they declared their intent to join the future of the Chanticleers.

Even DC Brent Pry used his leverage to pull Minnesota DT Miles Clutts, who Pry coached last year with the Golden Gophers, to Conway.

"It was clear what they were targeting, defense and the offensive line," declared one ESPN analyst, "Freeman has been emphatic about wanting to maintain their defensive identity and with only Carl Urbik and Monte Miner returning with experience, filing in that side of the ball was a priority."

Six of their twelve portal signees were on the defensive side of the ball with another pair on the offensive line.

"It remains to be seen how the talent is going to shake out, but no one can say that Coastal didn't reload in a big way."

While Coastal welcomed 33 new Chanticleers, three opted not to stay for the transition from Kade Vaughn to Marcus Freeman. QB Koren Moses signed with Oklahoma State, C Willie Sails signed with Georgia, and T Colt McCalister signed with the Michigan Wolverines.

Talk about a roster overhaul.. Should be fun finding the next stars in the Coastal Legacy and it's always nice to have one return home and start his coaching career..
