Blue Jays add 1B Joey Votto to 40-man roster, to make debut against Yankees
Written by Julia Kreuz

After 17 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds and signing a minor-league deal with his hometown team, first baseman Joey Votto is officially making his return to the major leagues. The Toronto Blue Jays announced this morning that Joey Votto has been recalled from their Triple-A affiliate and added to their 40-man roster.

Votto homered on his first pitch against the Philadelphia Phillies against their ace, Zach Wheeler, before rolling his ankle in his very next at-bat. Votto slowly rehabbed and was eventually activated and has been toiling away in Triple-A baseball this summer before recently making noise and being activated. The Blue Jays' incumbent starter at first base, superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr., has struggled out of the gate and may need some time to get his game back under him. With only one homerun through a few series, fans are concerned with his lack of power.

Last season, he drew into 65 games for the Reds, finishing with a .202 batting average before succumbing to left shoulder surgery. He is one of the best hitters of his generation, hitting 356 home runs over his MLB career while slashing .294/.409/.511 and producing a 64.5 WAR.

The team currently hangs in the middle when it comes to power, ranked 14th in the MLB in hitting and 12th when it comes to defense. They are currently in second place in the AL East behind the Baltimore Orioles, though they continue to bounce between second and third with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are currently gaining steam after slow starts to the season.

Votto is expected to make his debut on April 15th against the New York Yankees, taking Guerrero Jr. out of the lineup.

Glad to have him on board, hopefully he can give me some lefty power. Only ones really going yard has been Jansen and Bichette.

1 game a series is an interesting approach.

You are off to a great start though.

Also looks like Votto was a good addition with the debut HR.

It's how I've always played TS, to tell the truth. Might not be a recipe for a quick season, but its enjoyable and clean (for me, at least).

Votto is fun to play with but so far, I've found him very hit or miss. Glad we can find some offense unlike the real-life Blue Jays.
